Re: Colorado 2010-2011 Season: Weeks 40-3 (One New Death)
Week 3:
1 new death; total 4
28 new hospitalizations; total 176
Synopsis: Influenza activity continued to increase and spread geographically. Influenza A/H3N2 continues to be the predominant circulating strain, though 2009 H1N1 and influenza B viruses appear to be circulating in increasing amounts.
• For the week ending 01/22, there were 28 new influenza-associated hospitalizations reported along with 10 additional hospitalizations for the previous week, bringing the cumulative total to 176 hospitalizations from 26 counties.
• Influenza-Like Illness levels reported by Kaiser Permanente for the Denver-Boulder metropolitan area increased from 1.0 to 1.2%. Influenza-like illness reported by Mesa County remained low at 0.4%.
• Sentinel hospital labs (17/17 reporting) tested 578 specimens and 16.4% were positive (80% for Type A) compared to 14.3% the previous week. During the past two weeks, PCR typing and subtyping of submitted specimens to the state laboratory indicates: H3N2 – 64%; 2009 H1N1 – 29%; Type B – 7%.
• Brush (Morgan County) reported an influenza B outbreak in a middle school. There were no LTCF outbreaks reported in the past week. Cumulatively, there have been five LTCF outbreaks reported from 3 counties; Denver (3), Baca (1) and Yuma (1).
• A total of 4 deaths (1 adolescent and 3 adults) have been reported.
