7 THOUSAND-CASES OF DHF IN EAST JAKARTA

Jakarta, 2/7/2007 (Komimfo-Newsroom)?The District Health Office of East Jakarta recorded, until Friday (29/7), that Dengue Hemorrhagic Fever (DHF) in East Jakarta are as many as 7,078 cases the three of them are dead.

In the effort of driving down the Aedes Aegepty larvae, the Mayor of East Jakarta District visited DHF patients socializing the Mosquito Nest Eradication Program (PSN).
During his visit to the Budhi Asih hospital and the Hospital for pilgrims in East Jakarta on Friday (29/6), Mayor of East Java Kosnan again explained that PSN is the best way to prevent the larvae breeding.

?Fogging is only 40 percent effective in killing the mosquito, and the other 60 percent are public participation via the PSN,? he said.

On the occasion, Koesnan distributed the poster urging people to participate in the PSN. ?Put on this poster in the neighborhood to make people aware of DHF and understand what the PSN is all about,? he instructed.

Koesnan acknowledged most of the victims in his area are due to the people?s ignoring the importance of PSN besides its bad practices.

?Focus the PSN on three: bath tank, used cans and things that make puddles of water,? he said.

Meanwhile, on the same occasion, Head of the District Health Office of East Jakarta said although the cases are more than that of the previous year; however case per week is decreasing.

?However, the PSN must continuo since the rain still takes place,? he said.

Until today, there have been 67 victims of DHF treated in the Budhi Asih hospital; most of them are the East Jakarta residents. While the victims treated in the Hospital for Pilgrims in Pondok Gede are as much as 12 people, four of them are the East Jakarta residents. (T.Tr/id/c/kho)

Agency downgrades dengue fever status after no deaths reported

          The Jakarta Post, Jakarta

The Jakarta administration has officially downgraded the city's dengue fever status from "extraordinary occurrence" to "alert", Governor Sutiyoso said Friday.

Sutiyoso said the Jakarta Health Agency made the change after the number of reported cases of dengue fever decreased steadily over the last six weeks in the capital.

"The city health agency informed me Thursday it had officially downgraded the dengue fever status," he told reporters at City Hall.

There have been no fatalities from 189 cases recorded so far this month.

The 23,894 dengue fever cases recorded in the capital since the start of this year by the agency seems likely to overtake the 24,932 cases recorded in 2006.

Sutiyoso said despite downgrading the dengue fever status, the administration will continue to press on with its fumigation efforts.

"We will still carry out the fumigation process according to schedule on Fridays throughout the city," he said.

At the moment, over 2,400 fumigators work in 135 dengue fever "red zone" neighborhoods and another 127 dengue prone-areas across the city.

As part of its effort to fight dengue fever, the administration is also drafting a regulation on the containment of dengue fever based on a similar regulation in neighboring Singapore.

According to the regulation draft, people found to have mosquito larvae on their property risk a jail term of up to three months and a Rp 50 million (US$5,500) fine.
