    INFLUENZA WEEKLY UPDATE
    2013/19: 5?12 May 2013

    The national influenza surveillance system in New Zealand is an essential public health component for assessing and implementing strategies to control influenza. This report summarises the data collected from sentinel general practice (GP) surveillance and non-sentinel surveillance for week 19 (5?12 May 2013).

    Summary
     ILI through sentinel surveillance was reported from 16 out of 20 District Health Boards (DHB) with a national consultation rate of 6.1 per 100 000 (21 ILI consultations).
     A total of 149 swabs were received from sentinel (17) and non-sentinel (132) surveillance.
     7 viruses were identified: B (not typed) (3), A(H3N2) (2), A/Perth/16/2009 (H3N2) (1), and A (not sub-typed) (1).

    INFLUENZA-LIKE ILLNESS SURVEILLANCE
    In the past week, a total of 21 consultations for influenza-like illness were reported from 62 general practices in 16 out of 20 DHBs. This gives a weekly consultation rate of 6.1 per 100 000 patient population. Figure 1 shows the weekly national consultation rates for 2011, 2012 seasons, and 2013 so far. The current rate of influenza-like illness is below the baseline.

    Summary
     ILI through sentinel surveillance was reported from 17 out of 20 District Health Boards
    (DHB) with a national consultation rate of 13.0 per 100 000 (45 ILI consultations).
     A total of 172 swabs were received from sentinel (17) and non-sentinel (155)
    surveillance.
     8 viruses were identified: B (lineage not determined) (6) and A (not subtyped) (2).

    INFLUENZA-LIKE ILLNESS SURVEILLANCE
    In the past week, a total of 45 consultations for influenza-like illness were reported from 62
    general practices in 17 out of 20 DHBs. This gives a weekly consultation rate of 13.0 per
    100 000 patient population. Figure 1 shows the weekly national consultation rates for 2011,
    2012 seasons, and 2013 so far. The current rate of influenza-like illness is below the baseline.

      Summary
       ILI through sentinel surveillance was reported from 17 out of 20 District Health Boards (DHB) with a national consultation rate of 11.7 per 100 000 (42 ILI consultations).
       A total of 155 swabs were received from sentinel (17) and non-sentinel (138) surveillance.
       Four influenza B viruses (lineage not determined) were identified.

      INFLUENZA-LIKE ILLNESS SURVEILLANCE
      In the past week, a total of 42 consultations for influenza-like illness were reported from 65 general practices in 17 out of 20 DHBs. This gives a weekly consultation rate of 11.7 per 100 000 patient population. Figure 1 shows the weekly national consultation rates for 2011, 2012 seasons, and 2013 so far. The current rate of influenza-like illness is below the baseline.

This report summarises the data collected from sentinel general practice (GP) surveillance and non-sentinel surveillance for week 22 (27 May?2 June 2013).

        Summary
         ILI through sentinel surveillance was reported from 17 out of 20 District Health Boards (DHB) with a national consultation rate of 11.3 per 100 000 (39 ILI consultations).
         A total of 173 swabs were received from sentinel (12) and non-sentinel (161) surveillance.
         14 influenza viruses were identified: influenza B (8) including three B/Wisconsin/1/2010-like viruses, A (not sub-typed) (3), A/California/7/2009 (H1N1)-like virus (2), and A/Victoria/361/2011 (H3N2)-like virus (1).

        INFLUENZA-LIKE ILLNESS SURVEILLANCE
        In the past week, a total of 39 consultations for influenza-like illness were reported from 65 general practices in 17 out of 20 DHBs. This gives a weekly consultation rate of 11.3 per 100 000 patient population. Figure 1 shows the weekly national consultation rates for 2011, 2012 seasons, and 2013 so far. The current rate of influenza-like illness is below the baseline.

           ILI through sentinel surveillance was reported from 18 out of 20 District Health Boards (DHB) with a national consultation rate of 14.8 per 100 000 (55 ILI consultations).
           A total of 202 swabs were received from sentinel (24) and non-sentinel (178) surveillance.
           15 influenza viruses were identified: B (lineage not determined) (12), A (not sub-typed) (2), and A(H1N1)pdm09 (1).

          INFLUENZA-LIKE ILLNESS SURVEILLANCE
          In the past week, a total of 55 consultations for influenza-like illness were reported from 68 general practices in 18 out of 20 DHBs. This gives a weekly consultation rate of 14.8 per 100 000 patient population. Figure 1 shows the weekly national consultation rates for 2011, 2012 seasons, and 2013 so far.             INFLUENZA-LIKE ILLNESS SURVEILLANCE
            In the past week, a total of 49 consultations for influenza-like illness were reported from 66 general practices in 18 out of 20 DHBs.
