If at least 100 (and several hundred according to the initial post) people have been reportedly hospitalized due to respiratory infection with only one death reported, SARS would be an unlikely suspect, with an estimated CFR from the 2003 outbreak of 10%-18%.

H1N1 would be a far more likely culprit. Remember, even in Mexico in 2009, the first H1N1 cases were mistakenly reported as "SARS".

From several Weibo posts. Certainly sounds like this hospital has an ARI outbreak, and perhaps an unexplained respiratory fatality.

http://badcanto.wordpress.com/tag/sars-2012-china/

[snip]

讀80後: There is a rumour in Baoding that 252 Hospital had isolated a SARS patient. I wish that it was just a rumour. Everyone should treat it rationally and the rumour stops. Go China! Go Baoding! Go 80′s

糖鍋子: I really wish that it was just a rumour. However, a floor of Baoding 252 Hospital is isolated, and there is even armed police guarding. Just go there and see. Whether it is serious or not, I hope that related department would make annoucement

[snip]

Today I wanted to have vaccine injection. However, a doctor said 252 Hospital is closed because of a mutated SARS virus. That is really frightening.

[snip]

There is a case of mutated SARS in Baoding. The patient was a soldier in Baoding Hospital and he is dead. And the hospital has stopped receiving patients.

[snip]

1. I heard the rumour half a month ago. It is not SARS. It is stronger than SARS.
2. I heard that Baoding 252 Hospital didn’t accept patients anymore. It was said that there were soldiers and the contagiousness was very great. However, it wasn’t SARS. The fever could be brought down but was uncontrollable. The fever could be brought down in the morning and it would come back on the afternoon or evening. That’s what I heard. Please confirm. Thank you.
3. It wasn’t happened in 252 hospital. It was happened in the school of PLA. A group of soldier ate bad things and their fevers couldn’t be brought down. 252 Hospital suspects that it is SARS. Those solders have already been isolated. The hospital has blocked info exchange. Everybody please don’t go there. I have relatives in there. They told me today.

[snip]

XXOO:Hubei Baoding No. 252 Hospital of PLA. Now they have received more than 100 patients.
■■■■■: There is rumour about Baoding No.252 Hospital. However, it is not very detailed.
XXOO: Mutated SARS. The first patient is from the PLA school in Qingyuan, Baoding. Most of the patients in the hospital are young soldiers. Because this is a PLA hospital.
■■■■■: What about the symptons? Are they same as SARS? Fever?
XXOO: It was said that Baidu News and Baoding News would release info. However, I don’t know the reason for not releasing news. It was transmitted through upper respiratory tract

10 years ago, when SARS swept through Asia has been caused by a high degree of panic. Taiwan Department of Health, Centers for Disease Control did not treat it lightly, this (23) afternoon formal verification to the official Chinese news true or false, but so far, the Chinese government has yet to recover.

Taiwan media reports, "Baidu Post Bar", "End", "microblogging" and other large Internet forums in China and Hong Kong Golden Forum "since the past few days, there have been friends a message directly named in Hebei, China Province, Baoding, China People's Liberation Army 252 Hospital, some people infected with the SARS (Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome), and there was one death, hundreds of people suspected of being infected are under quarantine.

Chinese Netizens Claim SARS Has Returned Blog posts say several have already died
By Shen Yuqing
Epoch Times Staff Created: February 23, 2012 Last Updated: February 24, 2012 .Related articles: China » Society

Netizens in China are raising the alarm about the return of a deadly illness—they say SARS is back in China, and Chinese officials cannot be trusted to keep people safe.

Posts on well-known blog sites such as Baidu, Tianya, and Weibo in mainland China and the Golden Forum in Hong Kong say that: hospitals in China are once again seeing SARS patients; several patients have died; and nearly 100 are quarantined.

SARS—the acronym stands for Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome—appeared in 2003, infecting over 8000 people in 26 countries, and causing 774 deaths, according to an article in the New England Journal of Medicine, which describes SARS as the 21st century’s first pandemic.

According to the netizens’ posts, SARS has appeared in two spots in northeastern China: Baoding in Hebei Province and in Dalian City in Liaoning Province. Local residents in Baoding also told Epoch Times reporters that there were SARS cases in the area.

According to an article in CNA, the Taiwan news service, on Feb. 23 Taiwan’s Centers for Disease Control asked officials in Beijing to confirm whether SARS has reappeared. Later, the deputy director of Taiwans’ Centers for Disease Control, Zhou Zhihao, announced that China’s Department of Public Health denied there was another outbreak of SARS.

According to a netizen, Hong Kong officials were given the same answer.

Anderson Chen Xingchang posted a message on Sina blog: “Regarding the hearsay that the No. 252 Hospital in Baoding had found SARS patients recently, Hong Kong Department of Health has communicated with China’s Department of Health, and learned that the initial result indicated it was not SARS. Related departments in China will release the information later.”

In response to the official denials, netizens reminded each other of Beijing’s cover-up of SARS in 2003. One of them said, “Be on your guard! If you trust mainland China’s information channel, even if you trust 5 percent of it, you will die. Do you still remember what happened when SARS broke out years ago?”

OK. I absolutely believe that an unidentified ARI outbreak in Hebei caused a SARS rumor, but what about Dalian? I haven't found any details as to the source of that rumor yet...

Rumors of New SARS Cases in China Spread Online
Created: 2012-02-24:07.3053

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Category: China According to unconfirmed rumors, SARS victims are being treated at the No. 252 People's Liberation Army Hospital in Baoding, Hebei province, China. Chinese authorities have denied any SARS outbreak. Rumors are spreading online about a possible new outbreak of SARS in China. SARS, or Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome, spreads through close person-to-person contact.

Online reports said that SARS had appeared in Baoding of Hebei Province and Dalian City of Liaoning Province. They also said some people have died.

According to The Epoch Times, locals confirmed that SARS cases were found in Baoding.

On Thursday, Taiwan’s Centers for Disease Control asked officials in mainland China to confirm the recent outbreak of SARS, according to Taiwanese media. But Chinese officials denied it.

Rumors about SARS in China are spreading on the country’s major websites. Those include Baidu, Tianya, and Weibo.

Netizens believe that officials are just covering up the issue – a reminder of how they handled the SARS outbreak in 2003.

The first case of SARS was found in Guangdong Province in 2002, and spread throughout the world in 2003. Chinese officials did not inform the WHO about the Guangdong outbreak for three months.

According to WHO statistics, in 2003, there were 8,096 suspected cases, causing 774 deaths. One of the major countries infected was mainland China, with 5,327 cases.

CDC denies China SARS outbreak report
BETTER SAFE THAN SORRY:Late yesterday the Chinese health authorities told the CDC the outbreak in Hebei Province had been confirmed to be an adenovirus type 55 infection
Staff Writer, with CNA

The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) said on Thursday that there was no SARS (severe acute respiratory syndrome) outbreak in China, despite unverified reports circulating on the Internet.

The Chinese health authorities have said that there is no SARS outbreak within its territory, CDC Deputy Director-General Chou Jih-haw (周志浩) said on Thursday.

[snip]

Chou said that adenovirus infection was easy to treat and that the CDC did not need to investigate any further.

Adenovirus type 55 infection was first discovered in China’s Shaanxi Province in 2006. Of 254 high school students treated for the infection, only one died.

There is no record of adenovirus type 55 infection in Taiwan, CDC statistics show.

About adenovirus
http://emedicine.medscape.com/article/211738-overview

It is worth noting that whilst most adenovirus infections are minor producing cold like symptoms, they can also (rarely) be severe; there are subtypes e.g. adenovirus14 which can be severe.

http://www.cdc.gov/adenovirus/adenovirus-14.html

The above report cites Adenovirus 55, but it is unusual for large numbers of hospitalisations to occur with adenovirus infection.
Footnote: I cannot find any clinical research reports or data on type55 adenovirus, so it is an unknown if this is a known 'severe' viral type, or similar to type 7 or 14 in its clinical presentation

I am encouraged by this entire episode, both in how the information made it out anyhow, as well as the fact that China seems to still be testing severe ARI cases for SARS.

As far as severity, we have several reports here on FT of adenovirus outbreaks in military camps in Malaysia with multiple fatalities (http://www.flutrackers.com/forum/sho...d.php?t=163686 for example). Post #18 mentions an adenovirus 55 outbreak in 2006 in China with a fatality in it as well. It is impossible to know the denominator in Baoding, but it could be quite large.

Although the Chinese Communist authorities rumor vigorously denied that the 252 Chinese military hospital outbreak of suspected atypical pneumonia (SARS) infection epidemic events, but the authorities lack credibility, rumors have actually caused people to greater panic. "Apple" Correspondent in Hong Kong yesterday (February 24) arrived in Baoding found among the 252 Hospital of Eastern Hospital District was a military police blocked about 300 Army, 38 soldiers of the Chinese Communist elite troops were receiving isolated outside, and local public events, but unaware of this.

Reporters at the scene of the "Apple" to hit the mysterious virus 300 soldiers isolation

According to NTDTV reports, the recent rumors of the Baoding SARS epidemic, multiple sites on the mainland spread rapidly, before the network to pass the local military hospital to seal a building, 38 Group Army in Chinese Communist isolation to receive more than 100 SARS patients, including the death of a soldier.

Hong Kong's Apple Daily reporter deliberately arrived in Baoding, Hebei, live interviews, found among the 252 Hospital of Eastern Hospital District was a military and police blocked about 300 Chinese military elite troops, attached to the 38th Regiment soldiers were receiving isolated outside, near the belong to the military Hebei Invalides is also the soldiers were isolated, resident of the 38 group army also blocked.

The reporter witnessed, 252 Hospital of the West Branch is normally open to the public, but fifty-four East Road, Eastern Hospital, Hebei University, South Campus next to the inpatient department downstairs, wearing masks guarded by military police. Nearby stall, said the evening, one week ago, witnessed hundreds of soldiers were pulled here to check isolation, I heard that two people have died. Reporters wishing to enter the Eastern Hospital District, but said about 300 soldiers, including isolation, not allowed to enter the guard block.

"Apple Daily" quoted the words of the hospital, a retired medical personnel, said the Chinese military experts are inside the test, patients with serious cases of fever subside.

Nearby traders say, from 10 a few days ago, the 38th Army a succession of soldiers with a fever, was first sent to Hebei Province, near the Invalides, followed by as much as an even 80% of soldiers cold and persistent fever, caused by his superiors attention, began to seal the entire group. One week ago, military vehicles to a large number of soldiers have symptoms of infection to the 252 hospital isolation, but there are still soldiers of the Invalides hospital isolation.

Tight news blockade, although the Internet on the sand epidemic more speculation more intense Baoding face unusually quiet public life as usual. Many of the 252 military hospital, a large number of soldiers have been isolated and has no knowledge of, and even the 252 near the hospital, many residents are unaware of.

The 24th Chinese Communist CDC Deputy Secretary Jih-Haw Chou also said outside the 252 hospital epidemic caused by adenovirus infection is a common virus, can cause fever, sore throat, respiratory infections, there was no danger, people do not need to panic.

Last night (24) have claimed to be living near the hospital in the 252 users, 38 corps of nearly 600 soldiers were 252 hospital isolation in the hospital! Now panic! Authorities concealed omission! Until the big thing on all night.

Online rumors intensified, Baoding Health Bureau, came forward to clarify the SARS epidemic in the city there is no relevant patients are ordinary flu, no deaths, the hospitals are functioning normally; People come forward to clarify; major forums, micro- Bo, Shantie "rumor", but the Communist authorities always cover up the truth, deception, promises to the people, the more denied to clarify that Internet users more seriously, the more panic.

Some netizens have questioned the authorities ambivalent doubt behind may be involved in the military suppression of the truth, and also said that the rumor is not terrible, horrible thing is that the "government" out of the rumor! Some netizens lashed out at the authorities have failed to learn from the painful experience of the 2003 SARS, so that the instability of social support of the people.

Hong Kong's Oriental Daily News review article pointed out the lie to a person, personality is bound to bankruptcy, a "government" blatant lie is bound to the integrity of sweeping.

These years, the Chinese Communist authorities in many of the issues related to the national economy and deliberately lying, such as the Bureau of Statistics, property prices, inflation data and the personal experience of the people bad days to do.

The article criticized the authorities are facing the overwhelming voices of doubt, the departments concerned not only done nothing wrong, but playing with words to deceive the people, the so-called professional vocabulary.

It remains the difficulty of a laboratory confirmed identification of a SARS-CoV case because of the lack of a consensus diagnostics test kits.

For more information about SARS-CoV laboratory testing, see the online book by Christian Drosten, M.D. et al. at: http://www.sarsreference.com/sarsref...rd_italian.pdf (available in several languages, English included)
