Bird flu found in Varde

A mallard duck that was found near Varde, has been diagnosed with bird flu, warns the Food & Drug Administration

Routine surveillance of avian influenza in Danish ducks gave today result. A mallard duck that was shot in a wetland near Varde and tested in a sample were found to be positive for the highly pathogenic avian influenza type H7. It informs Food Administration said in a statement today.

Avian influenza H7 infection to humans. But in Denmark, the infection risk for the general population is very small.

As the weather since mallard was shot, has been with alternating cold periods, it is not possible to say anything about where the other ducks from the same row, is now, and whether they are also infected with the dangerous virus .

- The discovery of bird flu is an expression of our ongoing monitoring plan works as intended. The purpose of monitoring is to keep a close eye on what happens in nature, so it can be determined whether it is necessary to increase protective measures to prevent that happening infection from wild birds to our pets and humans, says veterinary director Per Henriksen.

Poultry owners : comply with precautionary measures
Most important is that poultry owners comply with the precautionary measures against bird flu. There must be fed and watered during the fixed roof, ensuring that avoided contact with the larger wild birds and geese and ducks are kept separate from other poultry, advises Food & Drug Administration.

Highly pathogenic avian influenza, Denmark

OIE, febr 7 2013

On 18 January 2013 the Danish Veterinary and Food Administration (DVFA) informed about a finding of HPAI H7 in a pool of five wild mallards detected as part of the Danish avian influenza wild bird surveillance programme. However, after the National Veterinary Laboratory had demonstrated the presence of HPAI H7 by sequencing a distinct band visible on the RNA gel, neither the Danish National Veterinary Laboratory (DTU VET) nor the EU Reference Laboratory on Avian Influenza (AHVLA) have been able to reproduce this finding.

This may be explained by the sample having contained very sparse amount of viral RNA and freezing and thawing of the material in connection with the transport of the samples to AHVLA and the storage at DTU VET has reduced the amount of genetic material to a level below detection level. Attempts to isolate the virus were also unsuccessful both at DTU VET and AHVLA.

The lack of reproducibility of the molecular assays combined with the fact that it has not been possible to isolate the virus neither at DTU VET nor at AHVLA causes uncertainty about the finding. Therefore, the Danish Veterinary and Food Administration has consequently concluded that there is not sufficient scientific documentation for the declaration of an outbreak of HPAI H7 in wild birds. In addition, both DTU VET and AHVLA detected the presence of LPAI H5 based on cleavage site sequencing of the extracted RNA from the swab material.

However, LPAI in wild birds is not notifiable to the OIE. Note by the OIE Animal Health Information Department: Since LPAI in wild birds is not notifiable to the OIE, this event will remain published for two weeks’ time since the date of this follow-up report to inform the stakeholders about this evolution, and then it will be deleted.
