    Tamil Nadu;

    Dengue deaths suspected

    STAFF REPORTER
    With the death of two infants following fever reported at Vendrayanpuram near here, the health department officials are carrying out fogging and larvicidal activity since Tuesday.

    Though a private hospital in Madurai has claimed that the death of a three-month-old male baby on August 12 was due to dengue, the Deputy Director (Health), V. Umamaheswari, said that it could not be confirmed.

    ?The baby was tested positive for dengue through the card test. However, this is not dependable and not accepted by the Government,? she said.

                  ...
                  It seems to be particularly scary in Salt Lake, which is reeling under an epidemic-like situation for the last three weeks. Thousands from the satellite township sought admission to hospitals in August, say sources. Even though no official figure has been released, TOI checked four private hospitals and found that more than 500 are being admitted with fever every day. Of them, around 50 test positive for dengue on an average.

                  Hospital authorities say dengue has never been so rampant in Salt Lake. And the patient-flow is rising sharply.

                  Apollo Hospital has tested 102 blood samples for dengue this month, of which 52 tested positive, said a source. On Friday, 70 were admitted with fever, out of whom 20 tested positive for dengue.

                  KOLKATA: Private clinics and hospitals in the city seem to be making the best out of the dengue panic.

                  With doctors fearing a dengue epidemic this year, private hospitals are charging varying rates for the NS-1 antigen test, which is being recommended to virtually every fever patient.

                  In Salt Lake, which seems to be facing its worst dengue outbreak, private clinics and hospitals are charging anything between Rs 700 and 1,800 for the NS-1 antigen tests. "Why do the rates vary so much? My son has been tested positive. While one private hospital charged Rs 600 for the NS-1 test, another asked for Rs 1,820," said a resident of BG block.

                  The state health department officials said the test is not necessary.

                            Hospital figures reveal that those diagnosed with the disease are not showing signs of quick recovery. While it takes around four days for the fever to subside and about a week for the weakness to ebb, hundreds are still down with fever and high platelet count more than 10-12 days after admission. Some experts claimed that dengue has been more virulent this time, with about 10% of the patients being critical.
