A couple of interestng points to note from Commongrounds post #192

Is it possible the "local citizen suspect" meant that the local suspected an infection and reported it?

Regarding dogs - they probably remember the cat infections of a couple years ago. Wasn't it called something like "aargh-plunk" flu, because the cats would howl just prior to falling from a tree? Also, didn't a Scottish researcher (studying the cats) find that it was a different strain than the one infecting poultry? I wonder if the same is true now - are the mammalian infections different from the poultry?

If I understood the reports well, it went more or less like this: chickens "died suddenly" , tested and found positive for H5N1, near these dead chickens a suspect human case was found.
Probably because people looked for suspect human cases after finding avian flu in chickens. This in turn triggered more culling of poultry.

Some time ago dogs were mentioned in Sulawesi as possible spreaders of H5N1 virus, because they can dig up the burried carcasses of H5N1 contaminated chickens.

About February 18 chickens died in neighborhood. Relatives report fever and symptoms for Nurliga (Nur Liza) two weeks earlier than March 2, when they interviewed. This suggests that onset was some time around February 18. On February 24, 2009, she starts treatment at RS Bhakti Yudha. On February 27, 2009, Nurliga is taken to RS Persahabatan. The next day, February 28, 2009, Nurliga dies. Ten family members test negative that same day.

Dogs also eat the temple offerings in Bali. I don't know if those food offerings include chicken, but if any chicken were contaminated, it would naturally spread to dogs.
