    Whooping cough cases soar

    MORE than 200 people have fallen ill with whooping cough in Scotland since the start of the year ? 10 times the number infected last January.

    The outbreak started in 2012 and GPs have alerted officials to a total of 2241 cases in the past 13 months.

    In the whole of 2011 just 85 people were reported to have the illness and the current surge has been described as the worst for at least 20 years...

    The number of people catching whooping cough continues to fall in England and Wales, official figures show.

    There were nearly 10,000 cases in 2012 during the largest outbreak of the diseases in decades.

    The Health Protection Agency said there were 668 cases in January, down from 835 the month before.

    It said the number of monthly infections was still "unusually high", but was less than half the number of cases reported at the outbreak's peak...

      GPs told they must give whooping cough jabs

      THE Scottish Government has intervened in a row between GPs and midwives about who should give pregnant women the whooping cough vaccine, saying family doctors should do the job.

      Midwives have been reluctant to administer the injection at antenatal appointments, amid worries about the increased workload and how this will impact on other support they provide for patients.

      GPs have raised concerns that this means an opportunity to vaccinate expectant mothers is lost, warning some women may not keep separate appointments to get the injection...

        Whooping cough outbreak not slowing in Sussex

        An outbreak of whooping cough cases across Sussex is showing no sign of slowing.

        There have been 71 confirmed cases of the disease in the county since January, which is already higher than the 42 reported over the same period last year...

          Latest figures reveal there have been 136 cases of the disease so far this year compared to 71 four weeks earlier...
