NJ Update 1 new death - total 39

H1N1 Weekly Update: Week of December 21, 2009

    Surveillance:

Currently, there is widespread influenza-like activity in New Jersey, which signifies there is flu activity in virtually every county in the state.

The Department is reporting one H1N1 influenza-related death this week:

A 52-year-old Bergen County female with underlying medication conditions. She was hospitalized on Nov. 16 and died on Dec. 9.
Including today?s death, a total of 21 H1N1 deaths have been reported since Sept. 1, 2009. There were 18 deaths reported to the CDC during last spring?s H1N1 outbreak

As a result, New Jersey activity this week will not be reported on the CDC?s weekly nationwide influenza report on Dec. 25, 2009. The Department will report two weeks of surveillance data to the CDC on Dec. 29, 2009, which will appear on the CDC weekly report on Jan. 1, 2010.

Long term care facilities are something to watch:

            From above website:
"During week 52, 0.82% ILI was reported statewide from long term care facilities. This is an increase compared to the previous week (0.50%)."

Additionally, only a portion of the 70 sentinel providers reported:

"During week 52, 3.55% of sentinel provider patient visits were due to ILI. These data reflect reports from sixteen (23%) of the 70 enrolled sentinel providers.
During week 51, 2.99% of sentinel provider patient visits were due to ILI. These data reflect reports from twenty-six (37%) of the 70 enrolled sentinel providers."
