The total number of infections has grown to 61 since the first case was reported in April.
Amsterdam – New swine flu infections were reported in two primary schools in the Netherlands over the weekend.
One of the patients is a seven-year-old girl who fell ill last Thursday. The local health authorities established on Friday that the girl was suffering from the A(H1N1) swine flu virus.
The girl is reported to have contracted the virus from her mother, according to a local television station, AT5. The mother's infection traces back to a colleague.
There is a chance that other children who attend the Amsterdam-area school could be infected. The school has announced it will stay open as usual, but is calling for parents to be on their guard.
A classmate suffering from flu symptoms is being examined, and the results are expected on Monday evening.
Another primary school in the town of Woerden, near Utrecht, confirmed on Sunday that a father who accompanied pupils on a school trip was suffering from swine flu.
The local health authority examined students who had been in close contact with the man, and found that one of them had contracted the virus. The school has asked parents of children who went on the trip to keep the students home from school for a few days.
Currently there are 61 confirmed infections of the A(H1N1) virus. Many more new infections were found last week through the GGD, a municipal health organization. Thirty-three of the cases were contracted in foreign countries, and 28 were infected within the Netherlands, according to RIVM, a public health institute.
One patient is in intensive care. The others have recovered or are currently on medication.
