Family doctors are being urged to avoid sending patients to Wellington Hospital's emergency department after the busiest weekend on record.
A letter was sent to all doctors this week saying the hospital was overwhelmed by acute admissions and asked them to avoid sending non-urgent patients to the hospital.

Auckland hospitals have also been affected by more people suffering coughs, colds, flu and pneumonia. At Middlemore Hospital's emergency department 286 people were treated on Monday, 50 more than usual.
