JAKARTA, Indonesia (AP) - A 3-year-old boy in Indonesia died from bird flu, the health ministry said Wednesday as the death toll in the country hardest hit by the disease climbed to 108.
The toddler from Central Java province first showed flu-like symptoms _ high fever and breathing difficulties _ on April 17. He died five days later after being admitted to a local hospital, ministry spokeswoman Lily Sulistyowati said.
Two laboratory tests came back positive for the H5N1 virus, and health investigators found the child ?had a history of contact with dead poultry,? she said.
Indonesia has regularly recorded human deaths from bird flu since the virus began ravaging poultry stocks across Asia in 2003. Its toll of 108 accounts for nearly half the 240 recorded fatalities worldwide.
Bird flu remains hard for people to catch, but health experts worry that the virus could mutate into a form that passes easily between humans, possibly triggering a pandemic that could kill millions. So far most human cases have been linked to contact with infected birds.
Scientists have warned that Indonesia, which has millions of backyard chickens and poor medical facilities, is a potential hot spot for the start of a global pandemic.Comment

30 April 2008 -- </SPAN>The Ministry of Health of Indonesia has announced a new case of human infection of H5N1 avian influenza. A 3-year-old male from Wonogiri District, Central Java Province developed symptoms on 14 April, was hospitalized on 21 April and died on 23 April. Indonesia's 3-Year Old Boy Is The Latest Bird Flu Victim
Jakarta, April 28, 2008 - Ministry of Health -
Exposure to sick birds remains the primary source of human infection with Bird Flu.
MS, a 3 year old boy from Bero Village in Manyaran sub district, Wonogiri district in Central Java had direct contact with dead chicken before he got sick.
MS experienced onset of illness on April 17 2008 with symptom of breathing difficulties. He was then taken to Muwardi Hospital in Solo on April 23 2008 but he passed away that day.
Test results from the Health Research and Development Center of the Ministry of Health and Eijkman Institute then confirmed that MS was positively infected by the H5N1 virus.
The investigation team from Ministry of Agriculture and Ministry of Health are doing field investigation. It was known that 10 chickens died suddenly in his neighborhood.

"Desa", often translated as village, is an administrative level (4) below a subdistrict (Kecamatan). Dusun Bero, in this case, refers to a "village" or "hamlet" within Desa Bero.
