College student with AH3 flu virus dies
A 21-year-old male college student died nine days after being infected with the AH3 virus, the Department of Health (DOH) announced yesterday.
Near the end of August the student started having fever-like symptoms and sore muscles. Shortly after being hospitalized he was transferred to an intensive care unit. On Sept. 7 he was pronounced dead, with pneumonia and multiple organ failure credited as the cause of death.
People infected with AH3, a virus now prevalent in Taiwan, generally develop severe symptoms and often see their conditions deteriorate, Centers for Disease Control (CDC) officials said.
According to CDC statistics, there have been 260 cases of influenza with complications confirmed this July, with AH3 the main virus. Among these cases were 25 deaths. None of those who died had received influenza vaccines...
