    PTI 4 September 2009, 09:00pm IST

AHMEDABAD: Swine flu on Friday claimed the life of a 34-year-old woman, who died at a private hospital here, taking the death toll to 10 in the
state, while three fresh cases were reported, a top health official said.

"Today morning, Rasilaben Paldia, who had tested positive for H1N1 virus, died due to cardio respiratory arrest at the Sterling Hospital," the official said.

Rasilaben had complained of cough with pain in chest on August 24, and the very next day she developed breathlessness with difficulty in speaking, they said.

Rasilaben, who had a known case of psychiatric illness, went to Sanjivani Hospital in Surat and was admitted on the same day, health officials said.

Later, she was shifted to Sterling Hospital in Ahmedabad on August 29 with ventilator support and died on Friday morning, they added.

According to the officials, three new cases were reported from the city. So far, 125 people have tested positive, including the 10 deaths in the state.

Out of the three positive patients, two are women -- aged 57 and 27, while third one is a male aged around 24 years, officials said.

Around 23 people confirmed or suspected are admitted in various hospitals of the state, they said.

Swine flu claims 10th victim in Gujarat

      Saturday , Sep 05, 2009 at 0428 hrs Ahmedabad:

The swine flu death toll in Gujarat reached 10 after a woman died at a city hospital on Friday. The state has recorded four H1N1 deaths in the last seven days.

Health department sources said Rasilaben Paldiya (34) died at 10.30 am due to cardio respiratory arrest caused by the H1N1 virus with bilateral pneumonia. ?The patient had developed severe pneumonic patches on the lungs, which resulted into severe sepsis and multi-lung failure,? officials added.

Paldiya was admitted to a private hospital in Ahmedabad on August 29 after complaining of breathlessness, chest pain and difficulty in speaking. Her family members said that Paldiya had visited her native village a week ago, following which she was admitted to the Sanjivani Hospital in Surat on August 24. Doctors said she was suffering from cough and expectoration with chest pain. She was kept on ventilator support for seven days.

The doctors added that the patient also had some psychiatric illness.

As her condition deteriorated, she was shifted to Sterling Hospital in Ahmedabad, where she was given Tamiflu tablet.

The municipal health department has, meanwhile, identified close contacts of the patient and started their treatment.

Earlier this week, Vaishali Kalal, who was seven-month pregnant, died of swine flu. Dinesh Aghera from Ahmedabad became the eighth victim followed by 23-year-old Bhavya Dave.

The swine flu death toll in Gujarat reached 10 after a woman died at a city hospital on Friday. The state has recorded four H1N1 deaths in the last seven days.
"If you could for a moment rise up out of your own beloved skin and appraise ant, human, and virus as equally resourceful beings, you might admire the accord they have all struck in Africa. Back in your skin of course, you'll shriek for a cure. But remember: air travel, roads, cities, prostitution, the congregation of people for efficient commerce - these are gifts of godspeed to the virus"

Swine flu death toll rises, 30-year-old woman dies in city (Ahmedabad)

Swine flu death toll rises, 30-year-old woman dies in city
        TNN 6 September 2009, 01:23am IST

AHMEDABAD: Thirty-year-old Amba Desai, resident of Parshotamnagar Rabarivas in Ghatlodia, died of swine flu on Saturday afternoon creating a panic
        situation in the area.

She is the 11th person in the state to succumb to the H1N1 virus. In last one week two persons have succumbed to the deadly virus in the state. Gujarat is third in the number of swine flu deaths in the country.

Principal health secretary Ravi Saxena said, "This death indicates a shift in the spread of H1N1 virus, as the deceased was the first from a lower income group.
"Generally, the immunity level among the poorer section of society is pretty low which may have aggravated her health conditions," added Saxena.

Desai was admitted at Civil Hospital on September 4 in a critical condition. Earlier, she had visited a local doctor in Ghatlodia with high fever.

After the death, Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) started a health drive and identified six persons in the locality who were in touch with Desai.

A senior AMC official said, "We have started contact treatment for six of the family members and surveying the locality." However AMC authorities are puzzled about her contracting the virus.

Meanwhile, a 27-year-old woman from Silvassa is in a critical state after she developed complications due to swine flu at VS Hospital. Shalini Pandey was admitted to Rajasthan Hospital on Thursday after she complained of cold and severe cough.

Hospital authorities sent her blood sample and throat swabs to Civil Hospital, which tested positive. She was then transferred to VS Hospital. AMC authorities said they have started contact treatment for other three family members who are in touch with the woman. Meanwhile, attending doctors said that the woman was in a critical state.

                  Toll reaches 47 (Gujarat)

Woman dies of swine flu in Surat, toll reaches 15

AHMEDABAD: Seema Rambahadur Gupta, 24, died due to swine flu infection on Wednesday afternoon at New Civil Hospital (NCH), Surat. With Gupta's
death, the number of fatalities has climbed to 15. Gupta, wife of a labourer, was admitted to NCH on Saturday after she complained of sore throat and breathlessness. She was residing near Kim Crossroads in Surat and was taken to a private hospital for preliminary checkup from where she was referred to NCH, informed district health officials.

"Medical report showing her swine flu positive status was declared late on Tuesday evening. She was on medication since her admission in the isolation ward at NCH. Gupta had no history of visiting any areas where the pandemic had been reported from earlier," said Surat district health officer Vijay Kumar Gupta.

In Ahmedabad, two cases tested positive, including a doctor working with Civil Hospital. Meanwhile, the sudden spate of deaths, especially from the lower-income groups has the government machinery concerned that H1N1 virus has now become a localized infection. "It has got embedded in the community and there are strong chances that the infection will surge, making it tough to tackle the virus," said senior officials.

They added that a decision has been taken in a meeting to review the H1N1 deaths to intensify community awareness efforts for preventing transmission as much as possible. "Each garba organizer will be directed to have a stall at the venue with a team of doctors to screen patients and spread awareness. They will be asked to send suspected cases to public hospital OPDs," said a senior official. The screening can be voluntary or visual where a person showing symptoms may be asked to get a checkup done, officials said.
