By JUAN O. TAMAYO | McClatchy Newspapers

MIAMI ? Cuban public health officials say the number of confirmed cholera cases has risen from 85 to 110 and advised residents of the worst-hit area, the southeastern province of Granma, to avoid traveling.

Meanwhile, a dissident journalist in Santiago de Cuba, the island's second largest city, reported that hospital workers there told him eight people had died from cholera in Santiago hospitals...

        Cholera in Cuba

        Released: July 11 2012
        Travel Health Notice

The Ministry of Public Health in Cuba has reported an increase in the number of cases of illness with diarrhea in some areas of the country due to high temperatures and heavy rainfall. The province with the highest incidence is Granma, with most cases being reported from the municipality of Manzanillo.

An investigation revealed that some of these cases are cholera. The city of Manzanillo has taken measures to control the situation and reduce the number of cases.

Cholerais an acute intestinal infection caused by the bacterium Vibrio cholerae. People usually become infected from drinking or eating contaminated water or food. It is associated with watery diarrhea and rapid dehydration, which can be life-threatening.

The Public Health Agency of Canada recommends practising safe food and water precautions while in Cuba.

        Recommendations

Consult a doctor, nurse or health care provider, or visit a travel health clinic preferably six weeks before you travel.
        1. Practise safe food and water precautions
        2. Consider getting vaccinated
          • Most travellers are at low risk. Travellers at high risk for cholera(travellers visiting areas of high risk with limited access to clean water and food) may benefit from vaccination and should consult a health care provider to discuss this option.
        3. If you develop severe diarrhea and/or vomiting when you return to Canada
          • Seek medical attention immediately.
          • Infants, young children and the elderly and those with underlying health conditions are at greatest risk of dehydration.
          • Drink fluids and use oral rehydration salts to prevent dehydration.

First cholera outbreak in Cuba since 19th century, ECDC rapid risk assessment

          13 Jul 2012 / ECDC

For the first time in almost 150 years, Cuba is reporting an outbreak of cholera. As of 12 July 2012, 85 cases of Vibrio cholerae were confirmed by the Cuban Ministry of Health.

Based on the available information at this stage, the outbreak appears to be mainly localised in the Granma province, in south-western Cuba, mostly in Manzanillo City. Despite control measures having been put in place by the Cuban health authorities, further cases within Cuba cannot be excluded at this stage.

ECDC has completed a rapid risk assessment to consider the risk for EU travellers travelling to Cuba to be infected with Vibrio cholerae. ECDC?s analysis is that the overall risk to European travellers to Cuba is low. Should the outbreak not spread beyond the Granma province, the risk of infection for European tourists visiting Cuba is negligible. If the outbreak spreads to other provinces, the risk of infection for European tourists should be reassessed. However, with appropriate precautionary measures, the overall risk of infection remains low, as is the risk for further spread of the infection upon return to Europe.

Visitors to Cuba should seek information the preventative measures they can take against cholera prior to travelling. Clinicians should keep the possibility of cholera in mind for travellers returning from Cuba who show clinical signs suggestive of this disease.

In 2010, there were approximately 810 000 European tourists, mostly from Italy, Spain, and Germany visiting Cuba. Around 58% of these tourists were visiting Cuba during the European winter months.

Globally, approximately 2.8 million cholera cases occur annually in endemic countries with nearly 91 000 deaths. In non endemic countries, the number of cases is estimated at 87 000 with 2 500 deaths. The major burden of cholera is located in southern Asia and Africa.

Cuba cholera cases now stand at 170 confirmed and eight more suspected

The total number of confirmed cholera cases in Cuba now stands at 170 while eight more cases are suspected.

The numbers on Cuba?s cholera outbreak continued to grow over the weekend, with officials reporting 12 new confirmed cases, bringing the total to 170, and eight new suspected cases in the southeastern province of Granma.

Cuba?s Public Health Ministry, in a statement published in the official news media on Saturday morning, declared that the outbreak was ?decreasing? with 158 confirmed cases and three deaths confirmed.

But the numbers provided by lead Granma province epidemiologist Ana Maria Batista during her appearance Friday, Saturday and Sunday evenings on provincial television showed increases in all the categories.

                Cholera cancels Cuban carnivals

HAVANA, Cuba, Friday July 20, 2012 ? Cuban authorities have suspended the traditional summer carnivals in the eastern cities of Bayamo and Manzanillo due to the outbreak of cholera in the region.

The annual celebrations, which were scheduled for August, were canceled "to avoid the spread of illnesses," according to a Communist Party official in Granma province.

While the cholera situation is said to be under control, authorities were concerned about possible contagion of the "floating population" attracted by the carnivals, a source in the Bayamo municipal government said.

The outbreak came to light last month in Manzanillo, a city of more than 130,000 people that has accounted for the majority of the 158 cases of cholera reported by Cuba's Public Health Ministry...

Twenty-seven cases were reported in the municipality of San Luis, in the eastern province of Santiago de Cuba, and 19 more in the Bahia Honda municipality 35 miles west of Havana.

The International Press Institute (IPI) is deeply concerned for the well-being of jailed Cuban journalist Calixto Ram?n Mart?nez, who has been on a hunger strike since Nov. 10 to protest prison conditions.

In a video statement released yesterday, Hablemos Press, the Havana-based independent news agency for which Mart?nez was a correspondent, said that the journalist was being held in Combinado del Este prison's ?Area 47?, known as the ?corridor of death? for its previous role in housing death-row inmates.

While information about Mart?nez's condition has been scarce, a Cuban political prisoner, Alexander Roberto Fern?ndez Rico, informed Hablemos Press in November that Mart?nez was being held naked in a ?punishment cell? and being given only a liter of water per day.

Mart?nez was arrested on Sept. 16 and later charged with insulting Fidel and Ram?n Castro under the country's ?contempt of authority? laws, known in the Spanish-speaking world as desacato. The journalist's arrest is thought to be releated to investigative coverage an outbreak of cholera and dengue fever on the island, though the Cuban government has provided no official explanation.

Nurses told him the test was negative, and the boy was not quarantined in the three wards reserved for cholera patients at the North Pediatric Hospital in the eastern city of Santiago de Cuba, Clavel said.

The Cuban government is saying little about reported cases of cholera.
