  • Masks and gloves for home use when butchering and/or processing meat

Tetano recently posted a thread reporting on: "Knowledge, attitudes, and practices of avian influenza among backyard poultry breeders in Fayoum Governorate, Egypt"

After reading the article I realized I was just as guilty of not using masks or gloves when butchering chicken for my family's dinner table as they were and maybe even more so. I should know better. This was definitely a DUH! moment. It was a habit picked up as a child. Try not to cringe too much. Butchering was done with bare hands and no masks.

IMHO using masks and gloves during butchering would be a good practice to implement and there is little or no reason not to. They are not that expensive or hard to get and it is not like I don't have them. I'd just never given any thought to using them. This habit is about to change. IMHO it would also be a very good idea to recommend and encourage the use of gloves and masks when butchering and processing meat regardless of the source of the meat or who is doing it. It is also another reason to keep a good supply of them on hand.
