(博讯 boxun.com)

          Thanks!

They aren't reporting pneumonia, but it doesn't hurt to keep an eye on this.

Wait! CNN ASIA is reporting on the pigs right now. That is the first I have heard of it here. No new info though.

                  Mystery illness sparks pork scare
                  May 08 2007 at 12:13PM

Beijing - China ordered pork farmers on Tuesday to carry out mass vaccinations after a mysterious outbreak killed hundreds of pigs in the nation's south.

The agriculture ministry said it had urged stepped-up vaccinations for swine fever, pig rash and swine pneumonia and called on animal medical factories to increase production of medicines.

The directive was issued after up to 300 pigs in Guangdong province died over the last 10 days from a mystery disease that saw the pigs stop eating, develop fevers and begin hemorrhaging, the New Express paper reported.

Local farm bureaus were not immediately available for comment.

Yang Weixin, head of the township where the outbreak happened, told the paper there were up to 10 000 head of swine raised there and denied reports that up to 80 percent of the area's pigs had died.

"According to preliminary findings from local government and provincial experts a large-scale epidemic or an epidemic that can spread from animals to people has been ruled out," Yang said. "At present the disease has been controlled."

The epidemic has largely hit pigs being raised by individual farmers while industrial pig farms in the region, where health and sanitation conditions are better, have so far not reported any unusual outbreaks, the paper said.

The disease has caused a panic in the local areas as residents stopped buying pork for fear of eating tainted meat, it said.

Officials said there was no chance that tainted meat or sick pigs could find their way to markets in Hong Kong, which borders Guangdong.

Transport of live pigs from the affected area has been banned. - Sapa-AFP

China?s Pigs Dying from Unknown Cause
The WHO and other international health organizations have been informed that pigs in the Guangdong Province have been dying in large numbers from an unexplained cause.

The Hong Kong media is awash with gory tales of pigs with blood pouring from their bodies, peasants selling sick pigs cheap and deceased pig carcasses floating down rivers. Doctors are begging China to share any information they might have.

The international health community is afraid China may be covering up an epidemic like they did with SARS. "They definitely need to tell the public but also people in the city as to the extent of the outbreak,? said Dr. Kwok Ka-ki.

Hong Kong media were full of lurid accounts Monday of pigs staggering around with blood pouring from their bodies in Gaoyao and neighboring Yunfu, both in Guangdong Province. Apple, a daily newspaper here, said that up to 80 percent of the pigs had died in the area, that peasants were engaged in panic selling of ailing animals at deep discounts and that pig carcasses were floating down the river.

Medical experts said that the extent of the reported bleeding from the pigs, including bloody skin lesions, did not sound like common symptoms of bird flu, but added that the pig deaths needed to be investigated. Because pigs can be infected with many avian and human influenza viruses, the most popular scientific model for how avian influenza viruses cause pandemics in humans is that human and avian influenza viruses exchange genetic material when they infect a pig at the same time.

The above comments on the swine deaths in Guangdong province are cause for concern. Bleeding under the skin was common in the 1918 pandemic, and bleeding from the mouth has been frequently reported in bird and human H5N1 infections, including clusters in Thailand, Turkey, and Iraq.

Moreover, the only country to report H5N1 to a public database has been China (see list below). Several different strains of H5N1 have been reported in Guangdong province including Fujian, Qinghai, and the sequences from the Shantou geese.

The co-circulation of distinct strains also offers the opportunity for dual infections and recombination and the recent spread of the disease in swine coincides with increased migration.

It was almost exactly two years ago that the Qinghai stain was reported at Qinghai Lake in central China. The sequences in the Qinghai isolates had links to Shantou isolates.

The large number of dead swine should be investigated aggressively. The outbreak at Qinghai Lake in 2005 signaled a major extension of the geographical reach of H5N1, and intensive testing will be required to rule out H5N1 in these swine deaths. Involvement of H5N1 in these deaths would be a significant event in the evolution of H5N1, which is becoming increasingly complex as its geographical reach continues to spread.

A detailed investigation into the etiology of these swine deaths would be useful.

China Says Little About Pig Epidemic, Reminiscent of SARS Outbreak
                            By Luis Ramirez
                            Beijing, 08 May 2007

International health officials say the Chinese government has said little about an unidentified illness that has killed hundreds of hogs in southern China. VOA's Luis Ramirez reports from Beijing.

It was only after newspapers in Hong Kong reported the illness that the official media in mainland China mentioned the outbreak. Residents in southern China's Guangdong province say the disease, which apparently leads the animals to bleed to death, broke out as early as February, and has spread to more than 1,000 pigs. Information about the disease secret for months, until it spread across the border to Hong Kong, and on to other parts of Asia.

Guo Fusheng is a technical adviser at the United Nations' Food and Agriculture Organization office in Beijing. He said his agency is still awaiting word on the pig illness from the Chinese authorities.

"We discussed with the Ministry of Agriculture. They said they are going to (issue) a declaration. We got very limited information from them," he said.

Newspaper accounts speak of hundreds of pigs bleeding to death in Guangdong. News reports in southern China Tuesday said the government had ordered pig breeders to vaccinate their stocks, even though officials have yet to identify what is causing the disease.

Reports have quoted local residents as saying the mystery disease has killed as much as 80 percent of the hogs in the Gaoyao and Yunfu areas of Guangdong province. A newspaper quotes a local official as saying that figure is not true.

International health officials are monitoring the outbreak, since diseases seen in pigs can sometimes jump to people.

The World Health Organization has criticized the Chinese leadership for failing to hand over tissue samples in a timely manner of people and poultry infected with the H5N1 bird flu virus. The WHO was also critical of Beijing's hesitation in providing full information about the SARS outbreak.

HONG KONG (Reuters) - A disease that has wiped out as many as a million pigs in China in the past year is unlikely to spread to humans, leading veterinarians said on Wednesday.

Chinese officials have blamed the epidemic on Porcine Reproductive and Respiratory Syndrome (PRRS), or blue ear disease, which is caused by a virus in the arterivirus family.

"No, we have no indication whatsoever that that (spread to humans) can happen at all," said Albert Osterhaus, a virology expert at the Erasmus University Medical Centre in Rotterdam.

"There are a lot of viral infections that do occur in certain animal species and are restricted to that particular species, and of course you can never say that something could never happen," he said.

"But it is highly unlikely especially when the virus has been around in pigs for quite some time already. I don't think it is likely," said Osterhaus, a veterinarian by training.

According to a veterinarian at Hong Kong's Agriculture and Fisheries and Conservation Department, PRRS is a very common pig disease, and vaccines are available to prevent it.

PRRS was first recognized in the United States in the mid-1980s. The disease has cost the U.S. swine industry an estimated US$600 million each year.

The virus causes still-births, fever, loss of appetite, diarrhea, redness of the skin and mortality rates of up to 50 percent on some farms.

The ears of affected pigs turn blue
, thus giving it the household name "blue ear disease".

                              VIRUS WIDESPREAD

The virus accumulates in white blood cells in the lung tissues of pigs. The white blood cells would normally ingest and remove invading bacteria and viruses, but not in the case of the PRRS virus. Instead, the virus multiplies inside white blood cells and eventually kills them.

Although Beijing has not published any figures, Chinese industry officials say the disease has caused a million pig deaths since the first outbreak in southern Jiangxi province in May last year.

The disease, which China has blamed on a strain of the virus, has since spread to many provinces in the south and northeast.

Osterhaus said the spread probably had to do with the way pigs are raised, with the close proximity of farms in China.

"It depends largely on the way animals are being kept and the possibility of contact between different farms. The disease has been spreading quite intensively in the world, so I don't think from that point of view that China is in a particular (unique) situation," he told Reuters by telephone.

China's Disease Control Centre at the Ministry of Agriculture is working to find effective vaccines against the current strain of the virus in China, but that might not be easy because the virus mutates quickly, said an official at the centre.

China issued draft rules for pig slaughterhouses to protect people's health and the quality of pork products on Wednesday.

Slaughterhouses must be licensed and approved by local governments and environmental bureau, and must be located away from drinking water supplies, residential districts and public areas, the Ministry of Commerce said on its Web site.

I thought it was "pig high fever disease".this new story about PRRS doesn't tell why the pigs in previous stories are bleeding from everywhere and floating down rivers.I think this story is.......IMHO.
