    Encephalitis outbreak in upper Assam, 34 die

    DIBRUGARH: Health authorities in Assam have sounded an alert following the recent death of 34 people owing to Japanese Encephalitis (JE) and Acute Encephalitis Syndrome ( AES) in Dibrugarh and Sivasagar districts.

    "In Dibrugarh, seven persons have died of Acute Encephalities Syndrome and 13 others are suffering from the disease. Though no one has died of Japanese Encephalitis so far, five persons from Barbaruah and Nahoroni have tested positive. They are at present undergoing treatment at the Assam Medical College and Hospital," joint director of health (Dibrugarh) DN Bangthai said on Friday

      JAPANESE ENCEPHALITIS BPHC: DHAKUAKHNA BPHC SUB CENTRE: CHARANCHUK SC AFFECTED VILLAGE: BAHIR BOGORI 1 0 11/06/2012 2012-06-29 16:24:38 862 On 1962012, Sri Pradip Giri ,Age: 26 Yrs of Vill- Bahir Bogori, P.o- Bakulguri, Dhakuakhana was suffering from high Fever, unconsciousness and neck rigidity at his own home. He was then taken to Dhakuakhana BPHC on 1962012 for treatment. Dr. Chandan Deori, M&HO-1, Dhakuakhana BPHC attended him at 2 PM and suspected the case as AES and immediately referred him to North Lakhimpur Civil Hospital on the same day. But the patients was admitted at DM Hospital, Lakhimpur at 5.06 PM on 1962012. After observing the patient , Dr. U.N.Dutta of DM Hospital also suspected the case as AES and referred him to GMCH on 2062012. Now the patient is admitted in GMCH and he is improving. The Age Group of the patient is: 1. 21 yrs-------- 30 yrs: 1 no. Serum and CSF samples were collected by GMCH and Results JE ve. 1. The Ic Dhakuakhana BPHC was informed and requested to take containment measures in the affected area on 2762012. 2. On 2862012, a medical team was deployed , awareness camp were done by the Ic Dhakuakhana BPHC himself and about 100 Blood slides have been collected from some persons of the affected area for Microscopic examination. Also reported that no further lying down cases are found in that area. 3. The District Malaria Officer (DMO),Lakhimpur was informed and requested to take preventive measures regarding JE cases. Investigation Open The Patient is improving.

          New Delhi: The World Health Organisation Friday said it was ready to provide all assistance to encephalitis-hit Bihar.

          Talking to reporters here, WHO India representative Nata Menabde said that while WHO was ready to provide all assistance for establishing what the virus was, it had not been approached by the government yet.

          "We don`t have any specific project at present, but we are open to providing assistance whenever the government approaches us. We have all the expertise," Menabde told reporters.

          Bihar fever toll 238, NIV rules out JE

          Guwahati, June 30 : The death toll from Japanese Encephalitis rose to eleven in Assam with four more people succumbing to the disease on Friday, said health officials on Saturday.


          The total number of Japanese Encephalitis cases has touched 50.

          According to reports, the total number of Acute Encephalitis Syndrome (AES) cases have touched 332 while the death toll has reached 47.

              Assuming a single infectious etiology, the following are suggested as

              althernative diagnoses which might not be included in routine testing:

              Nipah virus infection

              Kyasanur Forest disease

              Chandipura

              West Nile fever



              Gideon also lists two additional regional diseases which have not been

              reported in India to date:

              Tick-borne encephalitis (? milk-borne)

              Banna virus infection

              [It would be of interest to know if the Indian National Institute of Virology tested for any of the above pathogens when they processed cerebral spinal fluid and blood samples of the 73 patients from Muzaffarpur district. Interestingly, the Gideon search does not list enteroviruses. Many of the reports from Bihar and Uttar Pradesh states associate the encephalitis cases with polluted water, suggesting enterovirus etiologies.                 Muzaffarpur, Hpr: seasonal fluctuation between the continuing scourge of meningitis. Skemsiac on Saturday suffering from meningitis treatment had three children. Ramdev Singh resident of village Meenapur station Hazrtpur three-year-old Aditya Kumar, Deoria police station to face 25-year-old daughter Preeti Kumari Dharfri village Shambhu and iron station 6-year-old son of Shah Sahpur village Ram Kumar Govind Kumar. However, dissatisfied with the system Skemsiac Govind's family shortly after beginning treatment with him went elsewhere.

                So far, patient recruitment: Skemsiac suffering from meningitis in the past one month, 217 children were admitted.

                Death so far:

                - According to documents Skemsiac 76 patients died during treatment.

                How many patients in treatment:

                - Skemsiac Piaisiu of 17 and 18 children are admitted to the ward. He is being treated.

                How many patients were healthy:

                - Skemsiac in 85 patients during treatment is said to be healthy. However, 18 patients went without consultation.

                  Assam is in deep grip of the killer Japanese Encephalitis where the toll has gone up to 20. That too in Sivasagar district alone. Over 100 people from the district have been under going treatment in the various hospital. According to reports, cases of Acute Encephalitis Syndrome are on the rise. The number has shot up to 332 till Saturday. The death toll has touched 50.

                    Even as a worried Uttar Pradesh government is combating the outbreak of encephalitis that has claimed 117 lives in the last one month in the eastern part of the state, the Gorakhpur administration is toying with homeopathy and fish to take on the killer disease.

                    According to highly-placed sources, a 'hate-ke' (different) proposal came from the divisional commissioner of Gorakhpur Ravindra Naik, who has sent in a detailed proposal, pitching for introduction of homeopathic treatments in Acute Encephalitis Syndrome (AES, saying that once cleared by the health department, the initiative could be taken up in a phased manner.

Most of the cases coming from the rural areas where the unhygenic residential atmosphere. About 25 cases reported till date today Age group are: 0 - 5 yrs 5 nos, 6 - 15 yrs 11 nos, 16 - 30 yrs 4 nos, 31 - 50 yrs 2 nos, 51 & above 3 nos 1. 19 nos of sample collected for JE confirmation (MaC ELISA) test and sent to District Priority Laboratory, Golaghat Result: Awaited 2. 5 nos of samples tested for JE in the JMCH, Jorhat Result: Negative for JE 1. Fever survey house to house by the ASHA & SW Workers. 2. Mass Blood Slide collected and tested for malaria. 3. DDT sprayed in the affected areas. 4. All the para medical staffs engaged to affected areas for IEC. 5. Local PHC engaged for closed observation of the situation and immediate response. 6. RRT team visited the area and examine the situation. Investigation Open One or two suspected AES cases admitted in the KK Civil hospital in every week.

                            Patna, July 2 (IANS) Families of hundreds of children who died of acute encephalitis syndrome (AES) in Bihar are yet to be paid compensation announced by the state government last month, an official said Monday.

                            Nearly 20 days after the state announced compensation of Rs.50,000 each from the chief minister?s relief fund to families of children who died of AES, the health department has not finalised payment so far, the official said.

                            He told IANS on condition of anonymity that the compensation issue was yet to move beyond the files.
