Vermont whooping cough cases surge; schools take precautions

A surge in whooping cough cases in Vermont has schools watching students carefully for signs of the highly contagious disease.

Preliminary data from the Vermont Health Department indicate 91 cases of whooping cough in December.

In 2010, there were 18 cases of whooping cough, also known as pertussis, in Vermont, according to the Health Department. In other words, the December 2011 total was five times the number for the entire previous year.

This month's case number has reached 17, health officials said...

UPDATE - Warning issued over whooping cough

BENNINGTON - The Vermont Department of Health is warning about a statewide increase in cases of whooping cough this summer.

There have been 68 confirmed cases of pertussis, commonly known as whooping cough, since June 1, bringing the state total to 201 cases this year. That already marks the most cases in a year since 1997 when there were 283 confirmed cases, following 280 cases in 1996...

BENNINGTON - More cases of whooping cough have already been reported in Vermont this year than any other over the past three decades as the state still faces a "widespread outbreak" of the disease... As of Sept. 24, there had already been 293 confirmed cases, and the number is likely over 300 on the year by this point, State Epidemiologist for Infectious Diseases Patsy Kelso said Monday...

Pertussis cases grow in Rutland

Confirmed cases of whooping cough have popped up in schools, including in Killington Elementary School and Rutland Town School, and according to the state Health Department, Rutland County’s rate of those infected is growing at a faster pace than the rest of the state...

Update: State providing free vaccination for whooping cough

BENNINGTON - The Department of Health wants all Vermonters over age 11, and especially those over 19, to get vaccinated against whooping cough and is holding clinics next week at each of its 12 district offices across the state to combat what it calls an epidemic.

In Bennington, the clinic will be at 324 Main Street, Bennington Suite 2. Dr. Patsy Kelso, state epidemiologist for infectious disease with the Department of Health, said the clinics will run from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Wednesday. The shots are free.

The Health Department has recorded 522 cases of whooping cough this year, 10 times the normal amount...
