I'd give a lot to find out if the totals were in referance to the 6,000 number or the 140,000 number?
If you counted only those patients who were hospitalized for influenza in the US, which I totally think is what Thailand is basing their numbers on, you would get a much higher mortality rate too. I totally think that Thailand has a far higher rate of H5N1 than it thinks, and I also don't think that the mortality rate is anywhere near the 55% level touted by everyone, but at the same time, these numbers are meaningless. These hospitals and clinics likely also have categories for "diarrhea", "encephalitis", "dengue hemorrhagic fever", "pneumonia", "severe cold", "respiratory infection", "mysterious illness" "unknown fever", "unknown typhoid". H5N1 could be mistaken for all of these categories, so how is anyone supposed to know what the real numbers are.

Theresa, there's a report dated today, over at Manager Online which mentions the 300 'flu' cases alongside Avian Flu. I can't really make any sense of it as my skills aren't up to it. Could you take a look please?

Thailand Alert for Bird Flu Is Expanded

Thailand Alert for Bird Flu Is Expanded

BANGKOK, Aug. 5 (Reuters) ? A 27-year-old Thai man has died of bird flu, the country?s second death from the disease this year, officials said Saturday, as they put eight more provinces, including the Bangkok area, on a watch list.

The man died on Thursday after the A(H5N1) virus killed chickens on his backyard farm in Uthai Thani Province, 135 miles north of Bangkok, and the third province to have an outbreak since the virus re-emerged in July after an eight-month lull.

?He buried them without any protection, and that?s why he caught bird flu,? Thawat Suntrajarn, chief of the Department of Disease Control, said of Thailand?s 16th victim since the disease swept through parts of Asia in late 2003.

Bird flu killed at least 134 people worldwide before this latest death, according to the World Health Organization.

Since the death of a Thai teenager in late July, Thailand has rushed to plug gaps in its bird flu defenses.

The area around the sprawling Thai capital was among eight provinces declared bird flu risk zones on Saturday, increasing the total to 29 of Thailand?s 76 provinces.

Agriculture Minister Sudarat Keyuraphan said local officials would go on a door-to-door campaign to educate villagers on how to handle sick or dead poultry.

A new call center will take reports of suspicious poultry deaths and answer questions about the disease.

The government has threatened fines of up to about $100 or two months in jail for failing to report sick or dead birds.

The outbreaks in Thailand and neighboring Laos, where bird flu was found on a farm last month, renewed fears that the disease is flaring up again in Asia.

In Vietnam, where no cases have been confirmed in poultry or humans this year, the authorities are taking no chances. Animal health workers slaughtered 53 wild storks at a theme park in Ho Chi Minh City on Saturday after random tests showed H5, part of the A(H5N1) virus, in two birds.

In Indonesia, tests confirmed six suspected human cases were not bird flu, an official said.

Report from Coordinating Center for Laboratory Testing & Surveillance

Here is a report that SolitaireUK found (hat-tip, Sol!) from the Coordinating Center for Laboratory Testing and Surveillance in Thailand:

It lists flu test results from (apparently) throughout the country on (I think) tests done in the last couple of days (from August 1 and onwards from what I can make out). The machine-translation is a bit crazier than usual, unfortunately, because the original text is written in a northern Thai dialect and the machine-translator has a hard time with it.

                  The original report is here:

The announcement has revealed a discrepancy in information coming from the ministry and the Department of Livestock Development (DLD).
Pinij Charusombat, the Public Health Minister, on Saturday announced that a 27-year-old man from Uthai Thani's Sawang Arom district who died on Thursday was killed by the H5N1 virus. The announcement was based on the results of laboratory tests conducted by the Medical Science Department and Siriraj Hospital.
It was the second instance of a human confirmed case in an area where the DLD's laboratory tests showed chickens had tested negative for the virus.
"We are doubtful. We don't understand how people can be infected with the virus when our lab tests showed chickens there were not infected with H5N1," said Nirundorn Aungtrakulsook, director of the DLD's Animal Epidemic Control and Veterinary Division.
The DLD was still insisting that Nong Bua Lamphu's Na Klang sub-district and Phichit's Bang Mun Nak district were the only two areas in the country where the virus had been detected in chickens.
The department also said that chickens in Phichit's Thab Khlo district - where the first human case this year was confirmed - were negative to the virus.
The DLD's director general, Yukol Limlamthong, insisted that the whole province of Uthai Thani was clear of the virus.
Nirundorn said there were no reports about mysterious deaths of chickens in Uthai Thani's Sawang Arom district. He claimed that livestock officials in the province had been informed about the death of three chickens in a house there last month and they collected the bodies for tests, which proved negative.
He said livestock officials visited the same house again on Thursday after learning about the culling of seven more chickens. These were also tested and again, he insisted, the results were negative.
He encouraged the Public Health Ministry to investigate how the two human victims could have been exposed to the virus.
Dr Thawat Sunthrajarn, director general of the Public Health Ministry's Disease Control Department, denied making a comment on the information from the DLD. He only said jokingly, "it [the virus] might come from nowhere."
Thawat said medical doctors never rely on the information of the DLD during a surveillance programme for any endemic disease.
"Bird flu is like dengue fever in that they are both endemic diseases and the virus can exist anywhere and can be active when the conditions are right. For us, any place that reports mass chicken deaths with unclear reasons, we assume it is a bird-flu area. We don't wait for the lab tests of the DLD," he said in a telephone interview yesterday.
Dr Pratch Boonyawongviroj, permanent secretary of the Public Health Ministry, said the latest victim became sick on July 24 after burying his dead chickens on July 17. He went to see a doctor on July 27 and was tested with a bird-flu rapid-test kit. The result was negative.
On July 30 the man went to the Sawang Arom hospital with symptoms that appeared the same as those caused by bird flu. But a laboratory test again confirmed that he was negative for the virus.
The next day, doctors decided to give him oseltamivir, an anti-viral drug that can be used to treat bird flu, and transferred him to Uthai Thani provincial hospital, where he died on Thursday. According to caretaker Health Minister Phinij Jarusombat, who inspected bird flu-infected areas in Uthai Thani province yesterday, the latest victim fell sick last Thursday and was admitted to Uthai Thani provincial hospital on Saturday. The results of tests to verify whether the unidentified man is actually infected with the deadly H5N1 virus are expected to be known today.

Phinij said the man, who was working on a chicken farm with 20,000 birds in Uthai Thani?s Muang district, might have contracted the disease after burying dead birds late last month while not wearing protective gear.

The minister said he had given strict instructions to about 800,000 public health volunteers throughout the country to inform villagers to exercise extreme caution when handling dead birds. ?Villagers should not handle dead birds. But if they have to, they must wear rubber gloves or several layers of plastic bags?and they must absolutely not eat any sick or dead birds,? Phinij said.

Starting today, the ministry will also launch a national cleanliness campaign that encourages people to wash their hands frequently.

The third suspected human case came after the minister confirmed on Saturday that a 27-year-old man who died last Thursday in Uthai Thani?s Sawang Arom district had succumbed to the H5N1 virus, making him the second person to have died of the disease this year. The first case was reported in Phichit province on July 26.

Public Health permanent secretary Dr Prat Boonyawongvirot said in light of the latest outbreak in Uthai Thani, the provincial hospital there has now been equipped with special facilities to handle suspected bird flu patients and test for the virus. He added that public health volunteers had been instructed to monitor the symptoms of any unwell villagers and report their findings every morning.

Dr Prat added that the ministry would no longer issue daily reports on suspected patients who are under medical surveillance as there are too many of them and the list of names changes daily. He said the ministry will only issue announcements when bird flu or serious human influenza cases are confirmed.

Meanwhile, the directorgeneral of the Disease Control Department, Dr Thawat Suntrajarn, said Bangkok-based medical experts met with provincial doctors yesterday and mapped out plans to speed up the handling of suspected human bird-flu cases.

Patients suffering from fever and cough who are known to have handled sick or dead birds will be given oseltamivir phosphate, a generic version of Roche Pharmaceuticals? Tamiflu that is now being produced locally, even if initial tests are negative, he said.

According to Dr Thawat, 80 people, mainly Uthai Thani provincial hospital staff or villagers living in the vicinity of the second victim, are currently undergoing 14 days of medical surveillance after receiving the local version of Tamiflu.

I am feeling apprehensive re: the situation in Thailand. And this quote from post #59 doesn't help.
