    Sting virus back in Sivasagar

    A STAFF REPORTER
Jorhat, July 2: Japanese encephalitis is back to haunt Sivasagar district though Dispur had launched an adult vaccination drive last year to prevent an outbreak.
    ...
Sivasagar additional deputy commissioner (health) Isfaqur Rahman told The Telegraph today that 60 suspected cases of encephalitis have been detected in the district since January and among them, 13 are confirmed cases.

He said 20 deaths because of suspected encephalitis have been reported and among the 20 deaths, nine were confirmed cases while 11 were AES acute encephalitis syndrome (symptoms similar to JE).

Rahman said among the nine encephalitis deaths, two persons were among those vaccinated against Japanese encephalitis late last year. Nearly five lakh adults (above-15 years) of the district were vaccinated against Japanese encephalitis under a pilot project, which the state government had claimed to be the first of its kind in the country.

He said among the eight public health centres of the district, the Geleky centre under Nazira sub-division was the worst hit, reporting six deaths.
