Virginia health officials have confirmed outbreaks of norovirus caused by the new Sydney strain that is spreading rapidly across the United States.

Since Oct. 1, the Virginia Department of Health has received reports of 62 norovirus outbreaks, mostly in long-term care facilities, day-care centers and schools, said Dr. David Trump, state epidemiologist.
Of the outbreaks, 27 have been laboratory confirmed as caused by norovirus, and of those, six have been the new Sydney strain named for Sydney, Australia, where it was first identified in March 2012.
?It?s in every single region of the state,? Trump said. ?It?s not being limited to one area.
