I can't verify the quality of this site, but Pasteur Shanghai is the lab that an article above says detected an unknown virus in five patients in 2009. This site claims Pasteur Shanghai has received over 500 negative results as of April 2010.

Personally, I now have no clue what is causing this (other than certainty this is NOT HIV/AIDS related, and a fair amount of certainty this is not solely due to neuroses), and would like to see more testing for toxins, bacteria, parasites, autoimmune disorders, and other such etiologies.

They call it the "HIV negative", saying it could be a mutation of the AIDS virus or a new unknown virus.

The Ministry of Health has received, for the first time, reports on the subject in June 2009, and the Center for Disease Control and Prevention of Diseases in China (CCPMC) opened an investigation a month later, said Deng Haihua.

Between 2009 and 2010, the center has tested 59 patients suffering from this so-called "HIV negative" and found no evidence of infection of a new virus or an unknown virus, "said the spokesman.

Among these patients, 42 reported having had unprotected sex before the onset of symptoms. Some of them reported having had contact with AIDS patients, revealed Zeng Guang, chief epidemiologist of CCPMC.

they are ill and have been infected with an undetected virus. Since
2009, there have been thousands of cases in 6 provinces and
municipalities, according to media reports. Victims have complained of
HIV/AIDS symptoms despite repeatedly testing negative for the virus.

A leading expert at the Institut Pasteur of Shanghai also backed
their claims. It was unlikely "psychological factors" caused the
symptoms, Mo Xiaowei told the Beijing News. Her institute had
conducted blood tests for 5 sufferers in 2009 and detected "the same
unknown virus," Mo said. Mo's Institute, under the Chinese Academy of
Sciences, was "unqualified" to conduct such research, the Ministry of
Health said.

"I don't agree my symptoms were caused by an AIDS phobia," one man
told the Global Times on Thursday [7 Apr 2011]. "I was tested
negative, but I still have the symptoms. I don't know what I have."

Symptoms include swollen lymph nodes and bleeding under the skin. The
sufferers are fine and most of their symptoms were "exaggerated," Zeng
Guang, chief epidemiologist at the Center for Disease Control and
Prevention in Beijing, reiterated in a press conference on Wednesday
[6 Apr 2011]. His center has done 2 epidemiological studies and sent
blood samples to the US for further testing. All were found to be HIV
negative, and their CD4 cell ratio in the blood -- an indicator of the
immune system [function] -- was found to be normal.

HIV phobia most likely caused the HIV suspicions, said Ministry of
Health spokesman Deng Haihua. The sufferers remained unconvinced. "I
didn't start seeking out doctors until after I discovered the physical
symptoms," one sufferer told the Beijing News.

etiologic agent of this undiagnosed illness, and immune system
dysfunction does not appear to be involved in at least some cases of
this illness. It is still unclear whether the illness can be
considered a discrete clinical entity.

The report from the Institut Pasteur of Shanghai that a (so far
uncharacterised) virus has been isolated from patients displaying the
symptoms of this illness cannot be evaluated at this stage. A verdict

BEIJING, April 10 (Xinhua) -- Despite repeated tests showing negative results, a group of people live in fear, suspecting that they have been infected with HIV.

Experts believe they are suffering from a psychological phobia of AIDS, but they say they are patients of "HIV-negative AIDS".

Among them is 30-year-old Xiang Jun, who prefers not to use his real name, from Xiangtan, a city in central China's Hunan Province.

Since kissing a woman at a karaoke house in August 2010, he has noticed some changes in his body.

"My lymph nodes and muscles swell. At night, I sweat feverishly. I feel dizzy sometimes and can sleep for a whole day. When feeling ill, I want to kill myself," he says.

He has visited hospitals for two HIV tests, and both have come back negative for infection.

Still, Xiang has noticed that, after coming into contact with him, some of his relatives and colleagues have developed symptoms similar to his.

He suspects that his disease could be a new, more contagious form of AIDS.

On the Internet, many people have complained of experiencing symptoms similar to that of Xiang Jun. Some have also complained of other maladies, including joint aches, canker sores, and diarrhea, which resemble symptoms of HIV infection.

Some of them have managed to contact Zeng Guang, chief scientist of epidemiology with the Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

From 2009 to 2010, the CDC tested 59 volunteers from the group of "HIV-negative AIDS" patients, and found no evidence that any had been infected with HIV, says Deng Haihua, spokesman for the Ministry of Health.

The results did not suggest that they were infected by any new or unknown viruses, either, Deng says.

Still, some patients doubt these conclusions.

Xiang Jun has a friend Lin Fei, also using a fake name, who suspects that his entire family has exhibited these symptoms.

"My mother, my wife and my daughter all have fatigue and night sweats. Is it simply because of a 'psychological phobia?'" asks the 49-year-old man.

"My daughter is only six and my son is eight. If our symptoms are due to a psychological phobia, they are too young to know what AIDS really is," according to "Mr. Fear" from Shenzhen, a city in Guangdong Province.

EXPERTS ASSEMBLE FOR EPIDEMIOLOGICAL PROBE

A taskforce has been formed to conduct an epidemiological probe in February and March of this year among the target "patients" in Beijing, Shanghai, Jiangsu, Zhejiang, Hunan and Guangdong.

Cai Weiping, a staff member of the No. Eight People's Hospital in Guangzhou and a member of the team leading the probe, has closely followed the emergence of the group since 2004. According to him, most of the people in the group are "middle-aged males who have participated in high-risk sex."

"The symptoms were described according to their subjective experiences without clinical representation. Sometimes they complained of swollen lymph nodes and fevers but doctors could not verify these symptoms," he said.

Cai says three of the men who suspect themselves of being infected with HIV have taken their wives to the hospital, too, but doctors can not locate the symptoms as described by their spouses.

He remembers the extreme case of a man from Guangdong Province, who forged an HIV-positive report and requested a prescription from the doctor.

Living in shadows of suspected HIV infection

"He took the medicine for some time and felt that his symptoms disappeared, but all his clinical indices remained almost unchanged. After being questioned by the doctor, he admitted that the HIV positive report was a fake," Cai says.

HIV can be transmitted through three channels: sex, blood and from mother-to-child during birth.

UNAIDS estimated that 740,000 Chinese of the total population of 1.3 billion were living with HIV by the end of 2009. Among them, 105,000 were estimated to be AIDS cases.

By the end of August 2010, the cumulative total of reported HIV-positive cases was 361,599, including 127,203 AIDS cases and 65,104 recorded deaths from the disease.

MEDIA REPORTS SPREAD FEAR, NOT CURE

There is no official figure showing the numbers of the phobia groups, but experts fear the population is growing, especially since unprotected sex has become the main transmission channel of HIV in China.

"The media hype to some extent led some people to panic and to later develop a psychological phobia to the disease," says Zhang Beichuan, a well-known Chinese AIDS expert.

While the aim of these media reports is to investigate the spread of HIV/AIDS, the disease is described as being so horrible that the reports negatively influence the public, he says.

Cai Weiping notes that the use of Internet increases the amount of those in the "HIV-negative AIDS" group.

"They chat online and enhance each other's psychological suggestions," he says. "It is their anxiety, rather than the disease, that has been contagious."

His view is shared by Zhang Beichuan, who suggests that treatment for the psychological problem could be improved.

Lin Peng, head of the Institute for AIDS Prevention and Treatment under the Guangdong Provincial Center for Disease Control and Prevention, does not rule out the possibility of finding a new virus in the future.

Blood samples were sent to some U.S.-based laboratories in January this year, and as of the end of March, there had been no reports of an unknown virus found in one-third of the tested samples.

"With the development of medical science, it is hard to say whether a new virus would be found or not," Lin said.

"But one thing is for sure: currently, no new infectious disease has been discovered."

He called on the public to be sensible.

"People should also keep themselves clean, always stay away from commercial sex and drugs," he said.

Keeping into mind the unconditional fact that HIV doesn't transmit via breath or other body fluids (except for sperm and blood), if people are worried to catch the virus the best solution is to have an hygienic perspective of sexual relationship and that condoms are a very good defense against sexually transmitted infections.

That said, my suspect is that enviromental pollution has a part or a role in some of these people illnesses, as said earlier. Several chemical compounds employed diffusely in plastic materials production may alter immune response when safety control by authorities has not been performed in order to discover possible toxic chemicals into final products.

IOH, I tend to agree with you. At least one case has tested positive for Hepatitis B, one for Hepatitis C, one is supected of mononucleiosis, and several are suspected of lymphatic TB. Several cases do appear to be the result of "AIDS neurosis" (the non-infectious illness reconginzed in 1998 in post #31), several may be due to chronic fatigue syndrome, and several others might be the result of toxic exposure (chronic lead poisoning comes to mind, especially in light of the mental symptoms). Complicating matters further is the likelihood that a "symptom" in some of the cases is believing that family members are ill who themselves state they are not and whom doctors find are not. In my opinion, the best way to "solve" this outbreak is to consider each case individually, without regard to other cases that may be unrelated. Considering how varied the reported symptoms are, it seems unlikely this outbreak has a single cause.

Also keep in mind there are several groups with a strong political interest in this outbreak, which may be producing biased reporting. As the first ProMED post indicates, the Epoch Times (and NTD) are supported by the Falun Gong dissident group, which would love to blame the Chinese government for a cover-up, whereas some elements in the Chinese government would love to dismiss the outbreak as a result of neurosis to discredit the dissident groups.

This is from the Epoch Times, the known dissident source, and should obviously be taken with a grain of salt. It seems the explicit purpose of this article is to accuse the Chinese government of a cover-up.

Some of the claims in this article seem impossible (even if the illness was caused by an unknown virus, anti-HIV drugs would likely be of little help because the virus is not HIV, and anti-HIV drugs do not "cure" AIDS - if the patients are responding to anti-HIV drugs, it could be an important clue as the placebo effect should be investigated).

Of note also is that whatever the Institut Pasteur found, they found in December 2009, about 16 months ago. If someone was trying to cover up that story, why would Xinhua have been the first one to break that story (and have done it this month)?

Agreed, Sharon. Between China's poor handling and lack of transparency of AIDS (1990s), SARS (2002-3), H5N1 (2003-????), SFTS (2007-9), and H1N1 (2009), China is in a unique position with respect to such rumors. I cannot imagine such a story persisting for years in any other country, even if an unknown agent was involved, and I believe the dissident sources are aware of that vulnerability. It is notable that while the Chinese sources are investigating such things as tuberculosis, hepatitis, and poisonings, the dissident sources are focused on mutant HIV and novel viruses.

There is a post on the first page of this thread that one of the causes of "AIDS Neurosis" is "lack of trust in authorities who lie".

Studies solve mystery of 'HIV-Negative AIDS' 0 CommentsPrint E-mail China Daily, May 7, 2011 Adjust font size: Sixty people who had claimed they were suffering from a mysterious infectious condition dubbed "HIV-Negative AIDS" have been cleared of the disease, but 48 of them tested positive for several types of pathogens.

The research was done by a team of the No 1 Affiliated Hospital of the Guangzhou Medical University and the State Key Laboratory of Respiratory Disease, between March 31 and May 3.

Sixty patients, including 52 males, whose average age was 34.2 and who came from 16 provinces and municipalities, were examined, said Zhong Nanshan, director of the Guangzhou Institute of Respiratory Diseases, who directed the research.

The sufferers had shown symptoms for periods ranging from three months to 10 years.

Among the 48 who tested positive for pathogens, 33 tested positive for epidermolysis bullosa, 12 positive for chlamydia trachomatis (CT), nine for ureaplasma urealyticum (UU), seven for neisseria gonorrhoeae (NG), eight for cytomegalovirus and one for herpes simplex virus.

Sixteen tested positive for more than one of those pathogens, which are mostly related to sexually transmitted diseases.

In the 24 examined for knee diseases, 10 showed abnormalities in their knees, and in the 38 examined for eye diseases, 20 were diagnosed with conventional eye diseases. Twelve underwent psychological tests and seven were found abnormal.

Since 2009, media reports have stated that sufferers had displayed symptoms very similar to AIDS, such as swollen lymph nodes, subcutaneous bleeding, joint pain, fatigue, night sweats and emaciation.

The Ministry of Health stated in April that there was no evidence that those people were infected by the AIDS virus.

Wu Zunyou, an AIDS expert with the Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention, said no new viruses had been found among the alleged sufferers and they were most likely just suffering from a mental health problem often called AIDS phobia.

There is no fundamental difference between results of the research led by Zhong Nanshan and that by the Ministry of Health, said Hao Yang, deputy director of the bureau of disease prevention and control at the ministry, on Friday.

Zhong Nanshan said his team agreed with the ministry on the conclusions based on its research.

Many of the people involved in Zhong's research had indulged in highly risky sexual behavior before showing the symptoms. Most of the pathogens were not detected with routine tests but with the more advanced fluorescent PCR tests, Zhong said.

Some sufferers had not received sufficient treatment before the research. With the number of AIDS cases increasing in China, the phobia over the disease has heightened, which has frustrated clinical treatments, Zhong said.

Lin Jun, a patient in the research project, said he had never thought he was infected with HIV but had been wrongly labeled as an HIV-Negative AIDS or AIDS phobia sufferer.

Lin said he was grateful for the research that confirmed he suffers from neisseria gonorrhoeae.

33 of the 60 patients in the study are reported to have tested positive for this, and is thought to be genetic, not infectious (which would explain why many claimed their family was affected). But I don't know how a PCR test would detect this, and the article below indicates that this may be the reporter using the name of the wrong disease.
