WASHINGTON | Fri May 17, 2013 7:33pm EDT

(Reuters) -...
PEDV, an incurable condition that causes diarrhea, vomiting and dehydration in hogs, has been identified in Iowa, the largest producing state, and possibly beyond. The severity of the outbreak is not yet known.

The virus exists in much of the world but has not previously occurred in the western hemisphere.

The USDA's National Veterinary Services Laboratories has detected the virus in the Iowa hog population, a Department of Agriculture spokesman said.

Cindy Cunningham, spokeswoman for the National Pork Board in Des Moines, Iowa, said: "It may be a little bit more widespread than just with Iowa at this point ... we're still trying to understand that and determine where it all is."
...
PEDV has been seen in England, much of Europe, China, Taiwan and South Korea, according to Iowa State University.

"We don't know the orientation of this particular disease (PEDV) and how it first got here to the United States," Cunningham said.

(Reuters) - Farms in two of the nation's leading pork producing states have tested positive for the potentially fatal porcine epidemic diarrhea virus (PEDV), U.S. pork industry veterinarian official said Monday.

Three farms in Iowa and one Indiana operation have confirmed cases of the virus, said Dr Lisa Becton, director of swine health information and research for the National Pork Board. The cases in Iowa were located on farms "all across the state, not in one specific area," Becton said...

Recently, an outbreak of Porcine Epidemic Diarrhea (PED) has been reported in several states including Minnesota, Iowa, Colorado and Indiana. This is a new virus to the United States so it is expected that there is no immunity to any swine herd. PED has been found in swine herds in Europe and Asia starting in the early 1980s...

Porcine Epidemic Diarrhea (PED) outbreak investigation in the United States

The United States (US) is currently experiencing an outbreak of Porcine Epidemic Diarrhea (PED), a viral disease that affects pigs. This is the first time the disease has been identified in North America and has been found in several states. The investigation is ongoing and at this time the possible source of the disease has not been identified.

The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) is committed to protecting human and animal health and is in contact with the US Department of Agriculture about the situation in the US.

PED does not pose a human health or a food safety risk. The disease is known as a production limiting disease and is associated with diarrhea and vomiting in pigs. It can cause significant disease and death in younger pigs in herds that have not previously been exposed to the virus. PED is not a reportable or immediately notifiable disease in Canada.

The CFIA maintains strict import controls to limit the potential risks to Canadian livestock from disease outbreaks in other countries. The virus is generally transmitted from an infected pig to another or through the movement of equipment or other things contaminated with the virus.

Producers are encouraged to strengthen their biosecurity measures on farm and should consult their veterinarian if their animals are exhibiting signs of illness.

University of Minnesota experts work to stem spread of fatal pig virus

Posted: Tuesday, June 4, 2013 10:00 am

MINNEAPOLIS/ST. PAUL (June 3, 2013) ? A team of University of Minnesota experts in the College of Veterinary Medicine are among those leading efforts to prevent further spread of the recently confirmed outbreak of porcine epidemic diarrhea virus (PEDV) in Minnesota, Colorado, Indiana, Iowa and Illinois. The University of Minnesota is helping producers and veterinarians test herds and determine the origin and rate of the swine virus? spread.

PEDV poses no risk to other animal or human health and no risk to food safety. Should the virus, previously unseen in the United States, become widespread, the pork industry could suffer significant losses. In transoceanic cases of PEDV, around 50 to 60 percent of young swine at newly affected farms perished.

The state of Minnesota ranks third nationwide in pork production. Corn Belt states including Iowa, Minnesota, Indiana and Illinois harbor a majority of the United States? hog and pig population.

(Reuters) - A swine virus deadly to young pigs, one never before seen in North America, is spreading rapidly across the United States and proving harder to control than previously believed.

The virus now has spread to 13 states - with more than 100 positive cases to date - since it was first diagnosed in the United States last month, said Montserrat Torremorell, the Allen D. Leman Chair in Swine Health and Productivity at the University of Minnesota's College of Veterinary Medicine....

DENVER -- Pork prices may be on the rise in the next few months because of a new virus that has migrated to the U.S., killing piglets in 15 states at an alarming rate in facilities where it has been reported.

Dr. Nick Striegel, assistant state veterinarian for the Colorado Department of Agriculture, said Wednesday the Porcine Epidemic Diarrhea Virus, also known as PED, was thought to exist only in Europe and China, but Colorado and 14 other states began reporting the virus in April, and officials confirmed its presence in May. The virus causes severe diarrhea, vomiting and severe dehydration in pigs, and can be fatal...

Porcine epidemic diarrhea virus (PEDV) continues to spread across the country throughout 16 states. Herd loss may affect pork production as countless pigs?most suckling and early-weaned pigs?die from the gastrointestinal disease. Since the identification of the virus was confirmed in the United States May 17, 331 cases have been reported.

A report prepared by the U.S. Department of Agriculture Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (USDA-APHIS), National Veterinary Service Laboratories and the National Animal Health Laboratories Network indicates a jump in positive tests between the week of May 13?with 10 cases contained to Iowa, Minnesota and Colorado?to 44 cases the week of May 20. The virus seemed to spread significantly in Iowa, increasing from four cases to 25. The virus also spread to Missouri and Oklahoma...

Hog Producers Battling to Contain Virus That Has Killed Piglets by the Thousands

ANNAWAN, Ill. ? The outside world is not allowed in a sanitized and isolated pig farm here, not far from the Iowa border.

Visitors must shower before entering, scrubbing from head to toe, trading their street clothes for disinfected coveralls that have never left the premises. Everything inside the temperature-controlled barn housing 3,000 sows has been blasted with antiseptic.

?We do a better job than some hospitals,? said Dr. Matt Ackerman, a veterinarian who works with the farm.

Strict protocols have kept the operation, one of 10 swine facilities run by Great Plains Management, safe from a virus spreading across the country this summer, killing piglets by the thousands and distressing hog producers in 16 states...

PED Update and Biosecurity Suggestions

Porcine epidemic diarrhea virus (PEDV) didn?t just spontaneously evolve in Midwest swine herds. It was introduced into the U.S. from somewhere. So, where did it come from? That is the question to which everyone is seeking an answer. AASV, in collaboration with Pork Board, NPPC and USDA, has developed a survey to examine the epidemiology of the recent introduction of PEDV. The objective of the survey is to determine how the virus entered the U.S. swine herd. The survey will be distributed this week to members having experience with PED positive herds.

What we know is that it appeared in multiple, widely distributed sow herds within days. That would imply a common point-source origin utilized with some frequency across the industry. PEDV is currently most active in Asia, and the virus identified in the US is 99.4% homologous to a virus strain isolated in China in 2012....

Oklahoma winds may spread deadly swine virus

TEXHOMA, OKLAHOMA/CHICAGO (Reuters) - On the windswept prairies of the Oklahoma Panhandle, the hog barns of Prestage Farms are lined up like military barracks. The 20,000-sow operation near the Texas border stands at the front lines of a months-long battle to contain a virus that has already killed some 1.3 million hogs in the United States.

Since June, when Porcine Epidemic Diarrhea virus, or PEDv, first hit, Prestage workers have quarantined the area, scrubbed vehicles and sprayed buildings with antiseptic. But those precautions have not stopped a virus that can kill 80 percent of piglets that contract it.

"In the blink of an eye, 30,000 pigs were dead," said John Prestage, senior vice president at Prestage, describing the first wave of devastation the virus brought to its Oklahoma operation, which raises and sells 400,000 hogs a year.

The outbreak is spreading. And researchers have discovered evidence that the virus - which poses no threat to humans - can be carried on the wind, potentially bringing a dangerous new dimension to the swine epidemic...

?For some of these farmers, it?s a death blow,? said Rodney Baker, a veterinarian at Iowa State University who heads the Iowa Pork Industry Center.

But the approaching winter is troubling, as this type of virus tends to thrive in cold, wet environments.

?That?s our big concern, we?ve got the message out, but what?s going?s to happen this winter and will it affect our markets next year,? Baker said. ?Most of us think it will.?

Nationwide, the total number of pigs lost has been estimated anywhere from 1.2 million to 2 million, he said, but that?s based on computer-generated models and speculation, leaving the exact mortality rate unclear.

?We really just don?t know,? Baker said.
