So what happens when the pandemic hits and you’ve prepared by storing food and water, only to experience people banging on the door pleading for food/water? What if they are neighbors or friends? This scenario is an excellent incentive to proactively alert them beforehand to the risks and their mitigations. The food mitigations can be less expensive than ordinary day to day grocery costs, so that helps to reduce concern over preparation expense. If there are those that still aren’t proactive after being alerted, we will have onhand some food bars from the Red Cross that last 3 days, and will give those out (1 or 2) to each family until we run out. Your best local protection is helping the community both proactively and reactively.


What if the worst case scenario unfolds where a severe pandemic rages through the country in several waves that last months each, and our governments, foodstores, hospitals, etc are not properly prepared? What if then thugs and gangs from a crime-ridden city center have spread out going house to house looking for food (or worse)?


Attitude is crucially important: it is better to stay low and avoid trouble than to fall into the trap of becoming a trigger-happy hero wannabe. You might even want to give your place the appearance of being uninhabited after a couple of weeks of a prolonged pandemic wave .


If active self-defense measures are to be considered also, there are a variety of solutions, some of which include:

• Pepperspray
• Bat
• Guard dog
• Firearm

The first three might be effective against single unarmed intruders, if employed correctly. One protection device that could be effective against other attacks is the firearm. Many people are opposed to such defensive measures on principle. Some will have no choice, as they are prevented from owning one by state and local regulations.



For the rest, if a firearm is to be considered, some difficult questions would need to be answered:

• Can you store/handle it safely to prevent an accident, or misuse? What do you believe safe storage to be? Misuse can include getting really mad at someone and brandishing (or discharging) it.
• Are you willing to take a gun safety course?
• Would you really be able to pull the trigger to defend yourself and family if the situation actually arose? If you could not bring yourself to use the firearm in a self defense situation, an attacker could take the weapon and use it against your and your family.
• Is there a facility nearby where you can afford to practice shooting on a regular basis?

If you hesitate to answer YES to any of the above, then a firearm likely is not for you.

If you decide to consider a firearm, enroll in a gun safety course first.



If you make the decision after that to purchase a firearm, make sure you are comfortable with the one(s) you are considering, and plan to spend time at a nearby shooting range to become proficient.



Study and memorize the legal limitations/uses of any firearm you consider before you buy.



Remember that you will always be held accountable for the eventual stopping point of any bullet you fire, which means you will be prosecuted if it was an illegal act.
