    Death toll due to freezing temperature and cold-wave in Terai on the rise; Two more give way in Siraha today


    SIRAHA, DECEMBER 25 - The freezing temperature and cold-wave have claimed two lives in Siraha today. With the loss of lives today, the death toll claimed by the cold-wave in Siraha up till now has reached five.

    According to the District Administration Office, Siraha, the deceased today are 60-year old Biseshwor Yadav of Muksaar-7 and 62-year old Sahadev Mahato also from the same locality. Elsewhere, the cold-wave that has swept across Mahottari in the past week has claimed six lives so far.

    A man died from hypothermia caused by bitter cold in Mahottari district on Monday.

    Bishwanath Mandal, 50 of Shahujipatti from Jaleshwor Municipality, Ward No. 6 died due to excessive cold caused by dipping mercury in the district from the past few weeks

    Mandal's brother Raghunath said he suddenly fell on the ground while he was chopping off the firewood in his house in the morning.

    With this, the number of people who have died due to bitter cold wave in the district to 7 so far.

    Two people had died due to bitter cold wave in Mahottari district on Sunday.

    Normal life in Dhanusha, Mahottari and other eastern Terai districts has been badly affected due to sudden fall in mercury.

      Cold spell claims elderly Paswan

      BARDIBAS: Ram Brikshya Paswan (80) of a Dalit community in Jaleswor municipality-2, has been found dead at his own bed this morning.

      He has seen respiratory problems and common cold with the sharp fall of temperature for the past few days, said the family sources.

      He slept well yesterday night but is found dead this morning, said his son Shatrughna Paswan.

      Paswan died due to shivering cold, police confirmed. He lost his life to biting cold as it was difficult to manage warm clothes and nourishing diets due to extreme poverty, said Police Inspector Suraj Khadka.

      With this incident, the death toll in the district due to cold wave has reached nine.

        17 succumb to biting cold in Tarai in 10 days

        SIRAHA/MAHOTTARI: Cold wave in the Tarai districts has killed at least 17 people in the last 10 days and affected normal life in the region.

        Three people succumbed to cold in Siraha and Mahottari today. The deceased have been identified as Sahadev Mahato, 62 and Bisheshwor Yadav, 60, of Siraha, and Bishwonath Mandal, 50, of Jaleshwor, Mahottari. The death toll in Siraha has reached five while seven have lost their lives to biting cold in Mahottari in as many days.

        Four have died in Rautahat and one in Bara since mid-December, the time when temperatures in the region dip drastically.

        According to hospital sources, number of patients complaining of cold-related diseases is on the rise. ?As many as 25 patients complaining of pneumonia, common cold and other cold-related complications are visiting the hospital every day,? said Dr Prabin Jha of Rautahat District Hospital.

          Cold wave toll reaches 12 in Siraha

          SIRAHA, Dec. 31: Number of people dying due to cold has reached 12 in Siraha district.

          Of them, one is a child, six elderly women and five elderly men.

          Locals said six persons including a minor died at Itariprasahi VDC in Siraha district in the last six days due to the sudden fall in mercury.

          Mostly, dalit children and elderly persons lost their lives in the VDC due to cold as they could not manage warm clothes, said Sumitra Mandal, a teacher.

          Similarly, one elderly man and two elderly women died in Sakhipur VDC due to excessive cold, said VDC Secretary, Drabeshwor Das.

          Likewise, two people lost their lives in Jamdaha VDC and one in Tergena Govindapur VDC due to cold.

          RAUTAHAT: Cold wave sweeping across the Rauthat district has claimed three more lives on Sunday, pushing the total death toll to 14 this year. Police have identified the deceased as Tripura Devi Jha, 80, of Basatpur VDC, Radhika Devi, 85, of Gaur Municipality and Adhikari Devi Paswan of Mudawalawa. Hospital facilities are overrun with people suffering from different cold related diseases, said Dr Prabin Jha of the Rautahat district hosptial.

            Cold claims six lives in a day

            Six persons, most of them minors and senior citizens, died due to cold in various parts of the country on Monday.

            Police identified the deceased as four-year-old Sony Kora (Kapilvastu), 55-year old Chandrakala Mahato (Mahottari), 67-year-old Ibsan Ali (Rupandehi), 60-year-old Fatteh Mohammad and two-year-old Asmita Kapar (Siraha).

              Cold claims 14 lives in two days

              Flights disrupted, schools shut
              RAJBIRAJ, Jan 8: Altogether 14 elderly people -- most of them from the Dalit community of the Tarai -- have died of cold in the last two days in Saptari district, said the police.

              According to the District Police Office of Saptari, 13 elderly people died of cold on Monday while one breathed his last on Tuesday morning. With this, the death toll from cold wave has reached 22 so far in Saptari district alone.

                KATHMANDU, 9 JAN: A severe spell of cold has claimed close to 50 lives across Nepal this year even as mercury plunged below sub normal level in the capital.
                The sharp drop in temperatures over the week has taken a heavy toll, especially in the Terai and other southern Nepal regions.
                The downward drop in mercury levels continued with the temperature plunging close to minus one in the capital today.

                    Absence of timely rainfall is said to be the reason behind the chilly weather? according to meteorologists.
                    RUKUM: The number of people succumbing to cold this winter has reached three in Rukum so far.

                    Man Bahadur Khadka,67, of Badarpani in Rungha VDC-5 is the latest victim. Earlier, Durga Budhathoki of Garayela VDC-9 and Sher Bahadur Badi, residing at the Muglu river bank had died of cold.
