Stanislaw, 58 ans, sort sa tête d'une bouche de chauffage et tend sa gamelle le temps que la police municipale la remplisse d'une soupe, avant de redescendre vite dans son gîte de fortune, aménagé dans une station souterraine de chauffage urbain dans la banlieue de Varsovie.

Plusieurs milliers de SDF vivent dans la capitale polonaise, selon plusieurs estimations. Ils squattent aussi des bâtiments abandonnés, des maisonnettes de jardins ouvriers. "En temps normal, quand il fait autour de zéro, ça va encore. Mais là, c'est le drame", dit Monika Golebiewska de la police municipale qui effectue tous les jours des patrouilles avec des repas et des vêtements chauds.
Depuis une semaine, le froid a déjà tué une trentaine de personnes en Pologne et près de 70 depuis le début de l'hiver, en grande partie des sans logis. "Aujourd'hui, nous avons apporté de la soupe aux haricots blancs. Hier c'était du krupnik, une soupe à l'orge, avec du pain et des boites de conserves", indique la jeune femme.
"Impossible de les convaincre de se laisser transporter dans un centre d'accueil. Ils ont choisi cette vie-là, ils veulent rester libres", ajoute-elle. "Dans les centres, même un petite bière est interdite. Il faut rentrer avant 21H00. Et moi, c'est la nuit que je fais les poubelles pour ramasser des cannettes vides", dit Zygmunt, satisfait de sa dernière collecte: il en a ramassé 2,5 kilos et gagné 10 zlotys (2,5 euros). Son copain Waldek a eu encore plus de chance. Il a ramassé de la ferraille pour 52 zlotys.
Et demain?
"Lors de chaque patrouille, nous avons peur de trouver quelqu'un qui soit mort", dit Golebiewska. Elle n'oubliera jamais le jour où elle a trouvé un homme sans vie. C'était il y a un an. Paradoxalement, l'homme d'une cinquantaine d'années n'est pas mort de froid: son coeur a lâché, fatigué d'avoir vécu trop longtemps dans une cave trop chaude et trop humide.
Le réseau du chauffage urbain varsovien SPEC, l'un des plus vastes en Europe avec 1.700 km de tuyaux, a été racheté par le français Dalkia. "Des hommes d'affaires français ont racheté la société. Pour l'instant, on ne nous chasse pas, mais comment ce sera dans l'avenir?", s'interroge Zygmunt. (afp)
