    SITUATION UPDATE

    19/06/2014 As of 19 June 2014, no human cases of West Nile fever have been reported in the EU and two cases have been reported in neighbouring countries since the beginning of the 2014 transmission season.


    During the past week, Bosnia and Herzegovina reported its first cases of the year from Republika Srpska, in the municipalities of Banja Luka and Trebinje. Both cases were WNV IgM positive.

    SITUATION UPDATE

    26/06/2014 As of 26 June 2014, no human cases of West Nile fever have been reported in the EU and six cases have been reported in neighbouring countries since the beginning of the 2014 transmission season.

    During the past week, Bosnia and Herzegovina reported four new cases of West Nile fever from Republika Srpska, in the newly affected municipalities of Bosanski Novi, kljuc, Mrkonjic Grad and Teslic. All cases were WNV IgM positive.

      As of 3 July 2014, no human cases of West Nile fever have been reported in the EU and six cases have been reported in neighbouring countries since the beginning of the 2014 transmission season.

        10/07/2014 As of 10 July 2014, no human cases of West Nile fever have been reported in the EU and six cases have been reported in neighbouring countries since the beginning of the 2014 transmission season.


        During the past week, EU Member States and neighbouring countries have not reported any new case of West Nile fever in humans.

        In addition, information on recent infection of West Nile in equids in Greece (Serres prefecture) is available from the OIE.

          SITUATION UPDATE

          17/07/2014 As of 17 July 2014, no human cases of West Nile fever have been reported in the EU and 17 cases have been reported in neighbouring countries since the beginning of the 2014 transmission season.

          During the past week, Bosnia and Herzegovina reported six new autochthonous cases of West Nile fever from Republika Srpska, two in the newly affected municipalities of Laktasi and Prijedor and four in municipalities with previous case reports (Banja Luka, 3, and Bosanski Novi, 1). For a seventh case, the status of imported or autochthonous case is still under investigation. All these cases are probable cases.

          Russia reported its first WNF case for the current transmission season from Belgorodskaya, an oblast. This oblast was affected in 2012 (5 cases) and 2013 (2 cases).

          Serbia reported its first three cases for the current transmission season, one confirmed case from Juzno-backi district and two probable cases from Grad Beograd and the Nisavski district.

            24/07/2014 As of 24 July 2014, no human cases of West Nile fever have been reported in the EU and 17 cases have been reported in neighbouring countries since the beginning of the 2014 transmission season.

            During the past week, EU Member States and neighbouring countries have not reported any new case of West Nile fever in humans.

            In addition, information on recent infection of West Nile virus in birds and/or mosquitoes in Italy (Parma, Brescia and Catania provinces), is available in the Bollettino epidemiologico WND.

              SITUATION UPDATE

              31/07/2014 As of 31 July 2014, no human cases of West Nile fever have been reported in the EU and 25 cases have been reported in neighbouring countries since the beginning of the 2014 transmission season.

              During the past week, Russia reported six WNF cases for the current transmission season from Samarskaya an oblast.

              Serbia reported two new cases, one confirmed case from Grad Beograd and one probable case from Juzno-backi district, two areas with previous case reports.

              More details about the cases and information about West Nile virus detection in vectors are available from the Institute of Public Health of Serbia.

              In addition, information on recent infection of West Nile in equids in Croatia (Osjecko-baranjska county) is available from the OIE.

                7/08/2014 As of 7 August 2014, no human cases of West Nile fever (WNF) have been reported in the EU and 25 cases (probable and confirmed) have been reported in neighbouring countries since the beginning of the 2014 transmission season as follow:

                - Russia reported seven WNF cases for the current transmission season from Samarskaya and Belgorodskaya oblasts;

                - Serbia reported five cases from Grad Beograd, Juzno-backi district and Nisavski districts;

                - 13 cases in Bosnia and Herzegovina from Republika Srpska area.

                  SITUATION UPDATE
                  14/08/2014 This week, the Greek Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (KEELPNO) confirmed the first case of West Nile virus for the transmission period 2014. The incident relates to an 85-year-old man, resident of East Attica, with no recent travel history.

                  The Ministry of Health of Israel published a report of cases that occurred in 2014, with two locally acquired cases diagnosed in July, at the start of the transmission period.

                  No new cases were reported from Russia, Serbia or Bosnia and Herzegovina.

                  As of 14 August 2014, 28 human cases of West Nile fever have been reported since the beginning of the 2014 transmission season:

                  - 1 confirmed in the EU by Greece, in East Attica (Attiki);

                  - 27 (probable and confirmed) in neighbouring countries as follows:

                  • 7 in Russia, from Samarskaya and Belgorodskaya oblasts;
                  • 5 in Serbia, from Grad Beograd, Juzno-backi district and Nisavski districts;
                  • 13 in Bosnia and Herzegovina from Republika Srpska area;
                  • 2 in Israel from Netanya (Central District) and Tel Aviv.

                    SITUATION UPDATE

                    22/08/2014 This week, a West Nile infection was notified by Austria, which has been detected through blood donation screening in Vienna. The person had not travelled abroad since several months; she later developed symptoms and a serological reaction.

                    Two new cases were reported from Greece of which one from Ileia (probable), a newly affected area for 2014. No new cases were reported from Israel, Russia, Serbia or Bosnia and Herzegovina.

                    As of 22 August 2014, 30 human cases of West Nile fever have been reported since the beginning of the 2014 transmission season:

                    3 in the EU (probable and confirmed) as follows:

                    by Austria: 1 confirmed in Vienna (Wien);

                    by Greece: 2 confirmed in East Attica (Attiki) and one probable in Ileia;


                    27 (probable and confirmed) in neighbouring countries as follows:

                    7 in Russia, from Samarskaya and Belgorodskaya oblasts;

                    5 in Serbia, from Grad Beograd, Juzno-backi district and Nisavski districts;

                    13 in Bosnia and Herzegovina from Republika Srpska area;

                    2 in Israel from Netanya (Central District) and Tel Aviv.

                      SITUATION UPDATE

                      28/08/2014 As of 28 August 2014, 10 human cases of West Nile fever have been reported in the EU and 36 cases have been reported in neighbouring countries since the beginning of the 2014 transmission season.

                      During the past week, Greece reported three new probable cases:

                      one from the already affected prefecture of Ileia;
                      two from the newly affected prefecture of Rodopi.

                      Italy reported its first case for the current transmission season. This is a confirmed case detected in Pavia province (Lombardy region).
                      In addition, information on recent infection of West Nile virus in birds and/or mosquitoes in Italy (Emilia-Romagna, Lombardy, Sicily and Veneto regions), is available in the Bollettino epidemiologico WND.

                      Romania reported its first two cases for the current transmission season:

                      one confirmed case probably infected in Constanta district;
                      one confirmed case from Olt district.

                      In neighbouring countries, Serbia reported nine new cases:

                      six from an already affected area, Grad Beograd (3 probable and 3 confirmed cases);
                      three from two newly affected districts: Kolubarski (1 probable case) and Sremski (2 confirmed cases).

                        SITUATION UPDATE

                        04/09/2014 As of 4 September 2014, 20 human cases of West Nile fever have been reported in the EU and 48 cases have been reported in neighbouring countries since the beginning of the 2014 transmission season.

                        During the past week, Greece reported five new cases:

                        four from the already affected prefecture of Rodopi (probable 2, confirmed 2);
                        one from the newly affected prefecture of Xanthi (probable).

                        Hungary reported its first two cases for the current transmission season. Both of them are confirmed cases detected in Csongrad county.

                        Romania reported three new cases from two newly affected districts:
                        two from Mures (probable 1, confirmed 1);
                        one from Ialomita (confirmed).

                        In neighbouring countries, Serbia reported 12 new cases:

                        seven from already affected areas (Grad Beograd 5, Juzno-backi 1, Sremski 1);

                        five from two newly affected districts: three from Juzno-banatski (confirmed 1, probable 2) and two from Podunavski (both confirmed).

                          SITUATION UPDATE

                          11/09/2014 As of 11 September 2014, 37 human cases of West Nile fever have been reported in the EU and 77 cases have been reported in neighbouring countries since the beginning of the 2014 transmission season.

                          During the past week:

                          Greece reported two new probable cases from the already affected prefecture of Rodopi.

                          Italy reported seven new confirmed cases from six newly affected provinces, Bologna (2), Cremona, Ferrara, Modena, Reggio nell?Emilia and Verona. In addition, information on recent infection of West Nile in equids, birds, and vectors in Italy is available in the Bollettino epidemiologico WND.

                          Romania reported eight new confirmed cases:
                          one from the already affected district of Olt;
                          seven from six newly affected districts, Bucuresti, Dambovita, Dolj (2), Galati, Giurgiu and Teleorman.

                          In addition, the Andalusia Ministry of Agriculture in Spain detected on 3 September one horse with West Nile encephalitis in the province of Seville.

                          In neighbouring countries:

                          Russia reported 17 new cases from five newly affected oblasts, Altayskiy Kray (1), Astrakhanskaya (3), Chelyabinskaya (1), Saratovskaya (9) and Volgogradskaya (3).

                          Serbia reported 12 new cases:
                          11 from already affected areas (Grad Beograd 5, Juzno-banatski 3, Kolubarski 1, Podunasvski 1, Sremski 1);
                          one probable case from the newly affected district of Raski.

                            Greece reported two new probable cases from the already affected prefecture of Xanthi.

                            Italy reported one new confirmed case from the newly affected province of Parma.

                            Romania reported two new confirmed cases from two already affected districts, Olt and Teleorman.

                            In neighbouring countries:

                              ECDC - Reported cases of West Nile Fever for the EU and neighbouring countries - 2014

                              SITUATION UPDATE

                              25/09/2014 As of 25 September 2014, 55 human cases of West Nile fever have been reported in the EU and 102 cases have been reported in neighbouring countries since the beginning of the 2014 transmission season.

                              During the past week:

                              Hungary reported six new cases from five newly affected areas:

                              - Budapest: two probable cases;
                              - Bekes county: one probable case;
                              - Hajdu-Bihar county: one probable case;
                              - Jasz-Nagykun-Szolnok county: one confirmed case;
                              - Pest county: one probable case.


                              Italy reported five new confirmed cases:

                              - four from two already affected provinces, Bologna (3) and Pavia (1)
                              - one from the newly affected province of Mantova.

                              Romania reported two new confirmed cases:

                              - one from the already affected district of Olt
                              - one from the newly affected district of Sibiu.

                              In addition, the Andalusia Ministry of Agriculture in Spain detected on 11 September one horse with West Nile encephalitis in the province of Huelva.

                              In neighbouring countries:

                              - Russia reported one new case from Volgogradskaya, an oblast with previous case reports.

                              - Serbia reported seven new cases from already affected areas (Grad Beograd 4, Juzno-backi 2, Juzno-banatski 1).

                              Bosnia and Herzegovina - Number of cases: 13 - Date of first case's report : 13/06/2014

                              Russian Federation - Number of cases: 29- Date of first case's report: 16/07/2014

                              Serbia - Number of cases:58 - Date of first case's report: 17/07/2014

                              Israel - Number of cases: 2 - Date of first case's report : 11/07/2014
