Pertussis outbreak announced at Davis County school

BOUNTIFUL ? Parents of students at Viewmont High School were notified Monday of a pertussis outbreak at the school.

The Davis County Health Department reported three confirmed, one probable and two possible cases of whooping cough at the school...

...A total of 224 cases have been reported in 2013, while 364 cases had been reported by this time in 2012, according to the Utah Department of Health Bureau of Epidemiology. The majority of cases are in young children, but cases have been reported in all age groups in Utah.

Davis, Salt Lake and Utah counties have the highest incidences of the illness, according to the health department.

Whooping cough cases continue to rise in Utah

OGDEN -- So far this year, 872 cases of whooping cough have been reported to the Utah Department of Health. This week alone, there have been 24 cases.

The disease, also known as pertussis, is preventable through vaccination but with school is in full session, it's starting to crop up in some classrooms.

"We have seen cases of whooping cough in a few schools but Weber and Morgan counties have not had any pertussis outbreaks in the school so far this year," said Amy Carter, communicable disease and epidemiology director and registered nurse at the Weber-Morgan Health Department. "We do know that pertussis is circulating throughout the state. In 2012 and 2013 we have had a large increase of pertussis, partially due to the nature of the infection and how people's immunity with this bacterial infection works."

In Davis County, there have been 89 cases of pertussis reported this year. Forty-eight percent were school aged children and adolescents, said Davis County Health Department public relations director, Bob Ballew...
