Guangxi boy confirmed with H7N9 virus after mother contracts bird flu

Health authorities in Guangxi province confirmed a boy had contracted the H7N9 strain of bird flu, a day after his mother was confirmed to have the virus.

The Guangxi health bureau said the boy, aged five and from Hengxian county, Nanning, started to show symptoms on Monday and was diagnosed with having the disease on Wednesday.

Health officials are still determining how the boy became infected but said he had been in close contact with his mother, 41.

She began to feel unwell late last month after visiting Zhongshan in Guangdong province. She returned to Nanning on January 28.

The boy remained in a stable condition but his mother?s condition was critical.

Xinhua reported the national health commission said there was no proof the H7N9 was spreading sustainably from person to person.

Nine other cases were reported in China on Wednesday ? four in Guangdong and Zhejiang respectively, and one in Fujian.

Guangdong reported four new bird flu cases: a 5-year-old girl and a 42-year-old man in Zhaoqing, a 49-year-old man in Foshan and a 56-year-old man in Shenzhen, said the provincial health and family planning commission.

The girl and the man from Foshan are in stable condition while the other two remain in critical condition, the commission said.

The eastern province of Zhejiang, the region hit hardest by the H7N9 virus, confirmed four new H7N9 cases on Wednesday, bringing the total number of affected cases to 69 in the province so far this year.

The patients were two men and two women, and all were in a critical condition on Wednesday.
