Dengue statistics are just the tip of the iceberg in Bangalore
Published: Sunday, Nov 11, 2012, 11:40 IST
By Soumita Majumdar | Place: Bangalore | Agency: DNA

The BBMP’s record shows 961 confirmed cases of dengue this year, and in November alone the city accounted for 130 cases, revealing a sharp rise.

The actual number of cases in the city, however, may be larger by a factor of 10, because the BBMP figure only pertains to cases where samples were sent to the National Institute of Virology (NIV) for confirmation. It’s an open secret that many private hospitals treat patients with dengue-like symptoms without NIV testing.

Dengue rising in urban Madurai
By V Mayilvaganan, TNN | Dec 3, 2012, 05.12 AM IST

MADURAI: Even as rural Madurai is breathing a sigh of relief due to decline in the number of dengue cases, there has been an increase of dengue incidence in the urban limits indicating the spread of the disease to the city.

Over the past week, there were 20 dengue positive cases reported from the city everyday, at a time when dengue appears to subside in Melur that had emerged as the hotbed of the disease. The increasing positive cases from the corporation have become a cause of concern for the health officials.

On Sunday, the total number of dengue positive patients, who are being treated at the Government Rajaji Hospital (GRH), Madurai was 72. While 15 of them are from districts like Sivaganga and Virudhunagar, 27 patients are from the corporation limits, especially from the newly-annexed wards. From Melur alone, 30 dengue patients had come, but this number was far less compared to the past when much more men report with dengue from the rural area.

Ministry of Health and Family Welfare04-December, 2012 12:42 IST
Spread of Dengue
The details of State-wise figures of reported cases and deaths due to dengue in the country from 2009 onwards are Annexured. (see post #263 above - Ro)

The reported number of dengue cases in 2012 (till 26th November, 2012), as compared to 2011 have been more in the following 24 States/UTs namely Andhra Pradesh, Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Bihar, Goa, Haryana, Jammu & Kashmir, Jharkhand, Karnataka, Kerala, Madhya Pradesh, Meghalaya, Maharashtra, Mizoram, Orissa, Tamil Nadu, Uttar Pradesh, West Bengal, A&N Island, Chandigarh, Delhi, Dadra & Nagar Haveli, Daman & Diu and Puducherry. However the reported number of deaths in 2012 as compared to the previous year has been higher in 12 states namely Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, J&K, Karnataka, Kerela, Madhya Pradesh, Meghalaya, Maharashtra, Rajasthan, Tamil Nadu, West Bengal & D&N Haveli.

The percentage increase (aggregate) in number of cases and deaths between 2011 and 2012 (upto 26-11-2012) is approximately 97% and 34% respectively.

There is no single reason attributable to increase of dengue cases. Dengue is an outbreak prone disease governed by various man-made and environmental factors as under:

(i) unprecedented human population growth;

(ii) unplanned and rapid urbanization;

(iii) Inadequate waste management;

(iv) water supply mismanagement including water scarcity/interrupted supply;

(v) increased distribution and densities of vector mosquitoes due to man-made, ecological and lifestyle changes;

(vi) Gaps in public health infrastructure,

(vii) increase mobility of population

(viii) Poor infrastructure in the States to monitor vector mosquito breeding.

Government of India has taken the following steps for prevention and control of Dengue in the country:

1. Technical Assistance:

a) A Long Term Action Plan was formulated and circulated to the State/UTs for implementation in January, 2007.

b) A Mid Term Plan was developed for prevention and control of Dengue and approved by the Committee of Secretaries on 26-05-11. This plan was also circulated to the State/UTs for implementation.

c) National guidelines for clinical management of cases have been sent to the States for circulation and use in all hospitals.

2. The dengue situation in the country is closely monitored and reviewed with the States/UT Government.

a) Union Health & FW Secretary reviewed the situation in the States with the State Health Secretaries on 12th September, 2012.

b) Committees of Secretaries (CoS) reviewed the situation through video conferencing in Karnataka, Kerala, Maharashtra, Pudducherry, Tamil Nadu and West Bengal on 05th October, 2012.

c) The Union Minister for Health &FW reviewed the situation with the State Health Ministers of Delhi and Haryana on 08th October, 2012.

d) The situation in Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Kerala, Tamil Nadu and Puducherry was reviewed by the Union Minister for Health & FW on 12th October, 2012. at Chennai.

e) A review with Mission Directors, NRHM was undertaken on 31st October, 2012.

3. In view of the importance of the issue, the Union Health & FW Minister had written on 31st May, 2012 to all CMs of States & UTs to tackle the Dengue problem. An Advisory was earlier issued by the Union Health & FW Secretary on 26th March, 2012 to all Chief Secretaries and by Director NVBDCP to all Director, Health Services on 28th February, 2012.

4. Field visits were carried out to assess the preparedness and to provide technical guidance to the States.

5. Training is imparted to clinicians on case management as per GOI guidelines and to other health care functionaries on programme activities.

6. Diagnostic Facilities Provided:

(a) For augmenting diagnostic facilities, the numbers of Sentinel Surveillance Hospitals (SSHs) with laboratory support has been increased to 347 across the country from 110 and linked with 14 Apex Referral laboratories with advanced diagnostic facilities for back up support for Dengue across the country.

(b) ELISA based IgM test kits were provided to these institutes through National Institute of Virology, Pune free of cost. During current year (till 16.11.12), a total of 2312 dengue diagnostic kits (1 Kit= 96 tests) have been provided by Centre to SSHs.

(c) ELISA based NS1 test kits for early detection of cases from 1st day of disease can be procured by the States/UT Governments locally using NRHM/NVBDCP funds.

This information was given by Minister of State for Health & Family Welfare Shri Abu Hasem Khan Choudhury in written reply to a question in the Rajya Sabha today.

Another dengue death in Mumbai, deceased's wife, child infected
By Sumitra Deb Roy, TNN | Dec 7, 2012, 04.04 AM IST

MUMBAI: A 32-year-old tax agent from Malwani became the latest victim of dengue, the mosquito-borne ailment that recorded an astonishing 118% rise in the city this year over last year. At the state level too, over 100 deaths and 2,000 cases have been reported, both much higher than incidences in the last five years.

The civic body on Thursday insisted that Tariq Jafari was the fourth in the city to succumb to the sting of the aedes aegypti mosquito. It is yet to add the name of filmmaker Yash Chopra to the list of dengue fatalities. So far, 907 dengue cases have been reported in the city, of which 237 and 166 were reported in October and November, respectively.

While Jafari died at the Kokilaben Ambani hospital on Wednesday night, his four-year-old daughter Tasneem, admitted in the same hospital, remains critical. His wife Shakila, too, has tested positive for dengue. She took discharge against medical advice after hearing about Jafari's death.

Dengue deaths see rise in state
DC | Luna Dewan | 5 hours 26 min ago

Bengaluru: The State Health and Family Welfare Department as well as the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) insist that dengue cases are under control this year, but the figures show that in 2012 there has been a six-fold increase in the number of dengue positive cases and a four-fold increase in the number of dengue deaths compared to 2011. Both, the number of deaths as well as positive cases over the past four years, have been the highest in 2012.

From January 2012 to November 2012, Karnataka has recorded 3,640 dengue positive cases with 21 deaths. They were 405 dengue positive cases and five dengue deaths in 2011. In 2010 the corresponding figures were 2,285 dengue positive cases with seven dengue deaths and in 2009 there were 1,764 dengue positive cases and eight dengue deaths.

Dengue cases on the rise, count goes upto 959
By Umesh Isalkar, TNN | Dec 7, 2012, 03.31 PM IST

PUNE: As many as 14 people tested positive for dengue infection on Thursday. With this, the count of dengue infected in Pune city has gone up to 959 since January this year.

"Among the 14 cases, most are from Hadapsar and fringe areas of the city. A very few cases were found in core areas of the city," said S T Pardeshi, medical officer of health.

Usually the chill in the weather increases after Diwali. This results in a reduction in the number of mosquitoes and, consequently, in the number of dengue cases.
