HYDERABAD: The swine flu outbreak in the State Capital is getting grimmer by the day. In the last 48 hours, two persons have succumbed to H1N1 virus in twin cities and 45 persons have tested positive for swine flu. With Eid festivities set to be held on Monday, the district health authorities have requested general public to be cautious and observe precautions .

The H1N1 victims have been identified as Rekha (30), who died at Yashoda Hospital on Saturday, and Sekhar (27) from Uppal who died at Gandhi Hospital on Sunday. With the two deaths, the H1N1 toll has reached 22 in the State. A woman identified as Bharathi from Barkatpura, also died on Sunday at Gandhi Hospital with suspected symptoms of swine flu. Authorities, however, are yet to confirm the cause of her death.

Meanwhile, 32 persons tested positive on Sunday and 13 more on Saturday taking the total confirmed swine flu cases in the State to 445.

HYDERABAD: The health authorities on Monday confirmed 19 more swine flu cases in the twin cities taking the overall number of positive cases to 464 in the State capital. With H1N1 virus now fully localised, authorities are mulling to do away with airport screening and concentrate the resources at areas where the flu is aggressive.

Of the 19 positive H1N1 cases, two swine flu patients hail from Nizamabad and Khammam while the rest are from twin cities. A pregnant woman Kalpana (24) from Nizamabad died at Gandhi Hospital on Monday with suspected symptoms of swine flu.
District health authorities, however, said that the cause of death could only be ascertained after necessary tests are conducted. Four swine flu positive patients who underwent treatment have been discharged from Gandhi Hospital on Sunday. Presently, the hospital has 34 swine flu positive patients out of which two patients are on ventilator support.

Doctors maintain that it is advisable to avoid pregnancy at the time when a full blown H1N1 virus is present in the local community. ?Many complications can develop for the foetus and the mother during treatment of swine flu. It is always better to take preventive steps because the virus is full blown in the community,? State coordinator for swine flu Dr. K. Subhakar said.

Free consultancy


Meanwhile, district health authorities will hold a meeting with members of Andhra Pradesh Nursing Homes Association (APNA) on Tuesday to chalk out a plan wherein clinics and nursing homes will provide free consultancy and awareness on swine flu to public.

The members of Fair Price Shops Association of Hyderabad have come forward to print posters and pamphlets on swine flu and distribute them among the customers who visit 798 fair price shops in twin cities, according to District Medical and Health Officer (DM&HO) Dr. Ch. Jaya Kumari.

Swine flu death toll in Hyderabad mounts to 25

Hyderabad, Sep 22 (PTI) The death toll due to swine flu has risen to 25 in the city with four more persons succumbing to the H1N1 virus here, officials said today.

According to District Health Medical Officer Jayakumari these four deaths had taken place over the last three days, but were confirmed for the infection today.

Two of them were reported from Osmania Hospital, while Yashoda Malakpet Hospital and Gandhi Hospital accounted for one each, she said.

Jayakumari said 685 patients were screened today. As many as 150 samples were collected of which 46 sent to the lab for examination.

Eight patients were on ventilators in different hospitals, she added.

KADAPA: The first swine flu death was recorded in Kadapa district on Tuesday with the death of a 40-year-old woman Fayazunnisa, 45, of Rajula Colony in Rayachoti town in Rajiv Gandhi Institute of Medical Sciences hospital here.
When Fayazunnisa went to a private nursing home in Kadapa on Sunday, Dr. P. Bali Reddy referred her to RIMS hospital, but her family members took her to Ruia Hospital at Tirupati, Director of RIMS Hospital P. Chandrasekhar said on Tuesday.

Doctors admitted her and took a swab from her throat, but the patient discreetly left the hospital around Sunday midnight, he said.

However, the health officials traced her and she was subsequently admitted to RIMS Hospital on Monday. As she was detected to be suffering from swine flu as well as pulmonary arterial hypertension, she was treated for both the ailments.

Fayazunnisa died on Tuesday morning, despite being given artificial respiration with a ventilator and performing emergency surgery, Dr. Chandrasekhar stated.

Meanwhile, two others ? Raja Reddy of Veerapunayunipalle and Madhavi, a pregnant woman of Kadapa ? were deduced to have been afflicted by swine flu and were undergoing treatment in Ruia hospital.

Receives petitions


Nalgonda Staff Reporter writes: District Collector S. A. M. Rizwi resumed duties on Tuesday after completely recovering from swine flu. Minister for Information Technology K. Venkat Reddy and others called on the Collector on the occasion of Ramzan and extended festival greetings here on Monday night.

Meanwhile, the Collector received petitions from the public on their grievances and reviewed important files throughout the day in his chambers in the Collectorate on Tuesday.

Meanwhile, three persons of the district including a medico have been undergoing treatment for swine flu at different hospitals in Hyderabad.

Swine flu scare mars funeral

Relatives stay away for the fear of contracting the disease


WARANGAL: People in Gagilapur stayed away from attending the funeral of one of their villagers fearing swine flu. They suspected that Thatikonda Krishna (30) died of swine flu and the disease being contagious might strike them too.
It was rather strange in a village environment for relatives to stay away from a funeral when the usual practice is for the entire village to flock around the deceased home as an expression of solidarity and regard. Instead, most people pestered the family to tell them how he died and where.

According to Siddaiah, Krishna?s brother, the latter was residing in Medchal and was admitted to the Gandhi Hospital for pneumonia a fortnight ago.

He succumbed to his illness on Tuesday morning. The body was brought to his native village, Gagilapur, in Maddur mandal to enable the parents to see and conduct the funeral. The villagers who were already in dread of swine flu turned panicky and terrorised the grief-stricken family.

The village sarpanch accompanied by two others came to ensure that the funeral was conducted far away and completed on time.

Buchaiah, resident of Narkatpalli in Nalgonda district, died at Osmania hospital here due to swine flu, District Health Medical Officer Dr Jaya Kumari said.

HYDERABAD: Three people died of suspected swine flu on Wednesday. Only one death, that of 43-year-old Varun who died at Global Hospital, was
officially declared as a swine flu case by the district health authorities.

The swine flu death toll reached 31 in the state on Wednesday with OGH declaring the sixth death in the hospital--S K Mahboob Bee, 35, a native of Gadwal. However, the official death toll is 26.

The only case authorities confirmed as a swine flu death on Wednesday was that of Varun, who had a cloth store in Hi-Tec City and was admitted to Global Hospital four days ago. The hospital's doctors said that Varun's family had sought treatment at another hospital earlier and shifted him to Global Hospital after his condition deteriorated.

The death of 18-year-old Sumantha of Patancheru who died in the early morning hours of Wednesday at Gandhi Hospital was not declared as a swine flu death because of the absence of sample collection. "She was a probable case of swine flu. She was admitted on Tuesday at 7 pm and died at 5.30 am on Wednesday. Since it was late, we could not collect the sample," Gandhi Hospital swine flu nodal officer Dr Narsimlu said.

Apart from these two deaths, at Osmania General Hospital (OGH) a H1N1 suspect case, Madhu Reddy died. Hospital authorities said that the cause of his death would be confirmed only after the reports are received from the Institute of Preventive Medicine (IPM). Madhu was admitted to OGH two days ago and had other complications too at the time of admission.

Meanwhile, 24 people tested positive for the virus on Wednesday.

Hyderabad, Sept 24 (PTI) Two persons, including a pregnant woman, today died of swine flu in the state, taking the death toll due to the viral infection in Andhra Pradesh to 28, a top health official said.

Imtiaz Ali, 24, a resident of Chanchalguda, succumbed to the illness at Apollo Hospital, where he was admitted on September 13.

Besides Ali, 20-year-old Sunanda, who was twenty weeks pregnant, also succumbed to the deadly H1N1 virus. She was admitted to the hospital on September 20.

Officials said that out of 101 patients who were tested today, 41 have reported positive.

HYDERABAD: The swine flu situation in the capital and elsewhere continues to remain grim with officials confirming three more deaths on Thursday taking the toll to 29 in the State. The deceased include Imtiaz Ali (20), B. Vinay (43) and a pregnant woman Sunanda (22) who died at the Osmania General Hospital on Thursday.

Health authorities also confirmed 41 more cases of swine flu out of 101 samples tested. Imtiaz Ali of Chanchalguda died at Apollo Hospitals while Varun, a resident of Madhapur, died at Aware-Global Hospitals, L. B. Nagar, authorities confirmed. The intensity of swine flu was so immense that in the last 24 hours, Gandhi Hospital has admitted nearly 100 patients with suspected swine flu symptoms. The outpatient (OP) wing of the hospital had nearly 200 patients and at Chest Hospital, the outpatient inflow has shot up to 250 on Thursday. Health Minister Danam Nagendar visited the Government Chest Hospital on Thursday . The government would be spending Rs. 4.5 crore to acquire new ventilators for government hospitals, the Minister said. Authorities said that Kondapur area hospital would be converted into an exclusive 51-ventilator facility. A website is being readied to provide information about availability of beds for swine flu patients at private and government hospitals.

HYDERABAD: Three more persons succumbed to H1N1 virus at Gandhi Hospital, authorities confirmed on Friday.

The victims have been identified as Ravindra (32) of Warangal, Pasha (24) from Jahanuma and Indumathi (26) from Patancheru. The swine flu death toll in the State surged to 32 of which 11 deaths occurred at Gandhi Hospital alone. In quite a contrast, doctors at the Government Chest Hospital, Erragadda on Friday successfully revived a swine flu patient, who was on ventilator support for six days.

First instance


This was the first such case in a Government Hospital wherein a H1N1 patient was kept on a ventilator and doctors managed to rescue the patient. The swine flu patient, who was overweight (95 kg) and a smoker, was now able to breath without any support. ?We managed to revive him by monitoring 24 hours. This indicates that there is no need to give up hope on patients on ventilator. Such critical cases too can be revived,? said Assistant Professor (Anaesthesia) Dr. G. Madhavi, who was in-charge of the patient.

Meanwhile, the authorities confirmed 31 more cases of swine flu today. The total swine flu positive cases had now gone up to 505 in the State. Doctors said that 79 samples were sent for testing to IPM out of which 31 tested positive. Of the 31 positive, 11 were admitted to Gandhi Hospital.

Since August 18, when Gandhi Hospital started accepting swine flu patients, 1,824 persons had been screened, of which 460 tested positive and 449 patients received treatment and recovered. ?Of the 11 deaths, six were referred from private hospitals in critical condition,? pointed out Dr. Narasimha, in-charge of swine flu wing at Gandhi Hospital.

Swine flu claims one more life, AP toll rises to 31 (39)

Hyderabad, Sep 26 (PTI) Swine flu claimed another victim here pushing the toll due to the deadly virus in the state to 31 even as 35 new cases were detected today, health officials said.

Madan succumbed to the virus at Osmania Hospital yesterday, State Health Director Dr Dasrath Reddy said.

Of the 67 samples tested today, 35 have been confirmed as positive cases, he said, adding that 538 persons have tested positive for swine flu in the state since the outbreak of the pandemic.

HYDERABAD: One more death of 35-year-old Murlidhar Reddy of Kukatpally was confirmed by the state health authorities on Saturday. Murlidhar was
admitted at Osmania General Hospital on September 20 and died in the late evening on September 24.

Meanwhile, 35 people tested positive for the virus on Saturday taking the total positive cases in the state to 538.

Sept. 27: Private hospitals in the city are facing a rush of patients as medical institutes run by the state government are focusing on swine flu. Also, fearing an attack of swine flu, many patients have stopped visiting government hospitals, and are seeking medical treatment in private clinics and hospitals.
The city has become a hub of swine flu with one more fresh case of death reported on Sunday, taking the overall toll to 32.
A 42-year-old woman, Savithri, died due to swine flu at Gandhi Hospital on Sunday afternoon.
According to Hyderabad District Medical and Health Officer, Dr Ch. Jayakumari, the woman had developed multiple organ failure, leading to her death.?We have already distributed Tamiflu to her family members as a precautionary measure to protect them from possible infection,? said Ms Jayakumari.
In the city, the government-run Gandhi and Osmania hospitals are focusing so much on swine flu, that patients have started moving elsewhere.
According to sources at Gandhi hospital, a majority of patients have started going in for treatment at private hospitals leading to an unnecessary load of patients there.
Already, major city hospitals which are handling swine flu cases are so heavily occupied that normal patients are finding it difficult to get beds there.
?I have been roaming around for the last one week for treatment at Gandhi hospital and a corporate hospital. I have still not managed to get a bed for my son,? said Mr K. Srinivasa, father of a swine flu patient.
On the other hand, the government has failed to make medical facilities available despite setting up 72 health centres. This has led to excessive dependence on major hospitals, but the district medical department is still claiming that changes would be taken soon.
?We are in process of increasing the number of doctors working on swine flu cases in the district so that it can ease the burden on both government and private hospitals?, said a source with the department.
Elsewhere, four swine flu-related deaths were reported across the country while another four suspected deaths were confirmed as having caused by the pandemic, taking the nationwide toll to 298.

HYDERABAD: The swine flu pandemic in the State Capital and elsewhere is presenting encouraging signs of containment, even as a youth from old city died on Sunday.

Of the 120 samples tested in the last 48 hours, only 19 persons tested positive, which is heartening, given the fact that usually 50 per cent of the samples used to be H1N1 positive.

Third wave

The swine flu victim, who died on Sunday at Erragadda Government Chest Hospital, was identified as Sajal (20) from City College area. The H1N1 toll went up to 32 while the number of persons who tested positive increased to 574.
?The number of swine flu positive persons has started to decrease. If this trend continues for next 48 hours, then we can truly say that this wave has been contained. But, we have to be prepared for the third wave, which could come in winter,? warned State coordinator for swine flu Dr. K. Subhakar.

Authorities point out that the H1N1 pandemic wave, which was widespread in Europe and others parts, has waned considerably.

?Public and authorities in Europe are bracing up for the next wave in winter. So, there is a possibility of containment of this wave of H1N1 pandemic in our State,? he added.

The health officials informed that the outpatient wing at Gandhi and Osmania General Hospitals have received less number of patients in the last 48 hours. ?This could be due to Dasara festival. There is a dip in critical cases too. At Chest Hospital, there are no patients on ventilator support,? informed District Medical and Health Officer (DM&HO) Dr. Ch. Jaya Kumari.

Mega health camp


Meanwhile, the district authorities are launching a mega health camp and an awareness rally on swine flu in Secunderabad on October 1.

?The camp will provide medicines for viral fevers and screen patients for swine flu. All private and government hospitals will take part in this mega health camp. Two more camps will be held in the coming month,? Dr. Jaya Kumari said.
