HFM, dengue fever develop unpredictably
VietNamNet Bridge – The Preventive Healthcare Centre in southern Dong Nai Province warned that hand-foot-mouth disease (HFM) and dengue fever has developed quickly and unexpectedly across the region.

Centre statistics show that HFM disease has spread to 169 out of 171 communes, affecting 2,000 people and killing two since earlier this year.

Meanwhile, nearly 1,800 people have contracted dengue fever in 154 communes, with one patient succumbing to the disease.

Hand-foot-mouth pandemic in Mekong Delta
Vo Huy Danh, director of the Preventive Medicine Center in the Mekong delta province of An Giang, said that despite all efforts to curb hand-foot-mouth disease in the province, there continues to be a disease pandemic which is not abating.

Recently, the hand-foot-mouth disease has claimed the lives of seven children in An Giang Province and 1,300 infectious cases have been reported so far, ten times higher than in the first three months of the year.

Dr. Nguyen Van Binh, head of the Department of Preventive Medicine under the Ministry of Health, said on July 12 that the hand-foot-mouth disease and dengue fever have developed in a complicated way that is now afflicting more people and increasing fatality rates.

Since the beginning of this year, the country has recorded more than 63,000 hand-foot-mouth patients including 34 child deaths. Despite a decrease in the number of fresh cases in recent weeks, the numbers are still high with 1,900 people being infected each week compared to 3,000 people per week earlier.

An Giang struggles with HFMD epidemic
The People's Committee of the Cuu Long (Mekong) Delta province of An Giang has asked its Health Department to make a plan to curb the spread of the hand, foot and mouth disease. The plan should cover increased checks and treatment in affected areas, educating people about the disease, improving treatment quality and training medical personnel.
A total of 1,478 people in the province have contracted the disease so far this year, seven times higher than the same period last year. An average of 70 people are being hospitalised every week. The disease has so far killed nine people, the highest number in the country.

As of June 10, 2012, the Vietnam Ministry of Health confirmed that approximately 57,800 people in 63 provinces have had hand, foot, and mouth disease (HFMD) since the beginning of 2012; 29 people in 14 provinces died. More HFMD cases have occurred in the northern region of Vietnam. However, there have been more HFMD-associated deaths in the southern region. The Vietnam Ministry of Health is working with World Health Organization to control the outbreak.

Large outbreaks of severe HFMD occur frequently in some countries in Asia. Thousands of people may get infected during these outbreaks. Some people, particularly young children, may have severe disease requiring hospitalization or even causing death. Maintaining good hygiene, including hand washing, can help lower your risk of getting sick...

Southern Vietnam faces HFMD, dengue fever epidemic threat

The number of hand-foot-mouth disease (HFMD) and dengue fever cases is rapidly increasing in Ho Chi Minh City, threatening to assume epidemic proportions, a local official said Tuesday.

Addressing a meeting on epidemic prevention, Nguyen Dac Tho, vice director of the Ho Chi Minh City Preventive Health Center, said 950 cases of HFMD have been recorded this month, 147 more than last month.

Overall, the city’s hospitals have admitted nearly 5,000 patients with the disease since the beginning of the year, and six people have died, he said.

Vietnam’s Health Ministry said the spread of hand, foot, and mouth disease is cooling its heels as dengue infects more people and bird flu threaten to recur.
The number of new HFMD cases has dropped and caused six deaths in July.

Over 11,000 hospitalised for hand-foot-mouth disease
HCM CITY — More than 11,000 people were hospitalised with hand-foot-mouth disease in August, and six people died, according to the Ministry of Health.
However, the number of people suffering from hand-foot-mouth disease fell by 70 per cent compared to the same period last year.
Since the beginning of the year, more than 76,000 people have contracted the disease, causing 41 deaths.

The Vietnamese Ministry of Health (MoH) is reporting a large-scale outbreak, rivaling last year’s numbers. This has prompted federal health officials in the United States to issue recommendations for travelers to the Southeast Asian country, according to a Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) travel notice Nov. 7.

According to the MoH, there were approximately 116,418 people in 63 provinces confirmed with hand, foot, and mouth disease (HFMD) from January1 to October 7 2012; 42 people in 15 provinces have died.

More than half of the cases and nine out of ten fatalities are from the southern region of the country...

What Is the Current Situation?

Slightly more than half of the HFMD cases and 91% of the deaths have occurred in the southern region. The Vietnam Ministry of Health is working with World Health Organization to control the outbreak.

Large outbreaks of severe HFMD occur frequently in some countries in Asia. Thousands of people may get infected during these outbreaks. Some people, particularly young children, may have severe disease requiring hospitalization or even causing death. Maintaining good hygiene, including hand washing, can help lower the risk of getting sick.

What Is HFMD?
HFMD is a common viral illness that usually affects infants and children under 5 years of age. Adults can also get the disease.

Symptoms of hand, foot, and mouth disease include fever, blister-like sores in the mouth (often painful), and a rash. HFMD is spread from person to person by direct contact with the saliva, nasal secretions, blister fluid, and stool of an infected person. The virus can also be spread when an infected person touches objects and surfaces that are then touched by others.

An infected person is most contagious during the first week of the illness. However, the virus can stay in the stool for weeks after symptoms go away. In addition, people with HFMD do not always show signs of infection, but still could have the potential to spread the disease.

How Can Travelers Protect Themselves?
There is currently no vaccine or medicine to prevent HFMD. However, you can protect yourself from HFMD by practicing healthy personal hygiene.

Wash your hands often with soap and water, especially before eating and after going to the bathroom or changing a diaper. If soap and water are not available, use an alcohol-based hand cleaner with at least 60% alcohol. Consider packing alcohol-based hand cleaner in your carry-on luggage to ensure you have it when needed.
Disinfect dirty surfaces and soiled items. If you are able, first wash the items with soap and water; then disinfect them with a solution of chlorine bleach (made by mixing 1 tablespoon of bleach with 4 cups of water) or a cleaning product that contains bleach.
Avoid close contact such as kissing, hugging, or sharing eating utensils or cups with people who have HFMD.
There is no specific treatment for HFMD. If you do develop mouth sores:

Take over-the-counter medications to relieve pain and fever. (Caution: Aspirin should not be given to children.)
Use mouthwashes or sprays that numb mouth pain.
Drink plenty of liquids to stay hydrated.
Seek medical care:

If you are sick and unsure if you have HFMD.
If you cannot swallow liquids to stay hydrated.

HFMD is one of many infections that cause mouth sores. Depending on severity of symptoms, samples from the nose, throat, blister-like lesions, or stool may be collected and sent to a laboratory to test for viruses that cause HFMD.

Vietnam has recorded more cases of hand, foot and mouth disease this year than in 2011, but the fatality rate has decreased sharply.
