    SITUATION UPDATE

    12/07/2012 A total of two human cases of West Nile fever have been reported in the EU and five cases in neighbouring countries.

    Between 6 ? 12 July, the Hellenic Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (KEELPNO) reported the two first human cases of West Nile fever in Greece this year in the Prefecture of Attiki, both cases residing in the suburbs of Athens. More information on West Nile fever in Greece can be found on the KEELPNO website.

    In the Russian Federation, the health authorities reported 5 cases of West Nile fever from Astrakhan Oblast.

    SITUATION UPDATE

    19/07/2012

    A total of six human cases of West Nile fever have been reported in the EU and 12 cases in neighbouring countries.

    This week, Greece reported four new cases in the Attiki region, all cases residing in the suburbs of Athens. More information on West Nile fever in Greece can be found on the KEELPNO website.

    In neighbouring countries, Volgograd Oblast in the Russian Federation recorded two cases, and five cases were reported in Israel and the occupied Palestinian territory.

      SITUATION UPDATE

      26/07/2012

      A total of 14 human cases of West Nile fever have been reported in the EU and 20 cases in neighbouring countries.

      This week, Greece reported 6 new cases in the Attiki region and 1 confirmed case in Evvoia - a new affected area. More information on West Nile fever in Greece can be found on the KEELPNO website.

      The Italian Ministry of Health reports a first West Nile fever case from Oristano, Sardinia, an area that was affected last year.

      In neighbouring countries, the Russian Federation reported 8 new cases in the Volgogradskaya Oblast. No new cases were reported this week from Israel and the occupied Palestinian territory.

        SITUATION UPDATE

        16/08/2012 As of 16 August 2012, 58 human cases of West Nile fever have been reported in the EU and 97 cases in neighbouring countries.

        Since the last update, Greece has detected 13 new cases in the prefectures of Attiki (3), Achaia (1) and Xanthi (7), areas with previous case reports, and two probable cases from the newly affected prefectures of Aitoloakarnania and Kavala.

        In Italy, no new confirmed cases have been detected. Media reported on a WNV positive crow in northern Sardinia.

        In neighbouring countries, the Russian Federation published no update for Volgogradskaya oblast, but reported 17 new cases in Astrakhanskaya oblast, an area with previous case reports.

        In Tunisia, EpiSouth reported one West Nile laboratory confirmed neuroinvasive case in a patient living in the Monastir governorate, a coastal area with records of previous WN outbreaks in 1997 and 2003

          SITUATION UPDATE

          23/08/2012 As of 23 August 2012, 91 human cases of West Nile fever have been reported in the EU and 143 cases in neighbouring countries.

          Since the last update, Greece has detected 29 new cases, two probable cases from the newly affected prefecture of Chalkidiki, 26 in areas with previous case reports (Attiki 3, kavala 8, Samos 1, Thessaloniki 2, Xanthi 12) and one whose location is not known.           Additional information on West Nile infection in equids in Attiki is available from the World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE).

          In Romania, the first four cases (3 confirmed and one probable) have been reported: one from Bucuresti municipality (Bucharest), one from Braila county and two from Ilfov county.

          In neighbouring countries, the Russian Federation reported 42 new cases, 20 in new affected areas (Adygeya republic 2, Lipetskaya oblast 2, Novosibirskaya oblast 1, Rostovskaya oblast 13, Tatarstan republic 2) and 22 from Volgogradskaya oblast, an area with previous case reports.

          In Serbia, the first four cases were reported from Grad Beograd (1) and Juzno-Banatski district (3).

            SITUATION UPDATE

            30/08/2012 As of 30 August 2012, 115 human cases of West Nile fever have been reported in the EU and 224 cases in neighbouring countries.

            Since the last update, Greece has detected 20 new cases, one probable case from the newly affected prefecture of Pella and 19 in areas with previous case reports (Achaia 1, Aitoloakarnania 1, Attiki 2, kavala 3, Thessaloniki 1, Xanthi 11).             In Romania, four new confirmed cases have been reported: two from the newly affected counties of Giurgiu and Ialomita and two from Bucuresti municipality (Bucharest), an area with previous case reports.

            In neighbouring countries, Israel has reported 11 new cases, eight from new affected districts (Northern 2, Southern 1, Tel Aviv 5) and three from districts with previous case reports (Central 2, Haifa 1).

            In the occupied Palestinian territory, one case has been reported in a new area, Ramallah.

            In Russia 70 new cases have been reported, 11 in a new oblast (Voronezhskaya) and 59 in oblasts with previous case reports (Astrakhanskaya 15 and Volgogradskaya 44). However, one case previously reported in Lipetskaya oblast is now identified as an imported case. Thus it has been removed from the table.

              SITUATION UPDATE

              06/09/2012 As of 6 September 2012, 136 human cases of West Nile fever have been reported in the EU and 311 cases in neighbouring countries.

              Since the last update, Greece has detected 12 new cases, one probable case from the newly affected prefecture of Lefkada and 11 in areas with previous case reports (Attiki 1, kavala 4, Thessaloniki 1, Xanthi 5).               In Hungary, the two first confirmed cases have been reported from Csongrád and Hajdú-Bihar counties.

              In Italy, three new confirmed cases have been reported: one from the newly affected province of Treviso and two from Venezia, a province with previous case reports.

              In Romania, four new confirmed cases have been reported: one from the newly affected counties of Iasi and three from areas with previous case reports: Bucuresti municipality (Bucharest), Braila county and Giurgiu county.

              In neighbouring countries, the Russian Federation has reported 76 new cases, 6 in new oblasts (Belgorodskaya 2 and Saratovskaya 4) and 70 in oblasts with previous case reports (Astrakhanskaya 2, Lipetskaya 12, Rostovskaya 13, Volgogradskaya 25 and Voronezhskaya 18).

              In Serbia, 11 new cases were reported whose location is not available for the moment.

                SITUATION UPDATE

                13/09/2012 As of 13 September 2012, 157 human cases of West Nile fever have been reported in the EU and 372 cases in neighbouring countries.

                Since the last update, Greece has detected 11 new cases, two cases from the newly affected prefecture of Drama and 9 in areas with previous case reports (Achaia 1, Chalkidiki 1, Kavala 3, Thessaloniki 1, Xanthi 3).                 In Italy, 9 new confirmed cases have been reported: two from the newly affected province of Vicenza and seven from Venezia, a province with previous case reports. The neuro-invasive cases (five since the beginning of the 2012 transmission season) were detected through the National surveillance programme. The remaining cases (8) were detected through special surveillance implemented since 2010, in the Veneto region (for more information see CDC study Surveillance for West Nile, Dengue, and Chikungunya Virus Infections, Veneto Region, Italy, 2010).

                In Romania, one new confirmed case has been reported from Bucuresti municipality (Bucharest), an area with previous case reports.

                In neighbouring countries, Croatia has reported the three first autochthonous cases from two counties, Osjecko-baranjska (2) and Vukovarsko-srijemska (1). These cases are currently identified as probable cases but confirmation by neutralisation is in progress.                 The Russian Federation has reported 43 new cases in oblasts with previous case reports (Astrakhanskaya 3, Lipetskaya 4, Rostovskaya 12, Volgogradskaya 24).

                In Serbia, 15 new cases have been reported. In addition, the location has been provided for 11 cases already reported in the previous update of the WN map. Two of these 26 cases are located in the new district of Sremski (2) and the others in districts with previous case reports, Grad Beograd (21) and Juzno-Banatski (2). For one case, the location is still unknown.

                    SITUATION UPDATE

                    20/09/2012 As of 20 September 2012, 184 human cases of West Nile fever have been reported in the EU and 430 cases in neighbouring countries.

                    Since the last update, Greece has detected 13 new cases in areas with previous case reports (Achaia 1, Chalkidiki 1, Drama 3, Imathia 1, Kavala 1, Pella 1, Xanthi 5).

                    In Hungary, two new confirmed cases have been reported from two newly affected counties, Somogy (probable case) and Tolna (confirmed case).

                    In Italy, 11 new confirmed cases of neuro-invasive infection have been reported: two from the newly affected province of Oristano and nine from provinces with previous case reports (Venezia 8, Treviso 1).

                    In Romania, one new confirmed case has been reported from Bucuresti municipality (Bucharest), an area with previous case reports.

                    In neighbouring countries, Croatia has reported a new autochthonous case from a newly affected county, Brodsko-Posavska.

                    Israel has reported 22 new cases in districts with previous case reports (Central 2, Haifa 6, Northern 2, Southern 6, Tel Aviv 6).

                    In Kosovo*, the first probable case has been reported in Kosovski region (Pristina).

                    The Russian Federation has reported 31 new cases in oblasts with previous case reports (Astrakhanskaya 5, Belgorodskaya 2, Lipetskaya 10, Volgogradskaya 14).

                    In Tunisia, EpiSouth has reported three new cases in two newly affected areas: Kebili Nord, Kebili governorate (2) and Zarmedine, Monastir governorate (1).

                      SITUATION UPDATE

                      27/09/2012 As of 27 September 2012, 204 human cases of West Nile fever have been reported in the EU and 461 cases in neighbouring countries.

                      Since the last update, Greece has detected 10 new cases, one probable case from the newly affected prefecture of Arta, eight from areas with previous case reports (Attiki 1, Drama 2, Imathia 1, Kavala 2, Lefkada 1, Thessaloniki 1) and one whose location (Aitoloakarnania) has to be confirmed.

                      In the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia, the four first cases have been reported from the Skopje region and the municipalities of Krusevo, Lipkovo and Struga.

                      Israel has reported nine new cases in districts with previous case reports (Haifa 3, Northern 2, Southern 3, Tel Aviv 1).

                      Kosovo* has reported through EpiSouth three new cases, two in the newly affected regions of Kosovsko-Pomoravski and Prizremski, and one in Kosovski region (Pristina), an area with previous case reports.

                      The Russian Federation has reported 14 new cases in oblasts with previous case reports (Astrakhanskaya 5, Lipetskaya 2, Volgogradskaya 7).

                        SITUATION UPDATE

                        4/10/2012 As of 4 October 2012, 214 human cases of West Nile fever have been reported in the EU and 489 cases in neighbouring countries.

                        Since the last update, Greece has detected 2 new cases from areas with previous case reports (Lefkada 1, Thessaloniki 1).

                        In Italy, eight new cases of West Nile fever have been reported: one from the newly affected province of Padova and seven from provinces with previous case reports (Treviso 1, Venezia 6).
                        These cases have been reported by the Veneto Region to the Ministry of Health, according to the Veneto Region Special Surveillance Program. Additional information on West Nile surveillance in Italy is available from theMinistero della Salute, Epicentro and the Istituto G Caporale.

                        In neighbouring countries, the Russia has reported 13 new cases, one in the newly affected oblast of Chelyabinskaya and 12 in oblasts with previous case reports (Volgogradskaya 6, Voronezhskaya 6).

                        In Serbia, 15 new cases have been reported, whose location is not available for the moment.

                          SITUATION UPDATE

                          11/10/2012 As of 11 October 2012, 223 human cases of West Nile fever have been reported in the EU and 516 cases in neighbouring countries.

                          Since the last update, Greece has detected five new cases, one from the newly affected prefecture of Kerkyra and four from prefectures with previous case reports (Kavala 3, Pella 1).                           In Italy, four new cases of West Nile fever have been detected in Venezia, a province with previous case reports. These cases have been reported by the Veneto Region to the Ministry of Health, according to the Veneto Region Special Surveillance Program.                           In neighbouring countries, the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia has reported a new case from the Skopje region, an area with previous case reports. Additional information is available from the Institute for Public Health of the Republic of Macedonia.

                          Russia has reported 15 new cases in oblasts with previous case reports (Rostovskaya 9, Volgogradskaya 5, Voronezhskaya 1).

                            SITUATION UPDATE

                            18/10/2012 As of 18 October 2012, 224 human cases of West Nile fever have been reported in the EU and 538 cases in neighbouring countries.

                            Since the last update, Greece has detected one new case from Thessaloniki, a prefecture with previous case reports.

                            In neighbouring countries, the first confirmed case of West Nile fever has been reported from the province of Jijel, Algeria. (For more information, see the bulletin from InVS and the EpiSouth bulletin).

                            The Russian Federation has reported two new cases in Voronezhskaya, an oblast with previous case reports.

                            This week, Serbia has reported six new cases, two from the new districts of Sumadijski and Zapadno-Backi and four from districts with previous case reports (Grad Beograd 3, Sremski 1).
                            In addition, the number of case previously reported has been updated. All these cases are located in districts with previous case reports (Grad Beograd 43, Juzno-Banatski 9 and Sremski 5). For one case, the location is still unknown.
