    Swine flu claims five

Express News ServiceFirst Published : 02 Jun 2010 06:26:32 AM ISTLast Updated :

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The H1N1 virus is still looming large over the State. Three deaths have been reported in Thiruvananthapuram over a gap of two days. Out of this, two had been reported from SAT Hospital and one from the Medical College Hospital here on Tuesday.

According to the health authorities, in May alone, five deaths had been reported in the State owing to swine flu, of which four had been women. Three were pregnant women and one died after delivery. All the four were tested H1N1 positive. A person admitted to the Medical College Hospital here on Monday died on Tuesday morning and his test result also turned H1N1 positive.

However, the health authorities said that there was cause for concern as the disease was not spreading in the State. No extra alert has been declared in the State as the Health Department had already taken extra efforts to prevent the spreading of the disease.

Thiruvananthapuram, Jun 4 (PTI) A 19-year-old girl has died of swine flu near here, taking the death toll due to the viral infection in Kerala to seven in the last one month, prompting the Health Department to issue an alert.

Athira Shiju, a post-natal patient under treatment for bilateral pneumonia at a private medical college hospital at Venjaramood in the district died yesterday, Health Department sources said.

With this, the death toll in the state since the outbreak of the H1N1 last year rose to 44, Dr Amar, nodal officer for H1N1 in the health department told PTI.

"Both the government and private hospitals have been alerted and doctors are being updated on how to tackle the situation," he said.

The infection, which was mostly found among people coming from abroad in its earlier phase, was now community spread following which we have stepped up the vigilance, he said.

Dengue, swine flu grip Kerala, nine dead

Thiruvananthapuram, June 4 (IANS) With the onset of monsoon, dengue fever and a variant of swine flu have broken out in Kerala, claiming nine lives so far, an official said.

An unspecified number of people have fallen sick in the districts of Pathanamthitta, Kozhikode, Kottayam and Thiruvananthapuram, said officer Amar S. Fettle.

Seven deaths had been reported because of H1N1, he said.

Fettle told IANS that ?everything was under control during the relatively hotter months but now things are not that conducive?.

?Since May 15 things are bad, with 37 people testing positive for HINI and seven people dying because of it,? he said.

There have also been 823 cases of dengue fever ? and two deaths.

Since the start of the year, more than 8.45 lakh people across the state have been affected by fever, he said.

?People have to wake up and keep their surroundings clean. With the monsoon getting stronger, proper public hygiene has to be maintained,? he said.

17 new cases of H1N1 influenza in district
            Staff Reporter

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Seventeen new cases of H1N1 infection were reported in district on Monday, confirming fears that the virus transmission has become rapid in the wake of monsoon and the lowering of mercury levels.

One case each was reported from Malappuram and Kollam districts also, taking the total number of H1N1 cases in the State to 1,697. About 23 persons are currently in home and hospital quarantine across the State, with four cases admitted to the intensive care units. Health officials said the test swab results of 17n cases came together as there was a backlog of two days for sample testing.

?Following the earlier guidelines of the Union Health Ministry, we are testing only category C cases now. The numbers would be much more if we started testing everyone coming to the hospitals with the symptoms of cold because H1N1 is very much a community disease now and for every case confirmed, there could be scores of mild H1N1 cases in the community, which might resolve spontaneously with proper rest, food and hot fluids,? State nodal officer for H1N1 Amar Fettle said.

The cases suddenly flared up with the commencement of the rain and eight deaths were reported in the past one month, five of which were of pregnant women or women who were just delivered of the baby. Public health experts pointed out that in spite of sufficient warnings that the rain could bring alive the virus again, neither the public nor the medical fraternity seemed to have taken these warnings at face value.

Health officials said pregnancy seemed to be the biggest risk factor for vulnerability to H1N1 virus and that ante-natal or pregnant women should be considered as Category B patients even if their symptoms were mild and early treatment with Oseltamivir started. The drug was safe for use during pregnancy. Meanwhile, while the first indigenous vaccine against swine flu ? Vaxiflu-S ? by Zydus Cadila had been released in India last week, the stocks are yet to reach the drug markets here.

For comparison; there were only 9 confirmed cases in all of May.

Achuthanandan?s driver down with swine flu
                June 9th, 2010 - 4:57 pm ICT by IANS -
Thiruvananthapuram, June 9 (IANS) Kerala Chief Minister V.S. Achuthanandan and his family are now under the watchful eyes of medical experts after his driver Sundaran tested positive for H1N1 (influenza A) virus ? often referred to as swine flu.
Sundaran is admitted to the General Hospital here.

?Yes it is true but I used a different car once I heard the news of his illness,? Achuthanandan said Wednesday at a cabinet briefing here.

The car that was driven by Sundaran has been quarantined.

Negating the statement by Health Minister P.K. Sreemathi that the media was cooking up false stories that the state was in a fever siege, Achuthanandan said: ?Due to rains several ailments have surfaced. All local bodies in the state will start a week-long campaign to see that proper sanitary conditions are maintained.?

For the last one week, the media had reported about spread of fever in the state ? including from H1N1 virus, dengue, malaria and rat fever.

Five people died due to fever Tuesday while nearly 2,000 got admitted to various state-run hospitals.

The central health department Wednesday came out with a report that Kerala leads in the country with the highest spread of influenza A (H1N1) virus and in the last one week alone 19 people tested positive for the virus.

Share ? print ? T+ Chief Minister V. S. Achuthanandan said here on Wednesday that the government would take strong steps to prevent the spread of contagious fever and other diseases.

The Chief Minister told the media after Wednesday?s Cabinet meeting that with intermittent rains, various diseases were spreading in the State. The government was taking measures including mosquito-control to check the outbreak.

Mr. Achuthanandan said that the local self-governments would undertake a week-long drive with public participation for mosquito-control and removal of waste materials. Meetings would be held at the panchayat and municipal levels to organise the drive.

Health inspectors and public health nurses are directed to concentrate on preventive measures. They would be exempted from other duties.

Official reports indicate that about 10,000 people are reporting at hospitals across the State every day with fever and other symptoms.

They included cases of Influenza A (H1N1), dengue, leptospirosis and malaria. On Tuesday alone, five people died, three of them because of A (H1N1).

Swine flu: 15 positive cases in Kerala
                    STAFF WRITER 20:29 HRS IST
Thiruvananthapuram, Jun 10 (PTI) With swine flu infections recurring in Kerala, the state authorities today put the number of positive cases at 15 even as they stepped up preventive and awarness campaign across the districts.

While 15 patients were under hospital quarantine, another 47 persons were underoing treatment at their homes, a press note issued by the swine flu monitoring cell of the Health Department said.

Throat swabs of 65 patients have been sent for testing since yesterday, it said.

The Department said no death has been reported since June 7 when two women from Kollam succumbed to the virus infection in the Medical College Hospital here.

The district-wise break-up of positive cases was Kozhikode six, Thiruvananthapuram five and Kollam and Malappuram two each.

15 new H1N1 cases confirmed in State

                      Staff Reporter

Death toll this season put at 13

                      Focus on preventive measures

Take good rest and consume plenty of hot fluid

Thiruvananthapuram: Fifteen new cases of H1N1 infection have been confirmed in the State, taking the total number of cases reported during this season (since May 1) to 129.

Of the new cases, five cases are from Thiruvananthapuram, six from Kozhikode and two each from Kollam and Malappuram.

Two deaths in Kollam district, which occurred on June 7, have now been confirmed as due to H1N1 infection. Deepa (27) of Chathannoor and Sheeja (26) of Edayadi, had died at the Medical College Hospital here while undergoing treatment for Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome and viral pneumonia, two well-known complications of H1N1 infection.

The total death toll due to H1N1 this season has thus risen to 13.

About 15 persons are currently under hospital quarantine while 47 have been advised home quarantine. The throat swabs collected from 65 persons with acute symptoms have been sent for lab analysis.

Public health experts have pointed out that behavioural change among the public was crucial for checking the spread of H1N1 infection as it had now become a disease in the community.

?Please protect yourself from any complications of the infection by taking good rest and consuming plenty of hot fluids. Most importantly, prevent the transmission of the infection by staying at home. Stress should also be given to early detection ? any unexpected increase in ordinary illness or if the patient's condition does not improve as it should have within two days, should be a cause for concern. Guidelines have already been issued in the case of pregnant women, that treatment be started with Tamiflu without delay,? a senior health official said.

Schools should follow the special H1N1 guidelines that had been issued earlier and teachers should be asked to watch out for any child presenting in class with fever or mild flu.

                      Viral fever

Meanwhile, fever patients continue to crowd both government and private hospitals across the State but most of the cases are that of simple viral fever, which should resolve without any complications, with proper medicines and rest, Health officials claimed.

While thousands of fever cases are appearing in OP clinics in various hospitals across the State, on Thursday, 12 cases of dengue fever and one case of leptospirosis were confirmed, according to Health Department's statistics.
Of the 12 cases of dengue, seven are from Pathanamthitta, four from Kottayam and one is from Kollam. One of the private hospitals in the city reported the death of a staff member on Thursday ? Santhosh (42) ? as due to dengue haemorrhagic fever. However, the Health Department is yet to confirm it or include it in its official statistics.

                      Directive to DMOs

Director of Health Services M.K. Jeevan said that specific directions and guidelines had been given to all District Medical Officers to strengthen preventive and control measures to check the spread of vector-borne diseases.

All hospitals and health care centres under the public health system should be prepared to meet any emergency situations when large number of fever cases might descend. Incidence of infectious diseases should be strictly monitored and as soon as it is reported, the health field staff in the geographic locations where the diseases are reported should be asked to launch full-fledged control and preventive measures within 24 hours.

Special fever clinics should be started in areas from where fever cases are being reported in large numbers and the health workers and ASHA workers here should ensure that people are encouraged to seek early treatment.

At the panchayat-level, mobile fever clinics have been set up, which will deliver medical care to people by camping in specific locations in the panchayat.

Mosquito control measures should be augmented on a war footing and fever wards should be set up in major hospitals, the DHS has directed. Rapid Response Teams will monitor and strengthen the outbreak control measures in every district.

In Post #25 above, the death toll from H1N1 is put at 13 this season (since May 1st). There were 2 fatalities in May, which means 11 fatalities in the first 10 days of June. That makes this outbreak at least as lethal as the October/ November wave, but without anything like the same number of confirmed cases. The numbers below are taken from the consolidated status updates.

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: At least 25 people have died and hundreds more hospitalised with dengue, H1N1 and rat fever since pre-monsoon showers hit Kerala over a month ago. The outbreak hasn't even spared CM V S Achuthanandan's office with his driver testing positive for H1N1.

Thursday's causalities included two girls with swine flu and an HR manager of a reputed private hospital in the state capital, who succumbed to dengue fever. Eight fever-related deaths were reported on Wednesday including four cases of dengue and one H1N1.

This is in addition to the thousands, who are turning up at the government hospitals every day with symptoms of various kinds of fever. About 13,000 people took the treatment on Wednesday alone.

Achutanandan's driver Sundaram was identified with Swine Flu earlier this week. Ironically, it came a day after state health minister P K Sreemathi denied that the situation was alarming and blamed the media for spreading panic.
