    The secretary for social affairs and culture, Chui Sai On, and the new regional director for the western pacific region of the World Health Organisation (WHO), Shin Young-Soo, met in Malaysia on Tuesday.


    According to the Health Bureau, both entities spoke about the present situation and contingency plans regarding public health scares that recently occurred. The SAR secretary presented reports about the work done in Macau concerning ?Healthy City,? the procedures adopted in the tainted milk products and influenza epidemic prevention.

    Macau's delegation, headed by Chui Sai On included the director of the Health Bureau Lei Chin Ion, sub-director, Chan Wai Sin, and the co-ordinator of the Centre for Disease Prevention and Control, Lam Chong.During the meeting the secretary thanked WHO for it support throughout the years and presented preliminary works and contingency measures to treat and prevent an influenza epidemic according to their instructions. Other delegation members also presented related activities about the ?healthy city? plan namely, tobacco smoking control, health promotion in schools, health building, community security and food safety.

    Also, Chui said that in 2008 the government had subsidised association project related to promotional activities on a ?Healthy City,? in order to increase public awareness as well as for the creation of a committee for the prevention and treatment of chronicle diseases.

    Besides, the delegation has also informed that the SAR government has worked the three phases to screen tainted milk with melamine, and highlighted the government's ?special? attention to preventive measures in case of an influenza epidemic. These include the creation of a team comprising public departments and headed by the secretary for social affairs and culture, as well a a storage place for anti-viral medication enough for over 30 percent of the population, and the reinforcement of seasonal vaccination campaigns and storage process for human bird flu vaccines.

    On the other hand, the director for the western-pacific region of the World Health Organisation (WHO), Shin Young-Soo, thanked the Macau delegation for the visit and praised all their accomplishments. He also highlighted that anti-viral medication storage to prevent an influenza epidemic was considered one of the main activities in the Western-Pacific countries and regions.

    In conclusion, doctor Shin Young-Soo also said he appreciated the SAR's support in promoting public health and said he hopped this relationship between Macau and WHO can continue as is.
