Re: Utah reports 5 deaths in Week 48 - total 42

    Source: http://health.utah.gov/epi/h1n1flu/a...tRep120909.pdf

    Severity:
    • The severity of an influenza outbreak (epidemic or pandemic) is measured by the number of influenza infections that result in hospitalization or death. To date, severity for the 2009 H1N1 Pandemic is comparable to or slightly greater than the severity seen during regular flu seasons. At this time there is no evidence that severity for the 2009 H1N1 Pandemic is changing.
    • A total of 841 influenza-associated hospitalizations (IAHs) (due to both seasonal and 2009 pandemic (H1N1) strains) have been reported to public health this influenza season. This is 34 more than reported last week (last week?s total IAHs was 807). Of the 34 IAHs reported this week, 17 occurred within this last reporting week (11/29/09 to 12/05/09), and 17 occurred prior to that but were not reported to public health until this week. In some instances reporting lag times exist from the time the hospitalization occurs to when it is reported to public health.

    2009 Pandemic A (H1N1) deaths:

(Note: In the Situation Report that was first published and distributed last week (12/02/09) there was an error with the number of reported 2009 H1N1 associated deaths. It was reported initially that there were three deaths associated with the 2009-2010 Influenza Season H1N1 virus, when actually there were only two. One hospitalized case was misreported as a death, when in fact the case was only hospitalized)
    • The severity measure listed above is for influenza caused by all strains (regular seasonal flu and the 2009 Pandemic A (H1N1)). In addition, Utah is collecting data on patient deaths (whether hospitalized or not) known to have been related to the 2009 Pandemic A (H1N1) strain.
    • A total of 24 deaths related to 2009 Pandemic A (H1N1) have been reported to public health this influenza season. This is two more than reported last week. Both of the deaths reported this week occurred within the last reporting week (11/29/09 to 12/05/09). For more information regarding these deaths, please refer to the Local Health District.

    Deaths not previously reported:
    • 1 in Salt Lake Valley Health District - 1 male, age 25-49
    • 1 in Weber-Morgan Health District - 1 female, age 25-49

Re: Utah Reports 4 New Deaths - total 30

Perhaps this article refers to one of the children from post #1

Orem house fire is 2nd major tragedy for family this year
      December 16th, 2009 @ 9:57pm
      By Richard Piatt
OREM -- An Orem family lost everything they had Wednesday afternoon in a devastating house fire. This tragedy follows the recent death of their 9-year-old child who died from complications of the swine flu.

Once it began, the fire at the Kuesters' home near 800 North and 200 East spread quickly. Rick and Jennifer Kuester rushed home quickly, but could only watch the flames and smoke.

The Kuester family "They just had smoke going out everywhere," Jennifer Kuester said.

"[There were] flames coming out of the bedroom window," Rick Kuester added. "They'd come out and knock them down, then they'd start up again."

Fire investigators said an overloaded circuit started the fire. Two sisters, ages 13 and 4, were home at the time. They smelled smoke and ran to family next door.

"I was just shaking like a leaf; just, it was so unreal. I couldn't believe what was happening," said Jennifer Kitchen, the girls' aunt.

The fire was mainly in the master bedroom, which was also where the family's Christmas presents were. That included Jennifer Kuester's hand-crochet blankets: 1 for each child.

"They were in there. They lost the blanket I made for them this year," Jennifer Kuester said.

Adding to the emotion of this tragedy: memories of another Kuester daughter, 9-year-old Samantha, who died from swine flu complications in October.

"On the drive, I was just pounding on the steering wheel asking what more the Lord wanted from me," Jennifer Kuester said.

The family is thankful that they are all safe. The Red Cross is assisting them with emergency supplies. But it's been a rough year for the Kuesters.

"I don't know. I don't feel much of anything, just shock I guess," Rick Kuester said.

"We can just throw 2009 away," Jennifer Kuester said.

The fire department said the home is a complete loss, and the family doesn't have insurance for their possessions. This is all fresh, so they don't have a way to process donations. If we get that information, we'll post it on KSL.com.

Re: Utah reports 1 death in Week 49

        "Circulation:
The indicator used by public health to measure the circulation of influenza
in the community is influenza-like illness (ILI) as reported by sentinel
clinics. (An ILI sentinel clinic is a clinic that reports to public health the
percentage of patient visits seen for influenza-like illnesses).
Influenza is currently circulating at a level that is typical for what is seen
during regular flu seasons, but is slightly higher than what is usually
expected for this time of the year. ILI activity in the Utah has decreased
for the seventh consecutive week, but is still above the statewide
        epidemic threshold of 1.1%.
For the past week (MMWR Week 49), the ILI rate for Utah is 1.6% down
        from 1.8% last week).
This value is above the ILI outbreak threshold of 1.1%.
ILI is down for the seventh consecutive week.
        Severity:
The severity of an influenza outbreak (epidemic or pandemic) is measured
by the number of influenza infections that result in hospitalization or
        death.
Thus far for the 2009-2010 influenza season, the total number of
influenza infections and hospitalizations associated with influenza have
substantially exceeded the total expected for an entire influenza season.
At this time there is no evidence that severity for the 2009 H1N1
Pandemic is changing, meaning that the ratio of infections resulting in
hospitalization or death has been relatively constant since the beginning
        of the Pandemic.
A total of 857 influenza-associated hospitalizations (IAHs) (due to both
seasonal and 2009 pandemic (H1N1) strains) have been reported to public
health this influenza season. This is 16 more than reported last week (last
week?s total IAHs was 841). Of the 16 IAHs reported this week, 9
occurred within this last reporting week (12/06/09 to 12/12/09), and 7
occurred prior to that but were not reported to public health until this
week. In some instances reporting lag times exist from the time the
hospitalization occurs to when it is reported to public health.

        2009 Pandemic A (H1N1) deaths:
The severity measure listed above is for influenza caused by all strains
(regular seasonal flu and the 2009 Pandemic A (H1N1)). In addition, Utah
is collecting data on patient deaths (whether hospitalized or not) known to
have been related to the 2009 Pandemic A (H1N1) strain.
A total of 25 deaths related to 2009 Pandemic A (H1N1) have been
reported to public health this influenza season. This is one more than
reported last week. The death reported this week occurred within the last
reporting week (11/29/09 to 12/05/09). For more information regarding
these deaths, please refer to the Local Health District.
        Deaths not previously reported:

                            Associated Press - February 24, 2010 5:55 PM ET

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) - Utah health officials are reporting one new swine flu-related death in the state.

The total number of H1N1-related deaths is now 28 this flu season.

The latest death was a woman in Tooele County between the ages of 50 and 64. Utah Department of Health officials said Wednesday she died in November but her death was not added to the statewide tally until last week.
