U.S. Donates 1 Million Doses of Swine Fever Vaccine to Guatemala

    26 March 2013

Washington ? The U.S. Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service has transferred 1 million doses of classical swine fever (CSF) vaccine to Guatemala?s Ministry of Agriculture and Food Safety.

The Inspection Service ?recognizes the prevalence of CSF in Guatemala and responded immediately to their request for assistance to help control their latest outbreak,? said Dr. John R. Clifford, the chief veterinary officer at the U.S. Department of Agriculture. ?We sent a team of subject-matter experts to assess the situation and concluded that the use of much-needed vaccine would help in containing the spread of the disease.?

The request for help came from the Guatemalan chief veterinary officer, Dr. Humberto Maldonado.

The vaccines will help control and limit the spread of CSF in Guatemala and neighboring countries, the Inspection Service said in a March 25 news release. Among those countries are Mexico, which is working to eradicate the disease, and the United States, which has been free of CSF for more than 30 years.

?With trade opportunities increasing each year, the promotion of animal health across borders is important now more than ever,? Clifford said. ?The prevalence of animal disease in one country could easily transpose to another.?
