Whooping cough rises dramatically in Hunterdon County

Reports of pertussis cases have increased 625% in Hunterdon County over last year, according to the county Division of Health.

While case numbers for 2011 and 2012 are not official, it is known that for the period between September 2010 through May 2011, eight confirmed and probable cases of pertussis — also known as whooping cough — occurred in Hunterdon County. During that same period for 2011 to 2012, 50 cases occurred, with 72% of these cases appearing in the townships of Alexandria, Clinton and Raritan. In addition to these 50 cases, another 15 cases remain under investigation from this latest period.

“We’re witnessing an increase in pertussis in Hunterdon County” reported Rose Puelle, epidemiologist for the division. “Since November, we’ve continued to see consecutive months of higher pertussis cases here in the county than in the previous period; 47 cases compared to four cases...”

Physicians in North Jersey are diagnosing more cases of whooping cough, a highly contagious respiratory infection that’s treatable in most cases but can be fatal to infants.

At Tenafly Pediatrics, 20 cases have been confirmed this year with lab tests, the practice reports. Physicians in the group say they’ve treated even more people with suspected cases, including one patient last week — bound for summer camp with a note explaining that the lingering cough was no longer contagious...

A nationwide outbreak of whooping cough — clinically known as Pertussis — has made its way to Mercer County and has left many local doctors and public health officials concerned about how many could become afflicted, with the number of cases this year already twice as many in 2011...

...Based on yet unofficial data, Mercer County has already reported 37 cases so far in 2012, according to the state Department of Health and Senior Services. That is nearly double the number of cases reported in the county for all of 2011.

Statewide the number of confirmed cases has risen from 96 last year to 235 so far in 2012, according to the most up-to-date state information. There have also been 150 probable cases of the bacterial disease reported in the state in the last seven months...

Pertussis, also known as whooping cough, is on the rise in New Jersey, and Cumberland, Salem and Gloucester counties have been no exception...

...Statewide, there have been 972 cases of confirmed, probable and possible pertussis this year, according to the New Jersey Department of Health (NJDOH) Communicable Disease Service. Of these, 438 cases were confirmed as whooping cough through testing.

For perspective, the NJDOH Communicable Disease Service has reported 3,215 cases of whooping cough in New Jersey since 2001 — meaning this year’s numbers represent nearly a third of the cases reported as confirmed, probable or possible pertussis throughout the state in the past 11 years...
