Re: Confirmed/Suspected Cases in New York State outside NYC

I was trying to link cases to the St.Francis school outbreak
which is supposed to have begun with the return of Cancun
    travelers on 20.April

But now I learned that there were other introductions linked
    to Cancun-travelers,
e.g. the first case in Georgia and a Scottish couple and a Bavarian woman
and 13 students from Newberry,SC and students from Sacramento,CA

That virus is very characteristic with 11 mutation-markers.
About 1/3 of all uploaded M**flu viruses are this strain.

It has surprisingly many mutations for mid-April M**flu,
most of which are non-synonymous, indicating adaption to humans.

It also appears in Ohio 22.April, California 20.April, Massachussets ~25.April,
    Nebraska ~25.Apr.,Virginia~25.Apr
    Brisbane,Bayern,Moscow,Toronto,Finland,Tennessee,N ew Jersey,Nevada

All these viruses probably descended from one common ancestor virus
which seems to have been in Cancun

the Monroe County case (3007) has 2 additional markers
which links it to the first Ohio case and:

    Code:

Al and gsgs, thanks for the helpful observations The H1N1 storyline has become so convoluted with disinformation that anything that can shed some light on the subject is much appreciated.

        News updates for 6/3/09:

Reported by the Ithaca Journal in Ithaca, NY::

Second case of swine flu confirmed in Tompkins County. The unidentified adult is recovering at home, and the county health department declined to give any more information about the case. Area schools have not been affected and will remain open.

        Quote from the article:
(Theresa) Lyczko, public information officer for the county health department, says additional cases may be discovered as the department continues its focus on surveillance, but that the county health department does not anticipate sending further suspected cases for confirmation testing unless there is cause for concern, such as clustered incidents.
        http://www.theithacajournal.com/arti...ed+in+Tompkins

Reported by the Times Herald Record in Albany, NY:

Monroe-Woodbury Middle School experiencing high levels of flu-like illness, with twice as many absences as usual. 210 students stayed home on Tuesday and others left classes early because of sickness. The typical number of absences at the school is 80-100.

        Quote from the article:
The district has no confirmed cases of swine flu, although the state has stopped testing for that strain in Orange County unless the patient has been hospitalized.
(School Superintendent Joe) DiLorenzo, who posted a letter on the district Web site Monday, said the district is cleaning school surfaces and has postponed concerts and sports this week as a precaution. The county Health Department has not advised closing the school, he said.

*** this "not going to test, not going to release information" theme is popping up in more and more press statements from county health departments. reading between the lines, it appears to me to be a trickle down policy coming from the state.

Re: Confirmed/Suspected Cases in New York State outside NYC

          News update 6/3/09:

First Death in New York outside NYC

Reported by Newswatch 50 in Watertown, NY:

Health officials say an adult in Onondaga County is the first person outside New York City to die of swine flu.

Onondaga County Health Commissioner Dr. Cynthia Morrow says the resident had underlying medical conditions. She says officials aren't identifying the patient at the family's request and to protect their privacy. The person died recently in a hospital and the state confirmed the death Tuesday night.

To date, Onondaga County has had 42 confirmed cases of H1N1, including three hospitalizations. The flu has stricken students in Syracuse and five other neighboring school districts.

State officials reported 780 confirmed cases of the H1N1 virus as of Tuesday, including cases in Jefferson County and Lewis County.

At least seven people infected with the virus have died in New York City.

          http://www.newswatch50.com/news/loca...ZPvuCtIhg.cspx

Reported by WSYR Channel 9 in Syracuse, NY:

Person Dies from H1N1 Flu in Onondaga County

(Text from the full article is copyrighted, but here is the important part...)

Dr. Cynthia Morrow, Onondaga county health commissioner, reports that the victim was an adult with underlying health problems, hospitalized at the time of death. No information will be released about the age, sex, or other circumstances surrounding the death. Results from the State Health Department came back positive on Tuesday night. Onondaga County Health Department will not be changing their policies regarding H1N1, and Morrow expects the virus to "peak" within the next few weeks.

From the NYS Department of Health Website:

6/3/09 Statement by Governor David A. Paterson:

“It is with deep sadness that we learn that New York has lost an Onondaga County resident to an illness related to the H1N1 influenza. On behalf of all New Yorkers, I extend my sincere condolences and prayers to his family and friends during their time of grief.

“As more cases of H1N1 are identified in New York State, unfortunately, we expect some cases to be fatal, especially for those who contract the virus and have underlying medical conditions. This is consistent with what we see during our influenza season each year. Annually, there are approximately 2,000 deaths in New York State from seasonal influenza and an estimated 36,000 deaths nationwide.

“The New York State Department of Health (DOH) remains on heightened alert to respond to the H1N1 (swine flu) outbreak. Again, I want to emphasize that all New Yorkers should continue to adhere to the precautionary measures that we have recommended since this outbreak first began. These simple precautionary measures include:
          • Washing your hands often with soap and warm water. Alcohol-based hand cleansers are also effective.
          • Avoiding people who are ill, if possible.
          • Staying home from work or school if you are sick.
          • Using tissue when you cough, sneeze or spit, and dispose of the tissue in a covered trash bin.
          • Keeping hands away from your face. Avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth.
          • Cleaning shared space more often such as phone receivers, keyboards, steering wheels and office equipment.
          • Refraining from sharing personal items such as forks, spoons, toothbrushes and towels.”

Re: Confirmed/Suspected Cases in New York State outside NYC

Reported by the Press & Sun Bulletin in Binghamton, NY:

2nd swine flu case confirmed in Broome County. Although it is unknown how the the virus was contracted, the person recently travelled downstate. As in the first Broome County case, the symptoms were mild and the person has recovered.

            Quote from the article:
As in the first reported case, local health officials would not release information on the latest patient's age, residence, place of employment or how many others have been exposed.
"According to a state health department directive, we aren't to release any information on the patient," (Supervising Public Health Educator Diane) O'Hora said.
            http://www.pressconnects.com/article...rted+in+Broome

**** Okay, can we officially call b.s. on "protecting the privacy of the family during this difficult time"? I'm all for privacy, no names need be mentioned. But releasing no information at all, not even age or "underlying health condition" on H1N1 cases is a STATE POLICY. Even with fatalities.

Re: Confirmed/Suspected Cases in New York State outside NYC

                  News updates for 6/4/09:

Reported by the Post Standard in Syracuse, NY:

Onondaga County now has the most lab-confirmed cases per capita in the state, higher even than New York City. In NYC, there are 6.7 cases per 100,000 people, and in Onondaga County there are 9.3 cases per 100,000 people ranging in age from under 1 to 55 years old. Dr. Cynthia Morrow says the higher per capita rate is partially explained by more testing in Onondaga than other communities.

                  Quote from the article:
That's because there is a lab at SUNY Upstate Medical University that can conduct tests on samples from patients and determine if they have a type of flu different from the regular seasonal flu, Morrow said. Lab results that indicate a different type of flu are then sent to the state Health Department's lab in Albany, which can tell if the virus is swine flu, also known as H1N1.
"Because of the advantage we have of having a very capable lab in our community, that artificially increases our numbers," Morrow said.
Beyond the extra testing, the cause for Onondaga's relatively high caseload remains a bit of a mystery...
...Tim Dye, a professor of public health and preventive medicine at SUNY Upstate, said he suspects other highly populated counties in the state with far fewer confirmed cases per capita are underreporting. He cited Monroe County, which has five confirmed cases, and Albany County, which has just one.
"We probably have a more accurate count of what's going on in (Onondaga) county," Dye said.
The county reported 10 new cases of swine flu Wednesday, six children and four adults. Three of the newest cases are in schools where the virus had not been previously detected: Elmwood Elementary and Dr. Weeks Elementary, in Syracuse, and the Roxboro Road Middle School, in North Syracuse.

                  http://www.syracuse.com/business/ind...l=1&thispage=2

Reported by the Democrat and Chronicle in Rochester, NY:

3 cases of confirmed flu reported in Ontario County, with an unspecified number of other suspected cases under investigation by Ontario County officials. The rest of this article, although dated 6/3, reports old numbers for Monroe County... "as of 6/1 ... 3 cases in Monroe County" and also fails to mention the 2 recently confirmed cases in neighboring Livingston County.

                  http://www.democratandchronicle.com/...3034/1002/NEWS

Reported by Newsday.com covering Long Island:

According to Mayor Bloomberg, swine flu cases appear to be on the decline in New York City. Flu-related visits to NYC emergency rooms have declined a third since last week, and school attendance is nearly normal after weeks of high absenteeism, health officials said Wednesday. Meanwhile, cases continue to rise slightly on Long Island.

                  Quote from the article:
Nassau's cases are dispersed throughout the county with no reports of one school district or area being particularly hard hit, said Mary Ellen Laurain, a Nassau health department spokeswoman.

In Suffolk, most cases are in the west, but "are not localized to one school district or one town. The virus is ubiquitous," said Dr. Humayun Chaudhry, Suffolk's health commissioner. All flu victims have recovered or are recovering, the county officials said.
In addition to the Sequoya Middle School student with a confirmed case, the "probable case" in the same school district has been identified as a student of Sachem High School North in Lake Ronkonkoma.

A greater number of staff have also been absent, some reporting flu symptoms and fever, although no figures were given. The school remains open.

In Suffolk County a student at Westhampton Beach Learning Center, part of the Eastern Suffolk BOCES, tested positive for swine flu. The student has not been in school since May 28 and is recovering at home. The facility, which serves children with special needs, will remain open.

There is also a confirmed case at the middle school in the William Floyd district of Suffolk County. The school buildings and buses are being sanitized as a precaution, but the school will remain open.

Most of the sick students are ninth and tenth graders who attend Riverside's School 51 on Hertel Avenue. Eleventh and twelfth graders attend Riverside's Ontario Street campus. Both campuses will be closed until Tuesday.

Local healthcare facilities are seeing patients and diagnosing H1N1 based on symptoms. The majority of the cases are mild and are being treated like seasonal flu, and the health department is not routinely testing these mild cases. Officials are not advising schools or businesses in the county be closed, since the illness is all ready community-wide.

Inmate in Syracuse jail confirmed with swine flu

SYRACUSE, N.Y. - Officials say a jail inmate in Syracuse has the swine flu, and that's causing concern among deputies and inmates that they could be exposed.

Jail officials say the 34-year-old male inmate remains in the Onondaga County Justice Center's general population. But he's only allowed out of his cell when other inmates are in theirs. His illness is one of 49 confirmed cases in the county, which has so far recorded the state's only H1N1-related death outside of New York City.

Chief Custody Deputy Richard Carbery says the jail is following the federal Centers for Disease Control's protocols to keep inmates and deputies safe from exposure.

State health officials reported 866 confirmed cases as of Thursday. Seven deaths in New York City have been linked to the infection.

Reported by the Lower Hudson Journal News in White Plains, NY

Swine Flu Could Be on the Rise in Rockland

RAMAPO - Schools throughout Rockland are seeing a rise in the number of students out sick with flulike symptoms, and health officials suspect that many of those children have the swine flu, a disease that has been fairly mild as it spreads through the region. The total number of confirmed cases of the illness in Rockland remains at eight, according to the state Department of Health.

But the real number of people ill with the virus is probably much higher, officials said. "We know that the H1N1 flu virus is widespread in the county," said Kathleen Henry, deputy director of the Rockland Department of Health.
The county will not disclose any information about the confirmed cases - including where those people live, officials said.

The state Department of Health, which conducts the testing, gives that information to the county and leaves it up to the local officials to release it. According to the state department, officials are not permitted to give out information that would enable patients to be identified, such as an individual's name or a street address.

But there is nothing in state regulations that would prevent officials from disclosing what town or community a person lives in as long as that information would not enable the person to be identified
                                , a spokeswoman said.

Swine flu is being reported throughout the state. There were 930 confirmed cases as of Friday, according to the state Department of Health. Two children in Mahopac last week became the first people in Putnam County with the illness. There have been 36 confirmed cases in Westchester, including residents of Yonkers, Port Chester, Scarsdale, Rye, Tarrytown and New Rochelle.

Suffern pediatrician Janice Montague said she started to see an unusually high number of young patients with fever, sore throat, runny nose, body ache and cough early last week.

.... and here's the Star Gazette trying to follow up with more information on the Steuben case. Compare this article to the one above....
Reported by The Star Gazette in Elmira, NY:

Swine case confirmed in Steuben Youngster

A Steuben County child has the H1N1 virus, more commonly known as swine flu, the county Public Health and Nursing Department announced Friday. The child is recovering at home, according to a press release from the department. The department says it is notifying individuals who have had close contact with the child and educating them about the virus.

However, Lorellie Evans, public health educator and public information officer, said the department is not allowed to release other information about the child, including if he or she is of school age and where the youngster lives.

She said there are no other suspected cases of the virus in Steuben, as the county has received all test results back from the state.

Now that one case of the virus has been confirmed, the state's guidelines for reporting suspect cases from the county become stricter, Evans said. Only cases involving hospitalization in which the patient also tests positive for Influenza A or an unknown type of influenza will be sent to the state for further testing, she said.

"We no longer need to know it's here; we know it's here," Evans said.

Symptoms of H1N1 include fever over 100, cough, sore throat, body aches, headache, chills, fatigue, and some people have reported diarrhea and vomiting, which are not usual symptoms of seasonal flu. People are advised to use common sense to avoid the virus such as covering their mouth when they cough, washing hands frequently, throwing used tissues into the trash and avoiding close contact people who are ill.
