I'm certain Appleblossom's work is going to start getting really crazy. If you would be willing to create a new thread with that kind of summary, that would be awesome. I've taken on hospitalizations by state, which is a exercise in frustration, but as the deaths increase, we might have to divide up duties by region if we want to continue to post the most current information. Also, additional threads summarizing various data, such as what you are looking for, will become more and more useful. Any thoughts?

State, Number of deaths, Avg age of decedents, Percentage of decedents w/underlying conditions

      Arizona: 10 deaths, Average age 33, 50% w/underlying conditions

I think that kind of a summary would be helpful, but I understand that it could be a bit misleading (e.g., I could only use 6 of the 10 cases in Arizona to figure the average age).

No, we don't have a list like that. But that's a great idea. I'm already at the limit of what I can contribute here, but I say if anyone has different notions of how the data should be organized, please do start a new thread. It would be interesting to see.

Here are a few more details (pitifully few) on the Sonoma County death in California. It all sounds so "cloak and dagger" to me.

According to the June 29th article, the man died on June 26th.
An elderly man who died at an unnamed Sonoma County hospital last Friday is suspected of having the H1N1 flu, marking the first death related to the virus in the county.

The Sonoma County Department of Public Health has remained tight-lipped on the details surrounding the death. Sonoma County Health Officer Dr. Mary Maddux-Gonz?lez would only say that the man was under treatment for a pre-existing medical condition at the time of his death. "We are saddened by the death of a member of our community and our thoughts and sympathies go out to his family and friends," Maddux-Gonz?lez said in a press release.

The department would not name the hospital the man was treated at or the city where he lived. According to Public Health officials, the man was experiencing flu-like symptoms consistent with the H1N1 virus prior to his death, which caused hospital officials to send a culture to the County Public Health Lab for testing. Results on Monday showed that the man had a probable case of H1N1 virus, meaning the tests showed it was likely but the virus strain will still need to be confirmed by the State Public Health Laboratory.

How's this for cloak and dagger? California is reporting 4 new deaths on their DPH website.

              http://www.cdph.ca.gov/data/statisti...ataTables.aspx

Newest deaths are 1 in San Mateo county, 2 in Orange county, and 1 in Santa Clara county. State total is reported as 23, but our unique CA reports come to 24. I'm getting 3 deaths in San Diego county, CA DPH is reporting only 2.

They are also reporting only 1 death in Sonoma County, but the earlier details I have on the elderly man who died don't match those in the article Jim put up. The new article says he died 6/26, and I have an earlier report that the elderly Sonoma County man died 6/19/09.

I'm pretty sure that the three you listed in San Diego County are all unique cases that have been correctly identified. I'm not sure what to make of the case or cases in Sonoma County. I suppose that they could have gotten the dates mixed up and reported the same case with two different timelines, given the "tight-lippedness" of the County Health Dept. For now, maybe we should show one confirmed and one suspected case.

The only other possibility that I can think of is that case #19 was attributed to the wrong county and is one of the elderly men reported from Sonoma County. But that still gives us one more than the State.

Ok, now to confuse things further...
On June 20, an elderly man with ?multiple underlying, chronic conditions? was the first person in Sonoma County to die after becoming ill with swine flu. The man had been hospitalized a week before he died.

Local public health officials continue to monitor recent outbreaks, including one at Camp Newman-Swig on Porter Creek Road, where a number of camp staff became ill with flu-like symptoms. The camp re-opened as planned on Thursday.

Two other outbreaks occurred earlier this month at Sonoma Developmental Center and at a local skilled nursing facility.

There have been 10 confirmed and 28 probable cases of swine flu in Sonoma County, with the one death, officials said Friday.

June 19, June 20, and June 26. It sounds like two different people a week apart.

This article was published on June 19th, which means the June 20th death is probably incorrect and it can't be reporting a death that occurred on the 26th, unless they've discovered time travel.
An elderly man with pre-existing medical conditions has become Sonoma County?s first probable swine flu fatality, Dr. Mary Maddux-Gonz?lez, county health officer, announced Friday.

The man died Friday at a local hospital, Maddux-Gonz?lez said in a statement. No other information about the patient was provided.

The case was determined to be a probable H1N1 influenza based on laboratory testing Thursday at the Sonoma County Public Health lab, authorities said.

Here's more info on David Twomey, the man we have listed as Washington DC's first death. I think he may actually be the 2nd Virginia death that was announced yesterday - he lived in Alexandria and died at Virginia Hospital Center, which is in Arlington.

Virginia Man Dies of Complications Related to Swine Flu
Alexandria, Va. - Local residents are shocked and saddened after sources confirmed a young Alexandria resident died Tuesday due to complications related to swine flu.

Friends say 27-year-old David Twomey had two passions in life -- communications and politics. His father told a reporter he designed his first Web site in the eighth grade for his elementary school. The news that Twomey died from complications related to swine flu has hit many people hard.

At his Alexandria apartment complex, there were no memorials for Twomey but words of caring and concern came from his neighbors.

Neighbor Robert Morlan was among those who was saddened the H1N1 Virus would take the life of someone so young. "I'm shocked," he said. "You always think it's somebody else, it's somewhere else."

Twomey died Tuesday at Virginia Hospital Center. Sources say he fell ill June 24 and lab tests confirmed besides the swine flu virus, Twomey also had strep throat and a staph infection.

"Usually it's the elderly or the very young. But now it's people in their twenties so it is kind of scary," said Brooke Morris, an Arlington resident.

Twomey's Facebook page is filled with messages of sadness but also memories of good times. A native of Portland, Maine, Twomey moved to the D.C. area in 2007 where he worked for the EPA and the federal courts in public affairs.

"Whenever you lose a life in your complex, it's a life lost. [It] hits the community," said Maurice Snipe, a neighbor.

While it's shocking, it's also a tragic wake up call. Morris, who says she's researched the H1N1 Virus, has concerns about what may happen when flu season hits.

"It's going to be interesting to see how this strain kind of -- how it all pans out. I think it's kind of almost the calm before the storm," she said.

Many wonder about Twomey and what would have been of the young man who had so much potential. "So early in the American dream --- a person's dying of a communicable disease," said Morlan.

Sources say a funeral service for Twomey is scheduled for Tuesday in Portland, Maine.
