    Typhoid fears halt asylum transfers

    THE detection of typhoid in detainees on Christmas Island has prompted the federal government to halt the stream of flights bringing boatpeople to mainland Australia as the Immigration Department and health authorities work to minimise the risk of an outbreak.

    The Immigration Department confirmed yesterday that two recently arrived Indonesian crew members from separate asylum boats had been found to be infected with the contagious disease.

    Tuberculosis has occasionally been detected among detainees on the island in recent years but residents and immigration workers contacted by The Australian could not recall a case of typhoid since 2001...

    ELEANOR HALL: Department of Immigration officials are saying today that they've taken all the necessary measures to keep a lid on the outbreak of typhoid on Christmas Island.

    So far, two men who arrived in Australia on separate boats have tested positive to the highly contagious bacterial disease.

    One of them is now in isolation at the detention centre's hospital, the other has been airlifted to a Fremantle hospital.
