    Swine and Seasonal Flu Monitor is a weekly report produced by the Respiratory Disease Office of the Centre for Health Protection. It summarizes and monitors the weekly situation of HSI and seasonal influenza in Hong Kong.


    Local situation on Human Swine Influenza (Pandemic influenza H1N1(2009)) (as of Dec 23, 2009)

    • The activity of human swine influenza (HSI) remains at similar level compared to previous week as reflected by the number of attendances at designated flu clinics for influenza-like illness (ILI) (Fig 1) and the consultation rates for ILI at general practitioners? clinics (Fig 3). Currently 29% of patients attending Designated Flu Clinics (DFCs) for ILI symptoms were tested positive for HSI (Fig 2).
    • As of Dec 23, 2009, 114 patients with HSI infection remained in public hospitals.
    • The weekly number of severe cases recorded in week 51 (Dec 13 to 19) was 9. As of Dec 23, a total of 205 severe cases were recorded. These severe cases included 123 males and 82 females with ages ranged from 10 months to 95 years (median: 51 years).
    • In week 51 (Dec 13 to 19), three fatal cases were recorded. As of Dec 23, a total of 51 fatal cases were recorded. They were 34 males and 17 females, age ranged from 11 to 95 years (median: 55 years).


    Local situation on seasonal influenza (as of Dec 23, 2009)
    • The seasonal influenza activity is low. In week 51 (Dec 13 to 19), 0%, 2.6% and 1.7% of all circulating viruses were H1, H3 and B respectively (Fig 4).

      • The activity of human swine influenza (HSI) slightly decreased compared to previous week as reflected by the number of attendances at designated flu clinics for influenza-like illness (ILI) (Fig 1) and the consultation rates for ILI at general practitioners? clinics (Fig 3). Currently about 30% of patients attending Designated Flu Clinics (DFCs) for ILI symptoms were tested positive for HSI (Fig 2).
      • As of Dec 30, 2009, 108 patients with HSI infection remained in public hospitals.
      • The weekly number of severe cases recorded in week 52 (Dec 20 to 26) was 8. As of Dec 30, a total of 210 severe cases were recorded. These severe cases included 125 males and 85 females with ages ranged from 10 months to 95 years (median: 51 years).
      • In week 52 (Dec 20 to 26), three fatal cases were recorded. As of Dec 30, a total of 52 fatal cases were recorded. They were 35 males and 17 females, age ranged from 11 to 95 years (median: 55 years).


      Local situation on seasonal influenza (as of Dec 30, 2009)
      • The seasonal influenza activity is low. In week 52 (Dec 20 to 26), 0%, 0% and 4.6% of all circulating viruses were H1, H3 and B respectively (Fig 4).

        • The weekly number of severe cases recorded in week 1 (Dec 27, 2009 to Jan 2, 2010) was 4. As of Jan 6, 2010, a total of 215 severe cases were recorded. These severe cases included 130 males and 85 females with ages ranged from 10 months to 95 years (median: 51 years).
        • In week 1 (Dec 27, 2009 to Jan 2, 2010), three fatal cases were recorded. As of Jan 6, 2010, a total of 55 fatal cases were recorded. They were 37 males and 18 females, age ranged from 11 to 95 years (median: 55 years).

        • The seasonal influenza activity is low. In week 1 (Dec 27, 2009 to Jan 2, 2010), 0%, 1.9% and 1.9% of all circulating viruses were H1, H3 and B respectively (Fig 4).

          • In week 2 (Jan 3 to 9, 2010), two fatal cases were recorded. As of Jan 13, 2010, a total of 56 fatal cases were recorded. They were 37 males and 19 females, age ranged from 11 to 95 years (median: 55 years).

          • The seasonal influenza activity is low. In week 2 (Jan 3 to 9, 2010), 0%, 4.0% and 14.1% of all circulating viruses were H1, H3 and B respectively (Fig 4).

                      • The weekly number of severe cases recorded in week 10 (Feb 28 to Mar 6, 2010) was 8. As of Mar 10, 2010, a total of 260 severe cases were recorded. These severe cases included 160 males and 100 females with ages ranged from 30 days to 95 years (median: 51 years).

                            Swine and Seasonal Flu Monitor is a weekly report produced by the Respiratory Disease Office of the Centre for Health Protection. It summarizes and monitors the weekly situation of HSI and seasonal influenza in Hong Kong.


                            Local situation on Human Swine Influenza (Pandemic influenza H1N1(2009)) - (as of Mar 31, 2010)

                            • As indicated by the latest surveillance data, the activity of Human Swine Influenza (HSI) in the community decreased slightly when compared to the previous week.
                            • As of Mar 31, 2010, 37 patients with HSI infection remained in public hospitals.
                            • The number of severe cases recorded in week 13 (Mar 21 to 27, 2010) was 3. As of Mar 31, 2010, a total of 273 severe cases were recorded. These severe cases included 167 males and 106 females with ages ranged from 30 days to 95 years (median: 52 years).
                            • In week 13 (Mar 21 to 27, 2010), no fatal cases were recorded. As of Mar 31, 2010, a total of 76 fatal cases were recorded. They were 53 males and 23 females, age ranged from 1 to 95 years (median: 55.5 years).


                            Local situation on seasonal influenza (as of Mar 31, 2010)
                            • The latest surveillance data showed an increase in seasonal influenza activity and Hong Kong is still in the traditional peak season for seasonal influenza.

                              • As of Apr 7, 2010, 35 patients with HSI infection remained in public hospitals.
                              • The number of severe cases recorded in week 14 (Mar 28 to Apr 3, 2010) was 3. As of Apr 7, 2010, a total of 273 severe cases were recorded. These severe cases included 167 males and 106 females with ages ranged from 30 days to 95 years (median: 52 years).
                              • In week 14 (Mar 28 to Apr 3, 2010), two fatal cases were recorded. As of Apr 7, 2010, a total of 78 fatal cases were recorded. They were 54 males and 24 females, age ranged from 1 to 95 years (median: 55.5 years).

                                As indicated by the latest surveillance data, the activity of Human Swine Influenza (HSI) in the community remains at a low level.

                                As of Apr 21, 2010, 28 patients with HSI infection remained in public hospitals.

                                The number of severe cases recorded in week 16 (Apr 11 to 17, 2010) was 1. As of Apr 21, 2010, a total of 277 severe cases were recorded. These severe cases included 170 males and 107 females with ages ranged from 30 days to 95 years (median: 52 years).

                                In week 16 (Apr 11 to 17, 2010), two fatal cases were recorded. As of Apr 21, 2010, a total of 80 fatal cases were recorded. They were 56 males and 24 females, age ranged from 1 to 95 years (median: 56 years).

                                Influenza detection was 143 in week 16 (Apr 11 to 17, 2010). Laboratory surveillance detected 34 human swine influenza viruses, 1 influenza A (H3) virus, 3 untyped influenza A viruses and 105 influenza B viruses.

                                In week 16 (Apr 11 to 17, 2010), 3 influenza-like illness (ILI) outbreaks were recorded. In the first 4 days of week 17, 2010 (as of Apr 21), there were 10 ILI outbreaks received.
