Malda, September 6, 2012: After viral fever and dengue, Malda has now recorded encephalitis. With the mother of a district Trinamul Congress leader falling into encephalitis, health administration has naturally taken this seriously. Meanwhile, fever claimed another life in hospital today when the concerned civic body has held a workshop to battle dengue. The doctors of the hospital were cancelled their leaves to take on the rising number of fever patients. It has been learnt from a senior officer of district health administrations that 28 patients suffering from fever are being suspected with dengue.

Puden Soren (42) of Old Malda died today suffering from fever. His family claimed that for last 4-5 dasy Puden was suffering from fever and when the temperature was abnormally high this morning, Puden was taken to Malda Medical College and Hospital around 10 am today. But at 11.30 am he succumbed to his fever. Though private sources claimed him to be the second victim of Dengue in the district, hospital authorities rubbished the speculation.

In view of the large number of dengue cases in the country, the National Institute of Virology (NIV) is studying, for the first time, the disease burden to assess its economic impact on the government and individuals. It will kickstart with a pilot study at two sites in and around Pune, before it is expanded to cover other areas of the country.
Till August this year, 11,465 cases have been reported in the country and 83 deaths were reported including 18 in Karnataka, 39 in Tamil Nadu, nine in Kerala and six in Maharashtra. Recent deaths were reported in West Bengal where Dengue-3 and Dengue-4 strains have been co-circulating.

Five dengue-like-fever deaths occurred in Jalgaon in Maharashtra and three samples tested positive, NIV officials said.

KOLKATA: Mosquito larvae were found at the Rajabazar Science College campus on Friday, confirming fears that the Calcutta University-affiliated institute has turned into a dengue breeding ground. A Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) team inspected the campus and found larvae in a broken basin and some apparatus inside the chemistry laboratory, in an AC machine, in clogged drains and a gully pit. Larvae were also discovered in other laboratory apparatus, sending shockwaves among teachers and research scholars, many of whom spend close to 10 hours at the chemistry laboratory.

The KMC has asked the college to clean up the campus within a week, failing which action would be taken. A research scholar and a teacher of the college died of dengue this week.

Dengue has made a comeback in the Capital, though with a much milder strain. The combined data from three Municipal Corporation's of Delhi (MCD), which maintains data of all vector-borne diseases, says that only 11 positive cases were registered this year. Even private hospitals, usually flooded with dengue and malaria cases around this time of the year, have not seen many hospitalisations so far.
Prominent private hospitals in the city have reported more than 150 cases of dengue since January this year. "The numbers are not very high this year. I have not seen more than one or two cases in a month and even those are of very mild strain," said SP Byotra, chairman, department of medicine, Sir Ganga Ram Hospital.

The MCD defended its low count. "We do not count cases outside Delhi. Private hospitals often get cases from the NCR, which technically are not Delhi cases," said NK Yadav, health officer, department of public health, MCD.
