This weekly Epidemiological Bulletin is published jointly by the National Institute of Health, Islamabad and World Health Organization (WHO), Pakistan.

(29 Dec 2012 to 4 Jan 2013)

Highlights
• Measles: 191 alerts investigated this week, responding to 32 outbreaks
involving 751 measles cases and 38 deaths. Vitamin A was provided
to cases and EDOs‐H took action to improve vaccination in affected areas (Page 6)
• 84 districts have reported to DEWS in week 1, 2013. 2,308 health facilities
have shared weekly data to the Disease Early Warning System (DEWS) in this week
• 714,881 patients’ consultations were reported in week 1, 2013
compared to 640,414 consultations reported in week 52, 2012.
• Altogether 237 alerts were investigated and response were provided
to 32 outbreaks.

In week 1, 2013, no new CCHF case was reported from
Balochistan. In 2012, a total of 61 suspected cases have been reported throughout the country with 42 confirmed to date and 17 deaths;
(CFR is 40.48%). 24 confirmed cases have been reported from Balochistan; 7 from Sindh; 6 from Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and 5 from Punjab.

• Measles: 131 alerts investigated this week, responding to 30 outbreaks
involving 820 measles cases and 35 deaths in 53 districts. Vitamin‐A was provided to cases and EDOs‐H took action to improve vaccination in affected areas.
• 80 districts and 2190 health facilities have reported to DEWS this
week 2, compared with 84 districts with 2308 health facilities shared

• Measles: 122 alerts investigated this week, responding to 15 outbreaks
involving 743 measles cases and 25 deaths in 53 districts. Vitamin‐
A was provided to cases and district health teams took action to
improve vaccination in affected areas.
• 80 districts and 2406 health facilities have reported to DEWS this
week 4, compared with 81 districts with 2435 health facilities shared
weekly data in week 3, 2013 to the Disease Early Warning System (DEWS).
• 736,041 patients’ consultations were reported in week 4, 2013
compared to 849,066 consultations reported in week 3, 2013.

In week 4, 2013, no new CCHF case reported from the country. In the previous weeks, 2 cases of which one was lab confirmed have
been reported. A 40 year old female patient admitted at the Fatima Jinnah hospital isolation ward in Quetta as a suspected case of CCHF.
Laboratory results confirmed the case positive for CCHF.
The epidemiological investigation revealed that brother of
the case with history of Fever and bleeding from mouth
and nose, in critical condition was brought to Quetta from
neighboring country. The patient expired 30 minutes after
arrival at a private clinic in Quetta. The confirmed patient
was taking care of the suspected expired case at home for
a day and accompanied him to the hospital next morning.
Few days later she developed signs and symptoms and was
later confirmed positive for CCHF. The first case was having
clear history of animal contact (slaughtered a sheep). Furthermore there was one more suspected CCHF case (a close contact family member
of the first case) expired in Afghanistan also. All the three cases have epidemiological link.
In 2012, a total of 61 suspected cases have been reported throughout the country with 41 cases confirmed to date and in total 17
deaths; of which 13 deaths (CFR is 31.7%) are reported of the lab confirmed cases and 4 deaths are reported as suspected CCHF cases. 23
confirmed cases have been reported from Balochistan; 7 from Sindh; 6 from Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and 5 from Punjab. Chart at right illustrates
current situation of CCHF cases in 2012.

• Measles: 112 alerts investigated this week, responding and monitoring
to 17 outbreaks. 712 measles cases in 58 districts and 25

• 82 districts and 2407 health facilities have reported to DEWS this
week 5, compared with 80 districts with 2406 health facilities shared

Distribution of Wild Polio Virus cases Pakistan 2012 and 2013
• As of 2 February 2013, Pakistan has reported one new type‐1 wild polio case from Bin
Qasim town, Karachi, Sindh. This is the first wild polio case for the year 2013. The total
number of wild polio cases country wide for the year 2012 remains 58 (55 type‐1, 2 type‐3
& 1 mixture type‐1 & 3) from 28 districts/tribal agencies (compared to 60 in 2011).

• Measles: 139 alerts investigated this week, responding and monitoring
to 15 outbreaks. 718 measles cases in 53 districts and 14
deaths reported from 6 districts this week. Vitamin‐A drops provided

• 80 districts and 2481 health facilities have reported to DEWS this
week 6, compared with 82 districts with 2407 health facilities shared

In week 6, 2013, one new type‐1 wild polio case was reported from Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (district Bannu), bringing the total number of polio cases to 2 for the year 2013. This is the 2nd wild polio case for the year 2013. The total number of wild polio cases country wide for the year 2012 remains 58 (55 type‐1, 2 type‐3 & 1 mixture type‐1 & 3) from 28 districts/ tribal agencies (compared to 60 in 2011).

bringing the total number of CCHF cases to 3 for the year 2013.

26 year old female patient admitted at the PIMS hospital in Islamabad
as a suspected case of CCHF. Laboratory results confirmed
the case positive for CCHF. The epidemiological investigation
revealed history of Fever with rash later on developed gum
bleeding and brought to PIMS hospital. Currently the patient is
stable with all vital signs with in the normal range. The case have
no epidemiological link.

(14 to 20 Apr, 2013)

• Measles: This week a total of 29 alerts investigated, responding and
monitoring 4 outbreaks. 131 measles cases were reporting from 17
districts. Vitamin‐A drops provided to all the suspects and district
health teams took action to improve vaccination in affected areas.
• 68 districts and 1909 health facilities have reported to DEWS this
week 16, compared with 67 districts with 1933 health facilities
shared weekly data in week 15, 2013 to the Disease Early Warning
System (DEWS).
• 660,250 patients’ consultations were reported in week 16, 2013
compared to 741,952 consultations reported in week 15, 2013.
• Altogether 58 alerts were investigated and response were provided
to 6 outbreaks.

• In week 16, 2013, no new polio case reported from any district. The total number of polio
cases as well as the infected districts/towns in the country for the year 2013 remain 6

were reported; 1 from district Killasaifullah, Balochistan (Lab
confirmed positive, case was expired), and 2nd case belongs
to Afghanistan Lab reported negative for CCHF.
The expired
case was 35 years old male and is a driver by profession
found clear contact history with animals, taking care in home
and as well as transporting animal in his vehicle from market
to different places. A few days ago he delivered some cattle
and later on developed high grade fever, body ache with gum
bleeding. Platelets count was 8000 only and could not survived.
Health session in the community conducted. The total
8 CCHF cases have been reported in year 2013.
