CHANDIGARH/MOHALI: With the spread of H1N1 influenza not showing any signs of abating, 12 persons were detected positive for the flu on Saturday.

Of these, five cases were reported from Mohali alone. Three persons have fallen prey to the flu during the last few days.
UT nodal officer for swine flu H C Gera said an eight-year-old, a student of Class III at Ryan International School, was found infected with H1N1. The student?s parents are doctors. After the flu status was confirmed, the school suspended all sections of Class III for one week, the officer said, adding that students who used to travel in the patient?s bus had also been asked to remain home for the same period. A 25-year-old from Yamunanagar in Haryana also tested positive for the flu at PGI.

Meanwhile, UT officer Gera said five positive cases were reported from various parts of Punjab. These included a woman and her 15-day-old child. The mother gave birth to twins after which she developed symptoms of swine flu and on collecting the samples she tested positive, after which the newborns were checked and one was found infected. In Mohali, five persons were found infected with swine flu, taking the total number of positive cases to be detected in the district to 25. If those whose swab samples were sent to Chandigarh hospitals for testing are also taken into
consideration, the number would climb up to 37.

Of the five cases detected on Saturday, one is a nursing student at Fortis Hospital. Mohali district health officer S P Surila said the hospital had been asked to identify the contact cases.

DHO Surila said as there were 70 students in the nursing college, the hospital had been asked to find out if anybody had caught the infection. ??We have advised them not to let students attend to patients for their training programme and we?ve been assured full cooperation,?? the officer said. Of the remaining four cases, one case each was reported from Sector 69, Sector 67, Saini Vihar Baltana and Kurali.

In Sector 69, a 25-year-old woman was found positive. She is a staff nurse at PGI Chandigarh. From Baltana, a woman was found infected with H1N1, from Sector 67, a resident of Guru Har Sahai Society tested positive and her nine contact cases had been identified already. A 24-year-old youth from Kurali was also found infected. Surila said all the positive cases had been asked to contact the emergency department of civil hospital for their treatment.

Chandigarh, Dec 10 (IANS) The fear of swine flu has pressed the panic button in this union territory. With the advent of winter, there has been a sudden surge in the number of positive cases of the influenza A (H1N1) virus reported in city hospitals.
Till Oct 31, only 57 positive cases were reported here but during the next 40 days, up to Dec 10, Chandigarh got 139 new confirmed cases, raising the number of positive cases to 196.

At least 25 casualties have been reported in this region.

?We have screened 617 suspected cases of swine flu and 196 of them tested positive. Out of these, 111 belonged to Chandigarh while remaining cases are from Punjab and Haryana,? a health official said Thursday.

?FIftysix cases were reported from different schools (49 alone from private schools) whereas over 30 were doctors working in leading hospitals of Chandigarh,? he added.
In the last three days, seven deaths due to swine flu and at least 15 new cases have been reported in city hospitals.

A testing facility is available here at the virology department of the Postgraduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGIMER), which is also catering to the needs of neighbouring states like Punjab, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh and Jammu and Kashmir.

Isolation ward facilities are available here at PGIMER and at government hospitals in Sector-16 and at the Government Medical College and Hospital in Sector 32.

?Our health department is fully equipped with all the necessary equipment like face masks, anti viral drugs (Tamiflu) and laboratory facilities for preventing and controlling swine flu cases. There is no need to panic and we are capable of handling any kind of emergency situation,? H.C. Gera, UT nodal officer for swine flu, told IANS Thursday.

CHANDIGARH: With the number of swine flu cases going up in the city, a UT health department technical committee on Saturday declared that the infection now fell under the category of community spread, according to central government guidelines.

The panel decided to increase the doctors authorized to prescribe tamiflu. For this, Indian Medical Association has been asked to submit the names of 10 doctors who could be extended the authorization.
This was decided during a review meeting convened by UT home-cum-health secretary Ram Niwas on Saturday with members of the expert committee.

In the wake of falling temperatures and increase in the number of cases, the health secretary asked PGI and GMCH-32 to enhance their capacity for tertiary care. To cope with the increasing number of H1N1 cases, it was also decided that the possibility to rope in Command Hospital, Chandimandir, would be explored.
The officer said with a number of patients trickling in from the region, the Haryana chief secretary, health, had been asked to develop ICU facilities at Rohtak, Agroha and Mullana.

Taking a serious note of reports that some private laboratories had collected samples from suspected H1N1 carriers, and sent them to Delhi, the health secretary warned against this practice.

Out of 32 swine flu deaths reported in city hospitals so far, 15 persons belonged to Punjab, 10 were from Haryana and five were residents of Chandigarh. As many as 270 persons have tested positive for H1N1 so far. Of these, 70 belong to Punjab, 63 are from Haryana and the remaining 133 are from Chandigarh.

4 more die of swine flu
                          Tribune News Service

                          Chandigarh, December 23
Four more persons succumbed to swine flu here today, raising the death toll to 41. The number of H1N1 patients has risen to 293, with new cases being reported during the day. Of these, two patients are from Chandigarh, three from Haryana and one from HP.

The global pandemic continues to spread in the city and surrounding areas. Deaths were reported from Panchkula, Nabha, Nahan and Pinjore. The deceased have been identified as 22-year-old Manju from Pinjore, Rani (38) from Nahan, Priya (17) from Nabha and Shivkant (28) from Panchkula.

So far, the maximum number of 17 deaths have been reported from Punjab. Haryana comes second with 13 deaths. HC Gera, nodal officer for swine flu, said with the fall in temperature, the rate of viral infection increased.

A doctor at the PGI said the weather was favourable for the spread of infections and swine flu cases would increase. Students and office goers are at a higher risk of contracting the infection.

                          How to be safe

Use disposable tissues and cover the mouth and nose while coughing and sneezing. Dispose of the tissue carefully.
There is always some virus on tabletops, telephones and computers. Try not to touch eyes, nose and mouth frequently.
Washing and sanitising hands frequently is a very effective way of staying away from the infection. Alcohol-based gel or foam hand sanitisers are efficient in killing the virus.
There is no restriction on food and drinks as swine flu is not a food-borne disease. It is transmitted by air-borne droplets from an infected person?s sneeze or cough, or from germs on hands, or germ-laden surfaces.
Wearing a well-fitted mask in public places is advisable. But only a mask can?t save you from the disease.
Drink loads of water and get enough sleep. Sleep deprivation is an unhealthy habit and could affect the immune system.
Stay at least 3 ft away from people with respiratory infection.
                          If you already have it

Confine yourself to a room and wear a mask.
Keep yourself away from public places to avoid spreading the infection to others.
Swine flu is most contagious in the initial five days. In the case of children, it can be contagious up to 10 days.
