    Memorial held to mark 17 years since Hanshin quake

    A memorial was held on Tuesday in the port city of Kobe in western Japan to mark the 17th anniversary of the Great Hanshin Earthquake. The quake killed 6,434 people.

    Back to school

    Seventy students attend an opening ceremony for the third term of the school year on Monday at a temporary building for Toni Primary School in Kamaishi City, Iwate Prefecture. The prefabricated two-story building was built at a higher elevation on Toni Middle School grounds and was completed late last year. After the March 11 disaster, Toni students had attended classes at Heita Primary School as the tsunami flooded three stories of their own school located along the coast.

          East Timor President thanks Japan for support

          ....On Friday he is scheduled to inspect Japan's northeast which was hit hard by the earthquake and tsunami on March 11 last year. He plans to visit elementary and high schools in Sendai City.

                              Hiroshima Atom Bomb Dome undergoing check

                              The Atomic Bomb Dome in Hiroshima is undergoing an inspection to check for possible deterioration from age.

                              .....A quake-resistance test will be conducted for the first time to see if the dome would be able to withstand a powerful earthquake of 6-minus on the Japanese scale of zero to 7 and to determine if it needs to be reinforced.
