?Three suspected typhoid cases in Malabuyoc town?
                Cebu Daily News
                8:24 am | Wednesday, March 14th, 2012

AFTER the outbreak in Tuburan, the Integrated Provincial Health Office (IPHO) admitted there are three suspected typhoid fever cases in Malabuyoc District Hospital.

Dr. Cristina Giango, IPHO head, said the patients showed signs and symptoms of typhoid fever.

She asked the Rural Health Unit (RHU) in the town to check where these patients came from to determine if there are other similar cases in the area.

But Giango said they had yet to confirm if the cases in Alegria town were indeed typhoid fever.

At least 11 suspected victims ages between 5 and 18 and mostly children from barangays Legaspi and Poblacion of Alegria were brought to a local hospital after showing signs of typhoid fever.

But Giango said she has not received reports from the municipal health office confirming that these were cases of typhoid fever.

In Tuburan, cases have gone down as of yesterday...

146 cases of suspected typhoid under surveillance
                          By Alicia F. Nicart
Tuesday 8th of May 2012 TweetFacebookYahooEmailShareThis BORONGAN CITY, Eastern Samar, May 8 (PIA) -- The local government of Maydolong confirmed that 146 cases of suspected cases of typhoid fever are now under surveillance.

Twenty of these cases have been brought to the provincial hospital due to high fever and diarrhea. The other patients are in their respective houses and are being closely monitored by local health workers.

According to Henry Afable, Maydolong mayor, the affected individuals come from the seven poblacion barangays and barangay Maybocog that depend on the Balalong Spring for their water sources.

The mayor confessed that in the early years, the water source was pure and safe for human consumption. In later years, however, due to local migration, the new residents have tainted the purity of the water. Admittedly, Afable said, these residents could not just be automatically uprooted.

?We cannot do that because the land is privately owned and they have put up their respective comfort rooms,? Afable reported.

According to him, the comfort rooms have contributed to the big bacteria count of the water source.

Although the problem has long been in existence, the situation lately has become unwieldy.

To address the problem, Afable said that, he has instructed health workers of his municipality to inform barangay folks to boil their drinking water since water treatment facility and chlorination is inadequate.

Secondly, he convened the Sangguniang Bayan of Maydolong LGU, so they could declare a ?local state of calamity,? so they can access their Quick Response Fund (QRF) of P1.3 million. A portion of the Fund is available which will enable them to buy a P140,000 hypo-chlorinator which could purify water to desired concentration. The other amount would be spent for the purchase of medicines, he added.

As of press time however, Mayor Afable happily reported, that no typhoid cases had so far been reported, and yesterday, only two show symptoms of the disease.

?This could be a sign, that the outbreak is now declining,? the hopeful Mayor revealed. (EOPT/aen-PIA 8, Eastern Samar)

DOH-EV acts to contain typhoid fever outbreak
                            By Aurora J. Casimpan
Wednesday 9th of May 2012 TweetFacebookYahooEmailShareThis TACLOBAN CITY, Leyte, May 9 (PIA) -- The quick action of the Department of Health (DOH) in Eastern Visayas in addressing the typhoid fever outbreak in Maydolong, Eastern Samar stopped the disease from spreading further.

DOH-8 regional director Jaime Bernadas reported that the office quickly sent a team to the town where chlorine was provided in the treatment of contaminated drinking water source. Stricken residents were also treated by the team.

Residents from the 12 barangays of the town were urged by the health department to always observe proper hygiene in handling their food and in the proper garbage disposal to avoid contamination of the typhoid fever disease. The importance of having sanitary toilets was also emphasized by the health department as oral fecal mode is one of the ways in getting the disease.

DOH reported that in their monitoring of the disease, first tracked in March 12 this year, 114 people from the town?s 12 villages were confirmed sick with typhoid fever, though only 27 of those sick were treated in the hospital.

It was confirmed that no death occurred among those stricken with the disease.

Among the barangays of the town that posted the highest number of typhoid cases was the village of Maybocog, which posted 46 cases; Barangay 4 with 20 cases; Barangay 3 with 11 cases and Barangay 5 with eight cases.

The town?s source of drinking water came from Brgy. Mybocog, which explains the most number of typhoid cases coming from the village of Maybocog.

Continuous monitoring of the disease has yielded no new case of the disease aside from the 114 cases reported earlier. (ldl/ajc/IA-8)

Contaminated water causes Typhoid outbreak in Maydolong town
                              By Alicia F. Nicart
                              Monday 21st of May 2012
BORONGAN CITY, Eastern Samar, May 21 (PIA) -- A contaminated water source was cited as one reason for the suspected typhoid fever outbreak in some barangays of Maydolong town, a few weeks past.

This was revealed in a ?preliminary report? sent to mayor Henry Afable by a study team from the Field Epidemiology Training Program (FETP), National Epidemiology Center of the Department of Health, Manila.

To recall, an April 30 report had it, that there were 177 suspected typhoid fever cases, who came from 10 barangays: Maybocog had 77 suspected cases); Brgy. 4 had 26 cases; Brgy. 3 had 17 cases; Brgy. 5 had 11 cases; Brgy. 1 has 10. In Brgy. Canloterio, there were eight reported suspected cases. Brgy. 6 had six reported cases. Brgy. 2, 7 and San Gabriel had four cases each. Of this number, 44 were admitted in hospitals, of which 12 turned out to be positive for typhoid test, but no death however was recorded.

On May 11, 2012, the team aforementioned, headed by Julius Erving D. Ballera, RN(FETP Fellow) conducted an epidemiologic investigation to verify the existence of an outbreak, identify the source and mode of transmission and determine the risk factors and recommend control and preventive measures.

Also, they conducted an environmental investigation which unveiled that, somewhere in Purok 7, of barangay Maybocog, a water spring named ?Balalong? serves as the water source of these barangays.

Earlier, mayor Henry Afable mentioned that Balalong was developed in 1994 to supply water to the barangays of Maybocog. The water is pumped from the spring to the reservoir which is 100 meters up the source. From the reservoir, the water is distributed to three barangays: Maybocog and poblacion 1 to 7 for their drinking, swimming and for washing clothes and utensils. Then the spring flows out to the sea, some 150 meters away.

Another spring known to be ?Beto? is used for bathing only, laundry and washing utensils of the residents at Purok 1 of the same barangay and alongside this spring is a canal which serves as a sewage system of nearby households. There are about 40 public faucets located in Maybocog and some of the households connect to the faucet by attaching their own hose. There are however three deep wells that serve as alternative drinking water during high tides.

When the disease inflicted a good number of residents, Mayor Afable, through the Sangguniang Bayan (SB) approved a resolution that declared the municipality under the state of calamity and spent part of its calamity fund for the purchase of medicines and two Chlorinator pumps which were immediately installed at the Balalong Spring. Further, hyposols and aquatabs were distributed to households.

Sooner, the team indeed, found out, as indicated in their report dated May 17, 2012 that ?there was an ongoing suspect of typhoid outbreak in Maydolong?, that there was an epidemic outbreak which started on March 9 and peaked on April 1 to 5. The surveillance data from the RHU and RESU likewise disclosed that there was an unusual number of cases from January to May of 2009 to 2011; that Fecal-oral route was the mode of transmission, which in layman?s term would mean, people got the disease from water contaminated with waste.

In effect, the team recommended among others, (for short term solutions), a continued case finding and treatment and monitoring of cases, conduct of IEC campaigns and ensures the proper maintenance of machine chlorinators.

For long term solutions, the team listed for the LGU of Maydolong, to hire a permanent sanitary inspector, develop a new and safer water source and conduct of regular water sampling of all water sources and increase the number of houses with sanitary toilets.

Maydolong, a fourth class municipality has 20 barangays. These affected barangays are situated in the northern part of the town. Generally, it can be said that the rest of the barangays have safe water and sanitation systems, proof of which could be traced back to recent years, when the municipality was a regional winner for best practices in implementing the Materials Recovery Facility. cases in Guihulngan City

Doctors from the Department of Health Region 7 are investigating the upsurge of typhoid fever cases that started two weeks ago in Guihulngan City, Negros Oriental.

Sangguniang Panlalawigan Board member Liland Estacion, chair of the Committee on Health, said 34 patients are being treated in various hospitals, aside from unaccounted others who opted to seek treatment in private clinics and those who preferred herbal medicines.

The investigation will determine the cause of the typhoid fever epidemic in the city and the immediate course of action to be undertaken, Estacion said.

Initial investigation showed unsanitary sources of drinking water, like shallow wells, may have caused the outbreak.
