About the NINE people serologically tested H5N1 positive:

    (...)
South Korea has never reported any human H5N1 cases or deaths, but in September 2006 health officials said five workers who helped cull poultry during outbreaks in 2003 had antibodies to the H5N1 virus but had never had symptoms.

The 2006 report brought the total number of South Korean poultry workers who tested positive for H5N1 antibodies to nine.

Tests on the workers' samples were done at the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Tests have shown that the virus detected in the patient??s body was an H5 strain, according to the Korea Center for Disease Control and Prevention. It will take up to three weeks for a lab to confirm whether or not the strain is the deadly H5N1 strain, which has caused massive outbreaks in the Jeolla region since April 1.
The young corporal, identified only by his family name Cho, was sent to help kill infected chickens and ducks on Friday and Saturday. He suffered from high fever and was transported to an army hospital Sunday.
Authorities said his sickness was not related to the bird flu and that his condition has improved.
According to the World Health Organization, only four out of hundreds of strains of avian influenza viruses are known to have caused human infections ? H5N1, H7N3, H7N7 and H9N2.
??In general, human infection with these viruses has resulted in mild symptoms and very little severe illness, with one notable exception: the highly pathogenic H5N1 virus,?? according to the WHO. There have been is no confirmed human cases in Korea of H5N1.
??Following the initial examination of Cho, a small amount of H5 virus was detected,?? CDCP head Lee Jong-ku said in a media briefing at the Health Ministry yesterday. ??Since his condition is normal now, we believe that the virus did not cause serious harm.??
Cho had shown high fever and coughing even before his unit was assigned to the poultry slaughter mission last week, Lee said. He added that bacteria caused the soldier??s illness.
Dr. Park Seung-cheol of Samsung Medical Center, who had examined Cho, said the patient suffered from respiratory complications and high fever.
??I concluded that the symptoms were not caused by an avian influenza virus infection, ?? he said.
The Defense Ministry said all soldiers were withdrawn from the slaughter sites as of 3 p.m. yesterday.
Also yesterday North Korea said it will ban South Korean poultry and eggs from an inter-Korean industrial zone, according to the Unification Ministry.
The North informed the South that the move will take effect Saturday.

            In summary, the corporal has:
-- clinical presentation compatible with WHO case definition for H5N1 human infection (...Corporal Jo is a member of WHO (World Health Organization) regulations' AI suspected patients' will be included...; post #33); and
            -- preliminary tests results detected H5 genetic material in samples; (...Following the initial examination of Cho, a small amount of H5 virus was detected...; post #32);
            -- a bacterial super-infection.

No data about mode of exposure, adherence to PPE wearing, and no details on treatments and current health status. Also, the soldier chemoprophylaxis status not mentioned at this point. No data about seasonal human vaccination.

I think the H5 genetic material description is just like the H5 description for the poultry. There have been no reports of H5 other than HPAI H5 or H5N! and the soldier was culling, so there is little doubt that this is an H5N1 infection (although it may be a mild infection similar to infections in Egypt last year).

I suspect the mild H5N1 infections are MUCH more widespread than reported (including India and Bangladesh).

                Hi ironorehopper

Hospitals and medical staff have also been taking treatment Tamiflu, in case of any incident. ( post one from treyfish )

So I think the soldier is taking tamiflu, and I read in a post from dutchy that he is taking antibiotics
( The release said the soldier??s condition improved after he received antibiotics and that everyone who had contact with him were also given medicine and will be monitored for 10 days )

it could be an avian flu ( because 2 tests > 0 ) AND a bacterial pneumonia.

It is also to be noted that recently Pakistani patients were confirmed positive by serology in presence of atypical H5N1 clinical presentation.

Disease management is the primary screening test headquarters separated from the patient gageommul antigen gene amplification (PCR) tests have been positive results, he said. Gabriel gobyeongwonseongin type H5 virus was found.

Advisory Committee Chairman night, "AI infection, such as fever and cough symptoms are excessive bacterial infection symptoms," "shallow, or bacterial pyeryeomil, AI virus, a bacterial infection, but in a separate proceeding would likely be separate report," he said. Patients will be put in operation before salcheobun showed symptoms of the flu jeomeseoda.

Chairman of the advisory night, "This is not a result of cell culture hwakjin through the PCR results confirm once again," "The World Health Organization (WHO) is currently a patient's AI bunryusang classified as suspected patients, but ultimately it is not confirmed." .

WHO has finalized the patient in three stages according to AI. AI was first exposed to the virus, symptoms of fever and pneumonia patients classified as suspicious, and if you see AI, since genetic tests (PCR) amplification, and the best AI AI virus positive patients classified as presumed. AI virus is a virus or antibodies final separation from the antibody tests, the increase is more than four times the hwakjinhwanja AI. Disease management is finalized headquarters was expected to take up to 1-3 weeks....

Well. He meets clinical and laboratory results for a confirmed human case of H5N1. In addition, chemoprophylaxis and prompt hospital admission may result in a more favorable outcome.

The 22-year-old man, identified only by his surname Cho, is suspected of having contracted the virus at a farm in Sunchang, North Jeolla Province. He had taken part in culling operations there to dispose of poultry likely to have been infected with the bird flu.

The Korea Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (KCDCP) said the H-Five-type virus, which causes the bird flu, was found in the soldier's blood sample.

The KCDCP said the H-Five-type virus is not usually found in humans, raising the possibility that the soldier may have been infected.

Authorities said a second test is under way, but it will take one to three weeks for the results.

They said Cho had a mild cold before participating in the culling operations. They did not rule out the possibility of viral pneumonia. http://english.kbs.co.kr/news/newsvi...key=2008042213
