Four more swine flu cases in Pune, toll 75 (76)
    PTI 6 October 2009, 12:56pm IST

PUNE: The swine flu toll in the city has risen to 75 with four more persons succumbing to the virus, health officials said today.

The victims were identified as Soyab Shaikh (5), Sanjay Sakpal (35), Jyoti Pardeshi (45), and Trupti Magar (21), who died in different city hospitals.

The pandemic, which started in the city around three months back, has continued unabated with periodic aggravation in positive cases especially after the recent Ganesh and Navratri festivals.

The health department has started dispensing anti-viral Tamiflu tablets to almost all symptomatic cases without waiting for throat swab test reports from National Institute of Virology (NIV).

The district administration was also worried over the fall-out of overcrowding at election rallies ahead of the Maharashtra Assembly polls.

Osteopetrosis, literally stone bone', also known as marble bone disease and Albers-Schonberg disease, is an extremely rare inherited disorder , whereby the bones harden and become denser," said Iyer. "The boy had taken blood transfusion at the YCM hospital for seven times in the recent past. He was at the end-stage of his life when he was admitted to the hospital on Monday."

The second victim, Praniti Lohakare of Ambegaon, died at 10.30 pm on Thursday. "She also had an underlying medical condition of ventricular septal defect a congenital heart disease in which the patient has a hole in the wall between the right and left ventricles of the heart," Iyer said. Praniti was admitted to the hospital on Tuesday. Her condition was critical at the time of admission.
Amar Ingale, a one-month-old infant from Mehtrewadi, Chikhli, was the third victim of the flu. He died at 7 am on Friday. "He was admitted to the YCM hospital for aspiration pneumonia on Thursday," Iyer said.

The daily update on swine flu in respect of positive cases detected, total patients screened, etc, was not prepared by the state health officials late on Friday.

Three kids, including two with severe underlying medical conditions, succumbed to the H1N1 influenza at YCM hospital in Pimpri in the last two days.

PUNE: On the day the district administration and the state health services announced they were working on an action plan to tackle a possible second
outbreak of the H1N1 influenza, Pune reported its 100th swine flu death.

The H1N1 toll figures in Pune district have seen a steady, almost day-to-day climb since August 3 when 14-year-old city schoolgirl Reeda Shaikh became the country?s first casualty to the virus.

For the record, the 100th H1N1 casualty was Mohini Undre (28), a resident of Manjari Khurd village, 13 km from the city. She died at a hospital in Hadapsar here on Thursday morning. Mohini was admitted to the hospital in a critical condition and was immediately put on the ventilator. Like many of the earlier deaths, Mohini too died of acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS).

Ten more people tested positive for swine flu on Thursday, taking the number of infected people in Pune district to 4,244. The number of people on the Tamiflu regime stood at 37,357 on the day, and a whopping 6.7 lakh people have been screened so far. Fourteen patients are still in a critical condition in various hospitals. Five of them are on the ventilator.

Meanwhile, the district administration and the state health department are bracing for a second possible wave of the influenza. However, the National Institute of Virology (NIV) here cannot tell for certain whether or not a second wave would come and, if it indeed does happen, whether its intensity would be strong or mild. The experts there say that a second wave is usually seen five to six months after the first outbreak.

The administration, for its part, is planning more intensive care units, isolation wards, medical as well as paramedical workers and a surveillance system in both the rural and urban areas. An action plan is to be submitted to the state government in the next four days.

?As per our present estimates, we will require 17 additional ICUs and 47 quarantine wards for an estimated infected population of one lakh during a possible second outbreak of the flu,? Pune?s resident deputy collector Anil Pawar told TOI. ?As per estimates set by the World Health Organisation (WHO), around 20 per cent of the population in the district is likely to be infected if a second wave happens.?

The approximate population in Pune district is 80 lakh. ?This means around 1.6 lakh of the population could get infected during the second phase of the flu. We are, therefore, preparing a concrete action plan visualising the potential impact of the flu so that we are not caught off-guard,? Pawar said.
